Players grounded in their community

963

It is quite incredible that the European Cup/Champions League final has not been held in Lisbon, one of Europe’s major football cities, since 25 May 1967.  Lisbon is the home of one of the early giants of the tournament, and has had imposing cathedral-stadiums ever since, all but one of which was brought up to modern standards for Euro 2004.

When the Lisbon Lions return to the city of their greatest triumph, one day before its 47th anniversary, they will once more represent Celtic on the world stage, just as they did in the Lisbon sun all those years ago, and on hundreds of occasions since, when they have pitched up at supporter or media events.

This is a team of The Ages.  The games’ dignitaries will pay homage to them next month, while locals of an older generation will recall their youth with a glint in their eyes.  Delighted their going back, hope they bring their boots.

We’re in for a treat in the run up to this year’s final.

Well done to the Celtic fans who rallied round to buy Johnny Doyle’s 1977 Cup Final shirt for his family.  Stunning work.

Is it unacceptable to say ‘Hearts are going bust’?  The only disputable element of this claim is its transient nature; Hearts are already bust.  I think it’s commendable that a Celtic player mixes socially and culturally with Hibs fans, who he previously performed for.  Remember and acknowledge those who helped you on the way up.

    The vote –

    For what its worth .

I pay tax on a house I own in Edinburgh but I dont have a vote . The house will be sold in June.

If had the vote I would vote No — Independence from what? ——-wee Betty Windsor, ? thae English basturts ? Any monetary union will mean a banking union which will mean a fiscal union…

Out of interest I keep a record re how people I have contact with will vote —

    current state of play————

    NO = 27

    Yes = 7.

Looking forward to the rest of the remaining games this season. It will be interesting to see who Lenny gives an extended break, and who of the youngsters is going to find himself being told to kit up.

Will be booking a trip home end of September, and hope that I can shake a few hands finally of a few esteemed contributors on these fine pages.

While home, I’ll be voting Yes. Like SFTB I understand that there are unseen forces that make the vote either way irrelevant. However, I am not voting yes as I have any regard for Salmond, or his ilk. I see this as a chance to free ourselves somewhat from the likes of the Tory spivs, whose leader is a relative of queen Lizzie. Surely any Scotsman in Edinburgh would have more regard for my elderly parents, than an Englishman who’s interest never crosses the M25? My Irish family in Cavan agree with me on this.

I was at that game, on entering the game I did not go through a Turnstile. The Police opened the large gate that is normally opened at the end of the game; this allowed everybody. You would have thought they would have learned…

Sadly they did not and 96 Souls lost their lives at Hillsborough.

We were like Sardines that night, we we all started chanting, we are overcrowded…there but for the grace of God.

I recall Celtic asking Supporters that were at the game to send in their Tickets to show no counterfoil had been taken. A green ticket with a diagonal red stripe through it if memories serves me correctly.

Hearts boss Gary Locke was questioned about the video on Tuesday morning and said: “I haven’t seen it. Obviously you read about it and according to reports I’ve heard he is not a very good singer.”

    Says it all.

  5. Just in to say….

Leigh Griffiths will, imho, score goals for us on a

cannonball kid type of ratio – if he gets the chances ?

But, away from all of that, when LG scored his goal at

Tynecastle and, ran towards the Hearts fans – Neil should

have managed the situation and let the Celtic fans and of

course the rest of LG’s team mates know that, if you score

for Celtic – you can’t run to the fans, especially the away fans.

Neil should have grabbed the opportunity and said – “Celtic

players should be aware that, when they score they can’t

run to the fans or they get booked!” – an open goal missed by

the, at times….some what ‘lax’ Celtic dug-out. imho.

A wee bit of MO’Nism wouldn’t have gone amiss there Neil. imho

Memories are made of this. I had a we look in here

    http://cairney2.wordpress.com/2014/02/12/285/

for a bit of nostalgia. It is the History of Scottish Football by Jim Craig.

It is the decade when I suspect a few CQNers first started watching football. My dad had taken me to Celtic as a wean but 1958 was when I first really got interested in going to games with my pals.

One was a Clyde supporter and I remember going to the Scottish Cup final Clyde v Hibs. Johnny Coyle scored the only goal of the game but I remember Joe Baker punching in a cross that was rightly ruled out. Clyde had some useful players in those days.

The period 1958 to 65 was a bleak one for Celtic and that will probably come out in the decade on the sixties. No league titles and cup final or semi final defeats to Rangers, St Mirren and Dunfermline, misery until Big Billy ended it all in 65.

Anyway a site worth paying a visit to as it moves into decades that we were part of.

Very strange that the SFA now seem to be claiming jurisdiction in a public house? More interesting to see what Celtic do, regarding defence of an employee, or will Leigh be expected to appoint his own brief.

    ….?………………………………..

Although I’ve been opposed to using Sammi as opposed to players who will be with us next season, it might be an idea for Neil to send all of the players who have been playing regularly with us, especially Izzy who will be at the World Cup, and field those players who have not had a lot of game time Balde, Pukki, Griffiths, Zaluska and the youngsters along with Sammi. This would give Sammi a chance for a fitting farewell and help him to maintain match fitness for the World Cup as a thank you for his service to us.

Can anyone point me to where LG broke any of these.

Did The SFA act after a complaint by someone ?(no laughing at the back)

Or is it just that they are so blatantly anti celtic that someone took it upon themselves to issue this nonsense to LG.

I wonder if someone complained about Gary Lockes language and actions after the Hearts 2nd Goal what they would do.

Leigh Griffiths being up before the beaks for singing in a pub us one of the most ludicrous things I’ve ever heard.

Now’s the time for Celtic to show a bit of steel and tell this lot to GTF and do so as publicly as the SFA have done to us.

  11. Re: Leigh Griffiths singing in a pub with his mates…

The SFA is citing rule 86, which relates to “not acting in the best interests of Association Football”.

By definition, judging from what we’ve all witnessed in the last two years, the SFA itself contrevenes rule 86.

Agree absolutely. In not telling Lenny how to do his job, but wouldn’t this be a perfect opportunity to field a team essentially of the “reserves” and the U20’s? Just ask the fans to be understanding, as results might not all go our way, but assure them they’ll see new talent every game.

THE SFA today served a notice of complaint on Leigh Griffiths, alleging a breach of disciplinary rule 86 – not acting in the best interests of Association Football by singing in public about Heart of Midlothian FC in administration.

Following the incident, the player publicly apologised for his actions. Celtic have fined the player and the Club has also apologised to Hearts, an apology which they have accepted.

Therefore, the Club feels there is no need for any further action, and this is something which we will defend.
