Postecoglou and his players magnificent performance

236

If Allan McGregor lives to be 100, I expect at that grand age, when he shuts his eyes, his mind will imagine the spectre of Reo Hatate hovering around the edge of the penalty area, preparing to shoot.  7 minutes in, the goalkeeper spilled Reo’s shot into the path of Tom Rogic, and Ibrox was shaken to its core.

Newco started well, forcing Celtic into nervous looking errors.  Josip Juranovic left space behind him that was exploited by Ryan Kent, who cutback for Alan Ramsay to score in the second minute.  The home side pressed high in the minutes that followed as Celtic struggled to break out of their defensive third.

When Hatate was given a second chance to find Daizan Maeda on the left, the break was on.  Callum McGregor drove deep into Newco territory, riding challenges from four opponents before releasing the ball into the heart of the box.  Rogic, then Hatate shot, before Rogic calmly turned the ball home.

Celtic settled into a pattern of defending and creating chances, they did both effectively.  Three minutes from the break, the Newco defence failed to deal with a free kick into the box.  The ball broke to Cameron Carter-Vickers who shot home from close range.

For me, the second half was never comfortable, I wanted Celtic to move further up-field, but they were content to protect their lead and break on the counter.  It was the perfect position for a team in the league driving seat to be.  In taking the lead so early, Newco had a genuine chance of winning the game and putting the title race on a knife edge.  In truth, they were just not good enough.

Substitute Liel Abada had the best two chances of the half, one forcing an excellent save from McGregor.  Joe Hart had one save of note in the entire match, he mostly collected trundling low percentage attempts.

The players all looked tired towards the end.  Giorgos Giakoumakis, in particular, ran himself into the ground.  After all our speculation on who would start alongside Callum McGregor in midfield, Rogic and Hatate were clearly the right choice.  Tom could have had a hattrick but did enough to see through what should be another title.

Nothing today on the thrown glass and bottles, the bizarre “Old Firm” branding or the long-term consequences of yesterday’s result, we’ll pick this up during the week.  Today is about Ange Postecoglou and his players magnificent performance and game management.

Something I forgot to mention; Ramsay made zero effort to track McGregor at our equaliser. Having a luxury player doesn’t always work. Basically came out with a null impact by scoring one and inviting the equaliser.

There is a video from a sevconian on twitter showing McGregor drifting past Ramsey for that goal. For a guy being paid obscene amounts of cash it can only be described as pathetic. He just didn’t look bothered. Either that or his fitness levels are appalling or he us protecting himself for international duty.

I’m all for Ramseys behaviour as it is an absolute slap in the face to his temporary employers and their followers.

If he was playing for us I would want him chased. Apart from the laziness his use of the ball was abysmal.

I wanted him and Jack(ass) to play so they ha no excuses against us. I hope both are ‘fit’ for hampden as I’d like to batter them again there.

To be fair, kudos to the big bear who was alert to the would be pitch invader – certainly did the invisible stewards and the players a big favour.

  3. Very much enjoyed Tony Ralston clattering the plastic Gangsta, Mr Kent.

    Premeditated and perfectly executed.

That said, a challenge not to be repeated next time because a red card us a certainty and was a possibility yesterday.

Hopefully Kyogo has some game time in the legs for Easter Sunday. 60 minutes of either him or Giorgios running them into the ground and 30 minutes of the other way round will be giving the orc defence sleepless nights.

Feeling tip top today I must say……

  4. Repeating what i said after the last derby victory and why not.

It’s a great day for singin’ a song

And it’s a great day for movin’ along.

To quote Al Pacino from his great oscar winning movie.

On Talksport this morning they thought this was a cracking game of football, great for the neutral and indeed it was but tenderhooks for me until I heard that final whistle blow and we went six points clear at the top of the Championship table.

When Ryan Kent left Juro for dead and sent an inch perfect cross for Ramsay the new Sevco messiah to first time it to the back of the Celtic net in the opening minute, it seemed all hell broke loose as the Ibrox hordes were ready for the slaughter. Celtic were all over the shop in those opening minutes. But SuperMac was having none of it and surged into the Rangers’ box sweeping aside defenders like falling leaves for Rog to equalise and all of a sudden from then on thhe wall of sound dipped and they became the rattled, nervy, team for the reamainder of the half with Celtic eventually taking the lead.

Celtic were deserving winners and created all the chances with McGregor and well done. keeping them in it. A great shift put in by all the Celtic players

Went to see Tommy Tiernan last night – seems to be a Liverpool fan but clearly enjoyed yesterday afternoon and had a wee joke about the Papal flag being flown among the 700.

Looked to me like Ramsey was huffing and puffing after 10 mins.

Didn’t see him much after the goal whatsoever…

  7. Ps have a fiver on us winning the treble…here’s hoping……20-1

2 bets on us winning the league, first at 2-1 and then at 13-8 both being offered as cash in close to value of full winnings.

These were placed when so much bickering and negativety was going on regarding Ange and our team…..put you money where your mouth is….😁🍀

  8. The guy who stopped the zombie getting on the park mostly did the zombie a favour. I’m not sure big CCV would have been too intimidated by a fat middle aged half wit confronting him.

However, questions need asked and answered about the safety of our staff and players at that cess pit. Our former captain had to fend off a ‘pitch invader’ who attempted to assault him not too many years ago. The security appears not to be functioning.

The longest odds we were was 11/4 I think. Unfortunately the bookies were a bit more realistic about our prospects

Still a way to go, of course.

Fantastic performance and we will only get better under Ange.

  11. The importance of winning this season’s title will kick-in during the summer. The luxury (hopefully) of a proper break without setting that alarm early for the CL Qualifiers. Can’t remember the last time we were actually primed for the CL Qualifiers, so to eliminate those summer hurdles, lovely.

Also, the Japanese guys will get an overdue break, with the banked experience of knowing what is expected when you play for Celtic. Calmac, Taylor, and maybe Turnbull, will have the Scotland WC qualifiers to negotiate.

Ange and the board will have time to plan for next season, and a strange season it will be with a November/December World Cup putting the breaks on the usual domestic and European calendar. Lot’s of players will leave and I’m certainly hoping the The Fridge and Jota will extend their stay. A couple of other oven readies, of proven quality would also be most welcome. No more projects for the time being please.

And MAD MITCH’s stadium redevelopment plans will be accepted by DD, who will fund the entire project.

  12. Amid all the great celebrations yesterday it is good to see our progress is knowledge based and grounded in our own progress as shown in this informative exchange with 2 good Celts.a wee correction of hun narrative. Thanks Celts

Due largely to newco’s excellent Europa League performances these past 3 years, I think I read SPFL winners can also go straight into CL next season too.

    ——————————————-

Please don’t take this as a personal criticism Deniabhoy, but you and many others have been taken in by the bottle throwers and their fans in the media on this one.

Scotland’s current position in the coefficient table is predominantly due to Celtic’s efforts over the 5 seasons from 16-17 until 20-21. In this period, we generated 59 points to their 49.5 out of the total of 133.5 points.

It’s only in the 22-23 qualification that their 65 points (to our 58) exceeds our own.

Apologies for such a tedious post amid the general* exuberance from our terrific win today, but once these myths take hold they become accepted truth

  13. There is one area that Ange needs to work on with the team, especially if we are heading for the CL group stages.

If we are going to keep playing it out from the back, then we must be faster in thought and execution. It works for Man City because they have world class players, everyone is now adopting this method but with players who do not look comfortable with it.

The following scenario has happened so many times. Hart has ball. Hart passes to a static defender. They look up, see they are being closed down and pass it back to Hart who also has someone bearing down on him. Hart scrambles to get rid of it and achieves it by the skin of his teeth.

Disaster averted. Until next time . . . CL teams will have this worked out before every game.

Solution? Maybe the defender receiving the ball has to already be in motion, running forward with the objection to pass through the lines quickly.

The occasional boot up the park is not to be sniffed at either, keeps the opposition guessing as to how many players they can leave up the park.

  14. I thought Rogic´s measured reaction after he scored was key actually. Some years ago we went ahead in a derby at Parkhead through Gary Hooper, with a spectacular goal celebration afterwards. But we ended up losing.

Can we not get this fawning in front of the camera banned as well for goal celebrations? For me Celtic are not the worst culprits but there are players in all the teams singling out their camera and it is all horseshit. Players need to be told they are there for the paying spectators and we should outlaw this pantomime.

In case you haven’t seen this view, it is superb.

Two thoughts – why is Rogic’s first goal celebration so understated? Unusual for him.

Take a look at the Huns in the crowd at both goals. They look completely resigned, as if they expected them.”

    Two thoughts:

Tom is understated as it’s just another SPFL goal towards another three points – nothing special ;)

At about 1:16 in the video (after the winning CCV goal) one of their fans is far from resigned and throws his scarf off and tries to get onto the pitch before being put into a headlock by a fellow fan and dragged back to his seat.

I actually thought CalMac was tracking Ramsay and was only inches from cutting out the cross? I reckon had he slid in to block it he would have.

  17. AN TEARMANN – My post was written as a thank you to newco who, having done such a great job in the Europa League, were now handing over all the rewards to us. It was tongue in cheek. I did reply a bit later to clarify and say I was not in the least offended a being pulled up.

He was spot on. I did assume that them getting to the last 16 each year was the main reason we were getting automatic entry to group stages. I stood corrected.
