Players grounded in their community

963

It is quite incredible that the European Cup/Champions League final has not been held in Lisbon, one of Europe’s major football cities, since 25 May 1967.  Lisbon is the home of one of the early giants of the tournament, and has had imposing cathedral-stadiums ever since, all but one of which was brought up to modern standards for Euro 2004.

When the Lisbon Lions return to the city of their greatest triumph, one day before its 47th anniversary, they will once more represent Celtic on the world stage, just as they did in the Lisbon sun all those years ago, and on hundreds of occasions since, when they have pitched up at supporter or media events.

This is a team of The Ages.  The games’ dignitaries will pay homage to them next month, while locals of an older generation will recall their youth with a glint in their eyes.  Delighted their going back, hope they bring their boots.

We’re in for a treat in the run up to this year’s final.

Well done to the Celtic fans who rallied round to buy Johnny Doyle’s 1977 Cup Final shirt for his family.  Stunning work.

Is it unacceptable to say ‘Hearts are going bust’?  The only disputable element of this claim is its transient nature; Hearts are already bust.  I think it’s commendable that a Celtic player mixes socially and culturally with Hibs fans, who he previously performed for.  Remember and acknowledge those who helped you on the way up.

Fair play to Hearts. They are not attempting to make anything out of this.

In fact, it is pretty obvious they think the situation is a ludicrous as we do.

Very strange that the SFA now seem to be claiming jurisdiction in a public house? More interesting to see what Celtic do, regarding defence of an employee, or will Leigh be expected to appoint his own brief.

    Interesting point.

Mind you it seems not so long ago that Celtic were claiming jurisdiction over funerals and such like in Ireland.

  4. Gascoigne conducts a mock flute band at Ibrox at a Rangers-Celtic match.

SFA response? Nothing to see, move along.

Then along comes Leigh Griffiths and all hell let’s loose for singing with his mates in a pub. Absolutely ridiculous as is the Celtic decision to fine him.

  5. Lennybhoy,

If we have any influence whatsoever at the SFA (joke??), the first question we should demand a transparent answer to: why has McCoist not been charged with bringing the game into disrepute for demanding and putting into serious jeopardy the names, which he already knew? He should have been jailed for that, sleekit little nyaff that he is, for endangering life.

I think Celtic have high standards to maintain and set a good example for the rest.

BTW I don’t think LG did anything shocking or wrong, and I’d guess neither do the club….

I’m sorry but after all that our manager, our players and our supporters have had to endure at the hands of their supporters for decades I see know justifiable reason why we should be making any sort of apology and certainly for nothing so trivial (and true).

To deal with the possibility of ridiculous decisions like this. Which are always a possibility for Celtic in the environment we operate in.

I have no time for Hearts either. But that statement on the radio which someone posted above, Gary Locke’s comments when asked about the incident, and the fact that Hearts have not gone down the Sevco victim route does at least deserve some respect.

I agree there is a lack of consistency as to what Celtic deem comment worthy, and not.

However, we’d already dealt with the LG matter privately and would probably never have heard anything, but for the complaint via MSM.

With regard to Aberdeen hooliganism, we can only assume Celtic were compensated, dealt with it privately, and were quick to say what a great relationship the clubs have despite, the appalling behaviour of Aberdeen’s fans, the singing of offensive songs included.

  14. Hamiltontim is praying for Oscar on

    A wee poser.

Should Celtic have fined Peter Lawell for his jibe about Deidco and should the SFA have cited him in the aftermath of it?

    This absolutely stinks.

I know it will leave me open to accusations of narrow mindedness but I have nothing but contempt for that club and it’s supporters. Consequently in my humble opinion we were wrong to apologise.

The posters on here that indulge in political debate are probably certain of which side they will vote for come the Independance vote. The people who may be influenced however are the lurkers as there are up to 25% of those eligible to vote who, according to the polls, are undecided.

Whether people like it or not this is the biggest most important vote that this country will probably ever have and as a result in between discussing the Speculative Society in Edinburgh along with the various nuances of particular brands of Stornaway Black pudding or the merits of our teaching profession it is innevitable that some people will want to aire their veiws on certain matters pertaining to the forthcomming vote.

On a personal level I have shifted from No over to Yes and recently was undecided as I have issues with how this small country deals with certain issues.

The Rangers story and the power and influence David Murray weilded in Scottish society and his control of a section of our press gave me many worries about whether we could handle Independance. My worries stemmed from concerns that someone similar to Murray could end up in a position of power in goverment and have the same control of the media, meaning we would be kept in the dark about what was potentially going on.

The internet and blogs such as this have made me reavaluate my concerns and I’m now happy to put my trust in a vote for Independance as I believe the financial case for being Independant has been won by the Yes group.

I am not happy at retaining the £ and would prefer our own currency but I understand the reasons for staying with sterling to begin with.

As I understand things we will have the opportunity to vote on a constitution if we become Independant. This will allow everyone to participate in making this country fundamentally different in it’s outlook than the Union we are currently part of. I don’t know what the future holds for Scotland but I could make a good guess at what working class people have to look forward to if we remain part of the Union.

Gotta love the Wee Man. I’d forgotten about this wee gem from an interview at the weekend, until reading about the Barca game tonight.

When he was asked about how difficult it was for Neymar to live continuously under the weigfht of so much expectation at Barca / Brasil. The Wee Man’s response:-

Every player has ups and downs. I would say to him to leave his problems behind when he steps on the pitch. With Messi, he’s playing alongside one of the world’s best players and should learn from that. Of course, I was the Messi of my day and everybody learned from me

Wonder if his ex-team mates are as modest too?

I’m sure the club despises that mob just as much as we do – especially after Neil’s abhorrent treatment there but I think Celtic are acting swiftly to quell a non-event.

Clearly they are saying to everyone we’ll deal with it ( what little it is).
