Players grounded in their community

It is quite incredible that the European Cup/Champions League final has not been held in Lisbon, one of Europe’s major football cities, since 25 May 1967.  Lisbon is the home of one of the early giants of the tournament, and has had imposing cathedral-stadiums ever since, all but one of which was brought up to modern standards for Euro 2004.

When the Lisbon Lions return to the city of their greatest triumph, one day before its 47th anniversary, they will once more represent Celtic on the world stage, just as they did in the Lisbon sun all those years ago, and on hundreds of occasions since, when they have pitched up at supporter or media events.

This is a team of The Ages.  The games’ dignitaries will pay homage to them next month, while locals of an older generation will recall their youth with a glint in their eyes.  Delighted their going back, hope they bring their boots.

We’re in for a treat in the run up to this year’s final.

Well done to the Celtic fans who rallied round to buy Johnny Doyle’s 1977 Cup Final shirt for his family.  Stunning work.

Is it unacceptable to say ‘Hearts are going bust’?  The only disputable element of this claim is its transient nature; Hearts are already bust.  I think it’s commendable that a Celtic player mixes socially and culturally with Hibs fans, who he previously performed for.  Remember and acknowledge those who helped you on the way up.

  1. Not as bothered about so called Independence as quite a few people seem to be but for what it is worth, the people in positions of power who are advocating that we vote No are not a bunch in whom I have much faith. Indeed, historically, I have found them truly untrustworthy people. Of course, some of those advocating Yes are not my cup of tea either but the No`s have it in spades in terms of their oily characteristics.

PS Remember I am talking of `those in positions of power` and not everyone who has decided to vote Yes.

OK ghuys, I’ll give up my one man protest against the constant politicking on here. Although, I’m saying No just now, I’m at the wind-up. Come July, i’ll start to bone up on the issues and what each side has to say and then I’ll take account of my own circumstances and my family’s and vote accordingly.

I hope not to discuss any politics before then on here. It makes me want to stick needles in my eyeballs. Hope no one took offence.

I also have that `sneaky feeling` and am considering doubling it with Athletico + 1 against Barca.

    Welcome to Celtic, Leigh!

  8. Previous posters have mentioned their visit to Nottingham in the European Cup and of their recollection of the situation on the terracing. I was fortunate in terms of the crush to be on the other side of the ground, but it was clear to us even from that distance that something serious was going on and that our supporters were in a dangerous place

Two things annoyed me that night. Perhaps few saw Brian Clough’s attempt to blame our lads for a pitch invasion. My recollection is that he picked up a green towel and threw it in the direction of the Celtic dug out implying that they should going and sort out their supporters. Little did he know of the possible disaster that could have taken place.

Secondly I do not I think the press did us any favours either in the after match reporting.

Unlike others I do not remember being stopped by the police or stewards. But then I was with lhads from the Port who had that don’t mix it with me look about them.

However I do remember that the road across from Scotch corner was fog bound and our bus nearly ran into the one in front of us. A tough night all round.

Not one single person in the independence debate has been able to give me a sufficient answer to one simple question.

Other than independence, what do other countries have that Scotland doesn’t have?

    That’s why I’m voting yes.

At the moment, Dundee United are 2/1 to win the Cup; Sevco are 100/30. That would suggest United are strongish favourites to KO the New Huns…..or am I extrapolating incorrectly?

  23. Nothing that has happened with sevco up until now will convince me that their name is not on the cup, when did fairness or credibility ever matter to them in their former or present guise. Its a fix and most can see it, the conflict of interest with refs who support them but kept under wraps could only happen here, and sadly accepted by the clubs who make up the SPFL/SFA

Remember that 2/1 is to win the Cup ; NOT simply to beat the Huns.
