Prof Leitch: politicians are reason you ‘can’t go to Celtic Park’

697

I listened to a Scottish Rugby podcast with Jason Leitch, recorded earlier this week, where they discussed the reasons that appear to lie behind why the Scottish Government in their treatment of football is out of step with European countries, like Germany, France, Netherlands and others, but in-step with the Westminster Government.

Professor Leitch rhetorically posed the question you and I have discussed recently, “Why can I go to the pub and I can’t go to Celtic Park.”  Through analogy, he explained that the Government were able to permit some activities, not all.  That has never been in dispute, during a pandemic, you cannot allow all activities.

What has not previously been confirmed is why the Scottish Government has shadowed the (frankly abysmal) pandemic response of Boris Johnson’s Westminster government, instead of acknowledging the clear and undisputed scientific evidence that drives public policy among our European peers.  Professor Leitch placed responsibility for this squarely with his political masters:

“How you then make choices between sport, versus retail, versus hospitality; that comes down to decision making, by politicians, taking the best advice they can from the financial people, the public health people, the social policy people and making choices.”

Clearly the Scottish Government listens to financial, public health and social policy people before making decisions, so do Boris Johnson and Donald Trump, this allows them to act sincere, it does not make them any good.  But when Europe takes one path, which is consistent with science, and Scotland follows Westminster, which has led to some of the highest rates of mortality in the world in both Scotland and the UK as a whole, we are entitled to ask, what is going on?

They do not have a different virus in Dortmund than we have in Glasgow.  In both places, it spreads significantly more indoors than out.  It is inhibited by adherence to clear and monitored hygiene and distancing rules, like those in place at football games across the Continent, and it spreads where consistent enforcement of these rules is unmonitored – like pubs.  The difference is the politicians, not the virus.

I know this is ‘just’ football, and our consequences are nothing like the care homes fiasco, but government policy needs to shape up pandemic response in all areas.  It is not easy, but if decisions are too onerous for people in Edinburgh to get their heads around, stop following a clown in London and watch what is happening in Europe: fewer deaths, fewer infections, industry specific responses.

  1. Morning all

I’m in London. Have barely crossed the threshold since March, let alone got up the road to see the kids and my dad.

London isn’t getting better treatment with less restrictions. You could argue the reverse. That Johnson et al have been so keen to keep their donors happy, that they’ve been pushing people to ‘get back to normal’ aka spend money in witherspoons, pret and Costa…..who in turn give money to the tories.

Indeed it is…..but it is certainly not the most common way.

  3. A story doing the rounds, 5 Republic players out of Wales game due to Covid,4 of them played on Thursday….

    .I think we know what’s coming next…

  4. I am a tad confused (!).

Kieran and Calmac are isolated because they were in close proximity to Stuart Armstrong.

Nir Bitton was certainly very close to at least ten other Israeli players and close, also, to many Scotland players. Forther, he was close to the medical guys at both his Club and his country.

My confusion: Why are many others from those groups not being told to self-isolate?

Incidentally, I am not saying it is wrong. simply that I don`t understand the situation.

    Anyone know?

    Thanks.

Does that mean that, if you are in close proximity for 15 minutes or more BEFORE a person has been confirmed as being positive, then that is OK?

Had Stuart Armstrong been confirmes as positive before mixing with Christie and Tierney?

I feel i am being a bit dumb here :-))

Unfortunately releasing players for international duty is FIFA rules. Not any clubs choice.

    ——————————————–

    LazyD,

Fifa rules now allow clubs to refuse to release their players this month if they face a period of quarantine or self-isolation on their return.

Ajax refused to release 4 African players using the ruling.

When this international cycle is completed the number of players who will be out of commission due to positive test , or self isolation will escalate a move from the club’s.

It is only a matter of time ( probably this week) when clubs will push further and refuse to release players. I don’t think FIFA or UEFA will be able to put up any argument to counter that move.

  9. From RTE,

    *********

Five Republic of Ireland players will miss this afternoon’s Nations League clash with Wales after one squad member tested positive for Covid-19.

It has also emerged that the positive Covid-19 test returned by an unnamed FAI staff member prior to Thursday’s Euro 2020 semi-final play-off against Slovakia may have been a false positive.

That incident ruled strikers Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah out of the game, which Ireland lost after a penalty shootout.

The two players had moved seats on the aircraft bringing the Ireland squad to Slovakia and were deemed to be in close contact with the staff member who then returned a positive Covid-19 result.

However, following further testing in Dublin ahead of the Nations League encounter today and the game in Finland on Wednesday, it’s believed that a squad player has tested positive following two tests.

As a result of this, four other squad members deemed to be close contacts under HSE guidelines will miss this afternoon’s game.

The FAI said: “Stephen Kenny’s Ireland squad has received one positive Covid-19 test result ahead of today’s Nations League game against Wales at the Aviva Stadium, after the latest round of UEFA testing.

“A player – who cannot be named at this time – tested positive on Friday after a negative test on Monday but his case is not related in any way to that of the backroom team member who tested positive on Monday last.

“Talks with the HSE late last night identified four other players as close contacts of this positive case and they have been stood down from the matchday squad for today’s game against Wales.”

The FAI added: “In a separate development, the FAI can now reveal that the staff member who tested positive for Covid-19 in Bratislava on Wednesday, may have received a ‘false positive’ result.

“Two further tests carried out on the individual on Saturday have confirmed no trace of Covid-19. The HSE and UEFA have been informed of this result. The FAI will now discuss the issue with UEFA.

“In light of these developments, the FAI wishes to make it clear that it complied with all UEFA and HSE Covid-19 guidelines concerning the availability of players and the well-being of staff around the Slovakia v Republic of Ireland fixture in Bratislava on Thursday night.

  10. These internationals need stopped right now as a matter of urgency.

Why is fifa and UEFA allowed to have all these players congregating from different corners of the world when the ordinary working man can not go for a pint with his mates or have them around to watch club games in the house.

Stop immediately as a matter of national security.

  11. Hello again all you young rebels.

So Christie is at the crossroads, is he aye, and we all wait with

baited breath hoping he signs a lucrative new contract.

I personally think he has been way off the pace, his corners/free kicks are pish.

He now plays 1 good game in 5 if we are lucky.

If we can sell him Get him to Feck.

I for 1 only want players who want to pull on the famous Jersey.

I will tell you he wont even get in an EPL squad, we will never hear of him again if he leaves us.

You’re spot on. Though the links are not quite as apparent as you say. In fact, the are tortuous. But as you suggest, especially since Thatcher, money is the yardstick by which Tories judge any person’s worth.

It’s much the same with the EPL where money – any money – is the dynamic. There is endless TV discussion of Citeh and Chelsea but you never hear one curious word on how their wealth was acquired.

  14. Its all about the money, in these cases where fans cant attend its about the TV money, what I find incredible is that players will put themselves at risk to meet up travel and play, but could be and in some cases are then ineligible for their clubs who pay them, they also need to wake up and through their unions say no more until this is sorted out and safety can be enhanced for all, football is not more of a priority than peoples health, I say the same for the EUL in which we are due to participate.

  15. Man Ure and Liverpool, starting a movement to reduce EPL to 18 clubs, and get rid of the League Cup

The contact thing is a function of the course of the virus, from exposure to symptoms to outcome. You can see a good graphic of it here: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EjocoE_WkAEut0g?format=jpg&name=medium

It takes *on average* 6 days from exposure for symptoms to appear. For the first 3 days following exposure a test will return a negative result. For the next 3 days, although the infected person might have no symptoms, they are infectious to other people. They remain infectious to to others for around 10 days after symptoms appear.

A similar pattern occurs with infected persons who never show symptoms – despite feeling perfectly healthy, they are thought to be infectious to other people for a significant period of time.

Most people get a test once symptoms appear, so from day 6 onwards. *On average* they’ve been liable to infect other people for the past 3 or four days, and will continue to for the next 10. Accordingly, Contact Tracing tries to find those folk the infected person has been in contact with for the period prior to symptoms developing, as well as in the period following symptoms.

A ‘contact’ is considered someone you’ve spent 15 minutes or more with while being closer than two metres, although that by no means catches everyone at risk.

So, for example, if Armstrong sat at the same table as Tierney and Christie for lunch, they’d be considered contacts (unless it was a huge table). Armstrong tested positive when the day after he joined the squad so most likely was exposed before travelling. He played for his club on Sunday having tested negative the day before, suggesting he was exposed around Thursday or Friday last week. He would be at risk of infecting others in the period from Sunday, hence why Tierney and Christie are at risk of exposure.

In the same way, Odsonne Edouard tested positive when he arrived at the French squad, which suggests that he was exposed before he travelled, and may have been infectious in the two or three days prior to that.

Nir Bitton tested negative when he joined the Israel squad, but positive 3 days later. It’s touch and go whether he was exposed in the camp, or when travelling to it, or before he travelled.

Bitton and Edouard played for Celtic on the Sunday. There’s a fair chance Edouard was infectious that day.

Contact Tracing won’t miss the Celtic connection. Neither will the Celtic medical team.

Mind these are averages – observations from millions of cases. There are variations within this, it’s not hard and fast. Some folk are infectious sooner, some much later. Some for longer, some not at all. It remains a matter of judgment rather than fact.

Then bye bye, how many of these players have actually achieved anything with any other club after leaving Celtic….let me help you…Henrik the King of Kings, that’s it.

    So they can jog on.

Think it’s more a disappointment thingy when a good player is

agitating for a move in what is a historic season for our club and

more importantly the lifeblood of the club, the fans who stick by

them, follow them, spend their last dime to support them in far

away places, and they’re not sure if they want to be there, WTF.

If it came to a vote put the agitators into the reserves and play

those that want to wear the hoops with pride, me I’d give that

    a yes.
