Players grounded in their community

It is quite incredible that the European Cup/Champions League final has not been held in Lisbon, one of Europe’s major football cities, since 25 May 1967.  Lisbon is the home of one of the early giants of the tournament, and has had imposing cathedral-stadiums ever since, all but one of which was brought up to modern standards for Euro 2004.

When the Lisbon Lions return to the city of their greatest triumph, one day before its 47th anniversary, they will once more represent Celtic on the world stage, just as they did in the Lisbon sun all those years ago, and on hundreds of occasions since, when they have pitched up at supporter or media events.

This is a team of The Ages.  The games’ dignitaries will pay homage to them next month, while locals of an older generation will recall their youth with a glint in their eyes.  Delighted their going back, hope they bring their boots.

We’re in for a treat in the run up to this year’s final.

Well done to the Celtic fans who rallied round to buy Johnny Doyle’s 1977 Cup Final shirt for his family.  Stunning work.

Is it unacceptable to say ‘Hearts are going bust’?  The only disputable element of this claim is its transient nature; Hearts are already bust.  I think it’s commendable that a Celtic player mixes socially and culturally with Hibs fans, who he previously performed for.  Remember and acknowledge those who helped you on the way up.

As far as I’m concerned our board are doing some job at chasing punters away from Celtic Park. As someone said earlier, we would never be the punch bag under Kelly, Stein or McCann. And to think of Green and McCoist freely mouthing off at clubs and SFA alike, goading them into a battle. Makes me sick.

Tom Boyd and to a lesser extent Sutton and Hartson have been the only Celtic men brave enough to call it. Too many have taken the soup.

I hope Lawwell has a long term agenda here, possibly knowing that Cheating Club are goosed for the foreseeable future and absolutely no threat whatsoever.

If not, we’re being dragged up the back of the bus again.

Cracking player for Everton but just not the same with Utd.

  8. Here is the Celtic statement, read the last line, it’s the telling one for me…..

THE SFA today served a notice of complaint on Leigh Griffiths, alleging a breach of disciplinary rule 86 – not acting in the best interests of Association Football by singing in public about Heart of Midlothian FC in administration.

Following the incident, the player publicly apologised for his actions. Celtic have fined the player and the Club has also apologised to Hearts, an apology which they have accepted.

Therefore, the Club feels there is no need for any further action, and this is something which we will defend.

No need for further action, and this is something which we will defend.

I read that as a back off SFA shot across the bows of the SFA.

Preemptive action in house by the club to stave of, what would be, punitive action from the SFA.

Fairly predictable in Camp Nou. Barca on top after first 10 and Athletico kicking lumps out of them.Just the 3 yellows so far. Pity ‘cos they can play a bit and have had a few chances. If Barca keep a clean sheet I fancy them in the second leg.

Similar for Man U, but less agricultural challenges. Bayern on top but no finish yet. Dawyne Dibley (lol SOAL) should have scored, but it’s all about taking them at this level.

  15. I wonder how much the fine was? I’m thinking it’ll have been nominal. Probably a box of jam tarts for the tea room.
