Postecoglou and his players magnificent performance

236

If Allan McGregor lives to be 100, I expect at that grand age, when he shuts his eyes, his mind will imagine the spectre of Reo Hatate hovering around the edge of the penalty area, preparing to shoot.  7 minutes in, the goalkeeper spilled Reo’s shot into the path of Tom Rogic, and Ibrox was shaken to its core.

Newco started well, forcing Celtic into nervous looking errors.  Josip Juranovic left space behind him that was exploited by Ryan Kent, who cutback for Alan Ramsay to score in the second minute.  The home side pressed high in the minutes that followed as Celtic struggled to break out of their defensive third.

When Hatate was given a second chance to find Daizan Maeda on the left, the break was on.  Callum McGregor drove deep into Newco territory, riding challenges from four opponents before releasing the ball into the heart of the box.  Rogic, then Hatate shot, before Rogic calmly turned the ball home.

Celtic settled into a pattern of defending and creating chances, they did both effectively.  Three minutes from the break, the Newco defence failed to deal with a free kick into the box.  The ball broke to Cameron Carter-Vickers who shot home from close range.

For me, the second half was never comfortable, I wanted Celtic to move further up-field, but they were content to protect their lead and break on the counter.  It was the perfect position for a team in the league driving seat to be.  In taking the lead so early, Newco had a genuine chance of winning the game and putting the title race on a knife edge.  In truth, they were just not good enough.

Substitute Liel Abada had the best two chances of the half, one forcing an excellent save from McGregor.  Joe Hart had one save of note in the entire match, he mostly collected trundling low percentage attempts.

The players all looked tired towards the end.  Giorgos Giakoumakis, in particular, ran himself into the ground.  After all our speculation on who would start alongside Callum McGregor in midfield, Rogic and Hatate were clearly the right choice.  Tom could have had a hattrick but did enough to see through what should be another title.

Nothing today on the thrown glass and bottles, the bizarre “Old Firm” branding or the long-term consequences of yesterday’s result, we’ll pick this up during the week.  Today is about Ange Postecoglou and his players magnificent performance and game management.

Just for the record could you point me towards where Celtic FC/Celtic PLC stated that “we are one half of nothing”. I know Paul67 has said something to that effect in the past, but is there anything official which I could refer to? Genuine question.

  2. Happened to be out in the car and SSB was on. Near the end. There was a caller who asked why Rangers weren’t able to follow the same model as Celtic by bringing in players for low fees and selling them on at huge profits. Been doing it for 10 years or more he said.

Andy Halliday mentioned 16million for Patterson that hadn’t yet been used and should allow wee Gio to buy in the summer.

My thought was that the caller just had his question answered. It is all hidden in plain sight.

16million. Says who? Where’s the proof of that? I suspect it may be 16m COST to Everton including wages for 5 years and based on add-ons that don’t seem likely right now.

You see caller, the reason why Rangers cannot emulate Celtic is they can’t or won’t publish the truth. Bids for Morelos of . Which makes the player demand to be paid based on that valuation. Which prices him out of the market as he is being paid too much AND Rangers want to be paid over the top transfer fee.

They pay too much when they buy. Pay players too much in wages. Get the lapdogs to inflate both their capability and their transfer fee.

Result = NO SALE. Which is then sold to the Orcs as being a good thing by holding on to their best players.

Oh, and probably the snarl that players gain when joining them doesn’t help when players are being assessed for suitability in fitting in with buying clubs ethos.

  3. Think Maeda is a nailed on signing,

Normally players are taken on loan with an option to buy, so if it doesn’t work out the Club just don’t take up the option to buy.

There was very strange wording on Maeda deal, it says Maeda goes to Celtic on a 6 month Loan but Celtic have a Compulsory purchase agreement.

So Celtic HAVE to buy him whether they want to or not.

  4. Bids for Morelos of (insert stupid number) … except I had angled brackets which got swallowed up by the HTML interpreter.

  5. English is a sensationalist apologist for a bandwagon jumping tabloidesque scribbler.

His piece on rangers having 2 teams who could beat Celtic earlier this season was a disgrace.

  6. Superbru Update:-

Forgive the late hour but other issues were preoccupying my thoughts.

We had 3 joint yellow caps as winners with 12.5 points yesterday, Friesdorfer, Ayrshire Tim and St. Tam’s. Of those taking part, only Mick the Tim managed a complete blank with 0 points as his optimism only went as far as a draw yesterday, earning him the wooden spoon. 43 of us predicted a Celtic win and 16 got the exact score. Over 20 will be cursing Abada or the Ibrox goalie for not giving them their 3:1 prediction.

Overall, Call me Gerry is more than 10 points clear and is first to get over 200 points this season. Hopeful Hoops remains in 2nd and Big Archie is 9 points further behind in 3rd. They will need to gamble on some surprise results when the Top and bottom 6 split and crucial matches are being played. At the foot of our table Wee BGFC, despite a good week with 11.5 points and 4th place, is holding off Chalmersbhoy and Wee MCCaff for the overall wooden spoon.

Next set of predictions are due by Saturday 9th April at 3 pm

English – like heaps of Scottish media pundits and scribblers – knows what side his bread is buttered on. It’s a requirement of the job to condemn Celtic and to gloss over anything untoward happening down Govan way. Can understand a born bun doing it but the Bonnars, Keevinses and Walkers at it make my stomach churn.

That said, in isolation, the TE piece cited was pretty balanced.

The equivalent post-match piece by Mr Leckie managed to condemn them AND act as a rallying cry for club unity.

    Enjoyable “read back” day.

I’ll leave you with this thought.

Depending on how Saturday results go, a win on Sunday for 10th place St Mirren against 10th anniversary Sevco …

… could see the Buddies claiming the final top six place.

  10. There are two versions of Rangers right now. There’s the Rangers in Europe, where they go up against, and beat, teams that they’re not really expected to beat. This season, in the Europa League, they’re revelling wonderfully in their guise of scalp-taking underdogs.

Then there’s the domestic Rangers who exist in a pressure cooker. Expectation is on them like a deadweight on their shoulder – and they haven’t coped that well. Celtic, recast dramatically under Ange Postecoglou, have asked questions and Rangers have found no answers

For me, Tom English is being a bit cliche here without offering anything substantive to explain their differing results at home and in Europe. He lazily refers to pressure but it’s much more than that – they’ve collapsed three seasons from four now.

I think in large part not due to pressure but due to the fact that in the second half of the season, opponents need the points more and tend to sit in and defend, they struggle with this in a big way and will do so even more now that Morelos is out.

They’re a workmanlike side that struggle to score at the business end of the season.

    SUPERSUTTON.

There is no way that Everton paid £16M for Patterson. He hasn’t started a game yet!

Halliday is delusional. We will find out the real fee when Everton publish their accounts.

I think the reason for the old firm signage at Ibrox may have something to do with the upcoming legal action coming from the promoters of the Sydney super cup.

  13. CELTIC MAC – March 9th last year the official Celtic FC Twitter account put out a very simple statement:

“We’re not half of anything . . . Not our problem.

    One club since 1888”.

This was in reference to the media constantly using Old Firm when reporting on violence, city centre wrecking escapades etc

Off to the Algarve for a week tomorrow with a group of great Tims. Its been a while since we did anything like it so I’m looking forward to it immensely. Plan on catching Saturdays game in a pub or at worst hesgoal in the villa. Probably end up with huns on the flight, that could be interesting!!.

Just back from Tollcross after a swim, the traffic in Glasgow is definitely getting busier every week took almost half an hour to get back to the southside.

Still on a high from the weekend, its a great way to kick start the holiday week. I wonder what the topic of conversation will be in the airport :-)

I thought when they entered the liquidation process, Celtic bought exclusive patent on the OF label. I may be wrong however if not have we altered that label?

  18. How quickly their conduct is confined to the dustbin of history. That article by Andrew Smith in the Scotsman last year should have served as a wake up call to Scotland’s powers that be. Instead, they have conveniently forgotten or, more likely, are too frightened to face down Scotland’s shame.

Pretty sure we co-own it with them, hence the Sevco fans bringing it up when we say ‘ no old firm’. They must have inherited their IP rights from Rangers when they bought the assets

    PPG – 1.9

Points per game is the only outcome that really matters in a league race.

    Difference is staggering.

Since Christmas we’ve won 50% more points than them.

  28. Sturgeon’s condemnation. What she actually said.

    Draw your own conclusions.

    #####################

“People throwing glass bottles is is just not acceptable, it’s mindless, thuggish behaviour and it has no place in any civilised society.

“These are matters for the authorities, obviously, the football authorities and potentially for the police and the criminal justice authorities.

“People should be able to enjoy football.

“Football should be something that people can take their kids to and have a happy joyful occasion and behaviour like that, whether it’s at an Old Firm match or any other football match besmirches that and it should absolutely be seen as unacceptable.”

  29. !!Bada Bing!! on

The Celtic manager was asked if Kyogo would be fit to play on Saturday against St Johnstone? “Yes he’ll be fine,” Ange replied. “He was desperate to play today but when I look at our run-in we’ve got some massive games. He’s such an important player for us and I thought today we could handle it without him.

“To be fair he tried everything. Everywhere I turned he popped up in front of me to make sure I knew he was ready to go. I couldn’t walk around Lennoxtown without seeing him. But we’ll keep him on ice. He’s ready to go, he’ll be fine and he’ll be involved next week.”

  30. Tim Malone Will Tell on

    Bada – agree 100%.

In addition to the obvious safety implications, it also allows Celtic to distance ourselves wrt culpability for the events at Ibrox.

  31. I thought the e-tims article was a bit all over the place.

Relatively benign stuff gets thrown on pitches from time to time. Some of our fans threw what looked like an energy drink and some cardboard Coke cups when we last played Hearts at home.

A lot of the stuff thrown at the end of the game on Sunday was similarly benign and dodged by our players.

The coins thrown at Jota were another level up and to be fair, Walker and McCoist highlighted it on the TV.

The glass bottles are the outlier and should provoke action.

Security used to be decent at Ibrox when it was Rock Steady. I believe that the current organisation is actually an in-house Ibrox operation and they advertised for unpaid fans to join up

Not a good set up at all.

There used to be bottles flying between fans back in the 80s but I remember being at a Celtic v Dundee match (big away support then) and the fact that we were more crushed in meant that the bottle never smashed; kept going back and forth. I’d say the first time it was thrown injured someone. Rapid game is obviously another example.

I thought we had consigned this kind of thing to history. I have brought a bag to CP a few times in recent years and i have been searched every time at the turnstile

One of the guys in my section did bring a half bottle of single malt in once though. He bought 3 Cokes, went to the toilets and tipped some out, split out the whisky between them, binned the bottle and brought the Cokes to our section.

It was obviously easy to bring it in within a jacket pocket. Easy to get it in but good security should spot folks drinking from these bottles. He knew he had to be sneaky at CP but all those bottles at Ibrox must have been on display. Shocking stewarding
