Prof Leitch: politicians are reason you ‘can’t go to Celtic Park’

697

I listened to a Scottish Rugby podcast with Jason Leitch, recorded earlier this week, where they discussed the reasons that appear to lie behind why the Scottish Government in their treatment of football is out of step with European countries, like Germany, France, Netherlands and others, but in-step with the Westminster Government.

Professor Leitch rhetorically posed the question you and I have discussed recently, “Why can I go to the pub and I can’t go to Celtic Park.”  Through analogy, he explained that the Government were able to permit some activities, not all.  That has never been in dispute, during a pandemic, you cannot allow all activities.

What has not previously been confirmed is why the Scottish Government has shadowed the (frankly abysmal) pandemic response of Boris Johnson’s Westminster government, instead of acknowledging the clear and undisputed scientific evidence that drives public policy among our European peers.  Professor Leitch placed responsibility for this squarely with his political masters:

“How you then make choices between sport, versus retail, versus hospitality; that comes down to decision making, by politicians, taking the best advice they can from the financial people, the public health people, the social policy people and making choices.”

Clearly the Scottish Government listens to financial, public health and social policy people before making decisions, so do Boris Johnson and Donald Trump, this allows them to act sincere, it does not make them any good.  But when Europe takes one path, which is consistent with science, and Scotland follows Westminster, which has led to some of the highest rates of mortality in the world in both Scotland and the UK as a whole, we are entitled to ask, what is going on?

They do not have a different virus in Dortmund than we have in Glasgow.  In both places, it spreads significantly more indoors than out.  It is inhibited by adherence to clear and monitored hygiene and distancing rules, like those in place at football games across the Continent, and it spreads where consistent enforcement of these rules is unmonitored – like pubs.  The difference is the politicians, not the virus.

I know this is ‘just’ football, and our consequences are nothing like the care homes fiasco, but government policy needs to shape up pandemic response in all areas.  It is not easy, but if decisions are too onerous for people in Edinburgh to get their heads around, stop following a clown in London and watch what is happening in Europe: fewer deaths, fewer infections, industry specific responses.

  1. RPM – I want every player that pulls our Hoops top on to do well, RC included, if he thinks the Grass is greener elsewhere good luck and goodbye.

    D :)

  2. Hot Smoked Yes and we should be active in highlighting it and wary of it , this season we will see everything thrown at us to stop the ten , stick together support the Bhoys and make the Huns suffer , that’s our job as supporters , :)

  3. Even at the level I played football, I gave my all for the team I was playing for and felt that that team was `my` team.At one time, I left my team and signed for our main rivals. And just as we read about some Celtic and Rangers (old) players being good mates, so was it with us. It did not affect our effort one calorie in the games against each other. I gave everything for A when I played for them and everything for B when I played for them.

I KNOW there are massive differences in playing for Celtic but I am certain all players give their all. Some might LOOK like they are giving more but I would say that is more to do with style and role played within the team.

Giro highlights just about to start so

    Cheerio for now.

  5. so jim baxter was a good player but never a great player, what a load of baloney, if you did not see baxter playing why comment about him, he played for scotland against england and ran the show, even at one point sitting on the ball and inviting the england players to come and take it off him, no baxter was a rangers player but never a hun, he was friends with a lot of celtic players,.H.H.

Tontine Tim….re the 2-0 game vs England, I recall some half-time cheer leaders doing a dance routine with white balls…don’t know why that has stuck with me…on the pitch, second half, I remember Baxter made a block tackle on Johnny Haynes and came away with the ball. The sound of the tackle resounded around the stadium. Of course the media picked up on it, such that, not only was JB a magician with the ball but he could tackle too…personally, I always feared him against us…

Footnote…I also remember being delighted seeing the photo of Baxter with his broken leg, sitting up on the stretcher and being carried onto the plane in Vienna…

There’s also a big Christie splash in the Sunday Times, so his ‘representatives’ are clearly getting message out.

I’m quite indifferent to him and much prefer a fully firing Tom Rogic.

Indeed, he was involved in the League Cup final and the defeat at the end of last year.

In the final I recall posting a comment saying ‘Christie is running about like a girl’ and after the defeat I said he was part of ‘the powder-puff 3g’ – Mikey Johnson, Christie and Forrest, none of whom were able to retain possession and very, very, easi;y dispossessed.

Now he thinks he’s a big time Charlie. His play thus far this season has been all about him.

Manage the asset and get rid asap.

  11. TT – Pat Crerard was always very complimentary about George Best. saying how nice a guy he was.

Considering, he let him stay at his house as well, that was quite a compliment.

    Hugh McIlvanney said the same.

  12. baxter didnt sit on the ball, he did a 4 keepie up with no one within 20 yards of him, big wowee

If Ryan wants to play down south then to improve his portfolio; stop taking corners; stop taking the free kicks and stop shooting from distance.

All of these bhoy you are pish at 😵

  14. 7.45 kick off on a sunday night, i bet this game wouldnt have got a crowd even if it was allowed.

  15. The Texas Appeals Court just allowed the Republican Governor’s limit of one drop off ballot box per County. Brewster County, for example is 6,200 square miles, one fifth the size of Scotland, more than 3 times bigger than Delaware, and 600 square miles bigger than Connecticut.

So if you are elderly, poor, disabled, have no vehicle, ( there is no public transport to speak of), or afraid of getting Covid19 by going to a congested polling station, you would have to find some way of traveling the equivalent distance of Glasgow to Aberdeen just to drop off your ballot. 254 boxes for circa 30 million people. Approximately 118,000 people in Texas for each single box ( although of course they are not all of voting age).

    Absolutely blatant voter suppression.

  16. Prestonpans

A bit harsh – all to often we try and tippy tappy it around the box. Good to see a bit of shooting of course could be better.

  17. If Ryan wants to leave then so be it but for it to be a story right now then methinks there must be a big game coming up that Zombie Tax Dodgers FC are worrying about. I mean let’s face it the MSM, SFA, are all doing their Level best and getting their ducks in a row to help them and unsettle us. They are shit scared of us winning and what that means for Stevie G’s Galacticos. Time to circle the wagons and get right behind the Bhoys, HWG10IAR – Let’s slay some Orc…
