Prof Leitch: politicians are reason you ‘can’t go to Celtic Park’

697

I listened to a Scottish Rugby podcast with Jason Leitch, recorded earlier this week, where they discussed the reasons that appear to lie behind why the Scottish Government in their treatment of football is out of step with European countries, like Germany, France, Netherlands and others, but in-step with the Westminster Government.

Professor Leitch rhetorically posed the question you and I have discussed recently, “Why can I go to the pub and I can’t go to Celtic Park.”  Through analogy, he explained that the Government were able to permit some activities, not all.  That has never been in dispute, during a pandemic, you cannot allow all activities.

What has not previously been confirmed is why the Scottish Government has shadowed the (frankly abysmal) pandemic response of Boris Johnson’s Westminster government, instead of acknowledging the clear and undisputed scientific evidence that drives public policy among our European peers.  Professor Leitch placed responsibility for this squarely with his political masters:

“How you then make choices between sport, versus retail, versus hospitality; that comes down to decision making, by politicians, taking the best advice they can from the financial people, the public health people, the social policy people and making choices.”

Clearly the Scottish Government listens to financial, public health and social policy people before making decisions, so do Boris Johnson and Donald Trump, this allows them to act sincere, it does not make them any good.  But when Europe takes one path, which is consistent with science, and Scotland follows Westminster, which has led to some of the highest rates of mortality in the world in both Scotland and the UK as a whole, we are entitled to ask, what is going on?

They do not have a different virus in Dortmund than we have in Glasgow.  In both places, it spreads significantly more indoors than out.  It is inhibited by adherence to clear and monitored hygiene and distancing rules, like those in place at football games across the Continent, and it spreads where consistent enforcement of these rules is unmonitored – like pubs.  The difference is the politicians, not the virus.

I know this is ‘just’ football, and our consequences are nothing like the care homes fiasco, but government policy needs to shape up pandemic response in all areas.  It is not easy, but if decisions are too onerous for people in Edinburgh to get their heads around, stop following a clown in London and watch what is happening in Europe: fewer deaths, fewer infections, industry specific responses.

  1. Just checking the odds for next week – we’re 5/4, they’re 21/10 and a draw is 12/5.

They give the previous 6 games results and both teams have won 3 each, which surprised me. I thought they had only one 2 of them.

  2. seen some great players at parkhead, note the parkhead not celtic park, one was eusebio although john clark never gave him a sniff of the ball, bobby charlton and george best in a friendly in 1966 ,we beat them 4-1 think we luigi macari scored for us, but my claim to fame was bobby charlton hit a shot from about 40 yards and i caught the ball, can still feel my hands stinging now,,another true story👍😎

  3. Another poor performance and result for Vale – missed a 6 yd out header – missed a penalty band lost 0-1

Just as well the fans weren’t there.

  4. Earlier, saw Gene’s comment about REDREDRED at 3.38. Checked the TV and there he was in full view. Later went to pick up my mail and what drops out but REREDRED’s face on a Tory leaflet. Appears he has a plan to save Scotland. Could justice for all be in that plan? Did not find out as I dumped it in the trash bin.

  5. lets all do the huddle on

“A secret dossier into one of the UK’s most famous UFO sightings will be sealed from the public for another 50 years.

The file is said to contain colour pictures showing what appears to be a 100ft spacecraft hovering over Calvine, Perthshire, in 1990.

The alleged snaps were taken by two hikers in the area who saw the diamond shaped aircraft speed off into the distance after RAF jets were scrambled to the area.

A 30-year rule meant the file was meant to be declassified in January next year, but the Ministry of Defence has now blocked its release for another 50 years, until 2072.”

if theres still anyone left who doesnt think politicians and their supporting cast are all a shower of fannies then this must be the clincher

why do we put up with these arseholes?

its not that im interested in seeing the fairy story contained in the documents

its that these fuds are actually wasting public money keeping them hidden them from the public

  6. PCS contrary what’s been said on here that was the first time I heard of Johnny Crossan, couldnae understand why an Irishmhan would play for a mickey moose Dutch team and no us, wisnae aware of the sine die at the time.

The centre forward in that Sunderland side was a young Helensburgh lhad and Tradamus Lampada FP Dominick (Nicky) Sharkey who had been Brian Cloughs understudy, ironically ole big ‘eads first signing was the 3rd choice centre Renton bhoy John O’Hare.

BTW IMHO Baxter wisnae the best player tae come out of a Fife, a young Tullibody lhad was, in fact he isnae the best player tae come out of Hill o’ Beath either.

  7. lets all do the huddle on

Surely to the hikers have a copy 😉

so the online version of the down market tabloid where i read the story say that the hikers sent them the picture at the time.

they have shown the picture in the story.

    honestly ridiculous.

even the original star trek series wouldnt have such pishy looking bins

  8. Celtic Football Club statement

By: Newsroom Staff on 10 Oct, 2020 18:37

CELTIC Football Club can confirm that Nir Bitton has returned a positive COVID-19 test yesterday while on international duty.

We send our sincere best wishes to Nir and any other players or staff affected within the Israel squad. We are in constant dialogue with Nir and look forward to him returning safely to the Celtic squad as soon as possible.

Clearly, recent events during this international period are very concerning and frustrating. We have worked tirelessly to ensure a safe and secure working environment and since testing has begun our players and medical staff have done a brilliant job in very difficult circumstances.

Although we will never be complacent, throughout our own Club testing programme, our squad has returned around 2,000 individual negative tests since the outbreak of the pandemic, with not one positive test.

The current situation has presented huge challenges for all within football and wider society which we do not underestimate in any way.

While we apportion no blame whatsoever to anyone, this is now a very difficult position for us and, clearly, for all other clubs. Like all other clubs, we must do all we can to protect our squad and limit the very clear and obvious risks to players.

Under FIFA regulations, clubs are obliged to release players for international duty.

We will be maintaining close contact with international associations in order to ensure everything possible is being done with regards to the care and protection of our players. The priority must be the safety of our players at all times.

For clarification, all members of the Celtic squad who continue to train at Lennoxtown during this period have again ALL returned negative tests yesterday.

    What is Celtic testing regime?

    What is Israeli testing regime?

    What is French testng regime?

    Do they differ?

is there any alignment in testing regime going from club to country?

is there any chance we can see?in a sport we pay for

tis just the coVfusion bout the virus is only added to when fixtures are being played across europe during a time of pandemic when movement should be restricted or limited to necessity.

  13. TT,

George Connolly, I’ll give you. Personally, I think Baxter was a better player than Broonie, although they play(ed) different roles. Still, it’s amazing to me that 2 such players have come from the same wee village (I take it is wee).
