Prof Leitch: politicians are reason you ‘can’t go to Celtic Park’

697

I listened to a Scottish Rugby podcast with Jason Leitch, recorded earlier this week, where they discussed the reasons that appear to lie behind why the Scottish Government in their treatment of football is out of step with European countries, like Germany, France, Netherlands and others, but in-step with the Westminster Government.

Professor Leitch rhetorically posed the question you and I have discussed recently, “Why can I go to the pub and I can’t go to Celtic Park.”  Through analogy, he explained that the Government were able to permit some activities, not all.  That has never been in dispute, during a pandemic, you cannot allow all activities.

What has not previously been confirmed is why the Scottish Government has shadowed the (frankly abysmal) pandemic response of Boris Johnson’s Westminster government, instead of acknowledging the clear and undisputed scientific evidence that drives public policy among our European peers.  Professor Leitch placed responsibility for this squarely with his political masters:

“How you then make choices between sport, versus retail, versus hospitality; that comes down to decision making, by politicians, taking the best advice they can from the financial people, the public health people, the social policy people and making choices.”

Clearly the Scottish Government listens to financial, public health and social policy people before making decisions, so do Boris Johnson and Donald Trump, this allows them to act sincere, it does not make them any good.  But when Europe takes one path, which is consistent with science, and Scotland follows Westminster, which has led to some of the highest rates of mortality in the world in both Scotland and the UK as a whole, we are entitled to ask, what is going on?

They do not have a different virus in Dortmund than we have in Glasgow.  In both places, it spreads significantly more indoors than out.  It is inhibited by adherence to clear and monitored hygiene and distancing rules, like those in place at football games across the Continent, and it spreads where consistent enforcement of these rules is unmonitored – like pubs.  The difference is the politicians, not the virus.

I know this is ‘just’ football, and our consequences are nothing like the care homes fiasco, but government policy needs to shape up pandemic response in all areas.  It is not easy, but if decisions are too onerous for people in Edinburgh to get their heads around, stop following a clown in London and watch what is happening in Europe: fewer deaths, fewer infections, industry specific responses.

your stories of your first huns game and then the follow ups were a quite excellent read. Can you really recall all these details or have you a big scrap book you just flick through. its brilliant.

*thanks, I have an eidetic memory and the way it works is something triggers it off and wee videos go off in my head. Now the way the brain normally works we usually only remember good things such as it never rained in the summer and we played outside all day. FFS its Scotland we lived in.

For me I can also recall stuff I shouldnae which can set me back a bit but I’ve learned tae push it tae the back of my mind again.

I also have loads of books in here that I can refer to; the best is Tom Campbell’s 1945-1970 which gives you games, dates, scorers etc including Glasgow and Charity Cups, not something that can be found on Celtic Wiki although that’s another reference point but only for confirming what I know.

As you probably know I put a personal touch such as my feelings at the time intae it, which you won’t find on wiki.

what was that first Huns game, i want to go pull it from CelticWiki ?

*My first ever game against them was in 1961, I was only 13 at the time and had never been tae a deidco game then, not even with my da, as he would say he had enough on his plate looking after himself at this type of game without me on tow, my 3 ½ year older brother was the same.

However that Saturday morning I went up to Glasgow with my mother on the 8:30 train and met her family who had moved to one of the “new towns” in Bremners on Glassford Street.

The game was mentioned and I was asked if I wanted tae go, you can imagine me saying “mammy mammy please”. This was her 6 year older brother so it was deemed ok and both I and his oldest son headed off.

Outside the ground he surprisingly dropped us off and went back intae town to pick up the rest of his family to take home. After the game we got a lift on the old Vale of Leven CSC bus, my cousin knew some of the lhads from his school days in the Vale.

When I got home my da’s face was tripping him, what I didnae know at the time was the sirens we had heard while sitting in the bus park was not because of the customary fighting but a barrier had given way at the Copeland Road end and a couple of lives were lost with multiple injuries.

What I do recall from that day apart from thinking we were going tae win was deidco had a new signing Christie from Ayr United who opened the scoring and looked really good. Didnae last long though and was dumped.

My first victory to paraphrase a song “was on the 5th day of September against a deidco team we played”. 1964 and I’m now out of school and at Stow College, I had already been tae 3 other games so I was the proverbial big bhoy now.

  2. Re the earlier Jim Baxter debate I recall one Friday evening being in the Raith ballroom , Kirkcaldy when Jim arrived with a few friends and they took up more seats than they needed. This lady came back from a dance to find her seat, and the adjacent seat taken up by the bold Jim. When he refused to give up her seat and the adjacent one ,saying he was Jim Baxter of Rangers she said ” well if your arse is as big as your head you’ ll need the two seats “.

    Thought it was quite funny.

Let’s see how they shape up ~ hopefully well of course!

  10. Good morning cqn from a dreich and dark Garngad

Surprise surprise El Yamed is in doubt, how many more paid employees of Celtic Football Club are going to come down with this whilst away on international duty.

This is quite unfathomable when you think about it. Players from all over the world gathering/spreading the virus.

    Unbelievable

Yet still nothing of the Ipox players, that is incredible, what odds on that.

    D :)

  11. Time please to stop these International games, for the safety of players, staff and the country in which games are being played.

    D :)

  12. El Hamed and Bitton don’t make our strongest team imo.

Personally, I wouldn’t have started Christie against them – for me, Ntcham is a better option against them because of his ability to ride the first challenge and keep the ball better than Christie.

I think Eddie will be at least available from the bench if not starting.

It’s not a disaster by any means. It’s why we’ve such a big squad.

I’d be concerned about the testing if ElHamed is displaying symptoms before he’s testing positive. Hopefully he’s ok and available for our bench.

  13. AN DÚN on 12TH OCTOBER 2020 7:29 AM

It’s not a disaster by any means. It’s why we’ve such a big squad.

    __________

Maybe not right now but we still have the best part of a week to go. It feels like we are being disproportionately effected by the virus right now.

I don’t know where and what arrangements are in place for Edouard in France but I’m hoping he’s able to train and will come back motivated for the game.

  14. For next Saturday’s match?’s If I was Lenny, I would go with Leigh & Polish Pat up top.

& Imposing on the right wing, & our new addition AC Milan Lone player on the Left.

As for the Midfield, I would have Broony in from the Start, because Broony hardly

gives the ball away, & we all seen the difference he made, when he came on against

St Johnstone, in our last outing. I would also play David Turnbull & Tom Rogic, in

the Midfield, along with Cal-mac & Elyounussi, (3-5-2) Or (3-4-3) switch Tactics, as

we go along within this said match. So my Team selection would be 1) Bartas

    2) K. Aijer (With Julien On The Bench) 3) Shane Duffy in the Middle of our Defence

    4) & The New Addition on the Left. My Five Midfielders would be 1) Broony

    2) Cal-mac, 3) Tom Rogic 4) David Turnbull 5) Elyounussi who needs to start

stepping up to the plate @ present cause his performances have been more ineffective.

On the Bench, I would go with 1) Nicham 2) Bain & I’m sure Lenny will know which

other players to add to the Bench & he also knows about using Five Subs to our advantage.

It’s a pity that Ajeti will not be available due to tweaked hamstring along with James Forrest

Ankle problem. & Now we have the additional problem, of that pain in the you know

where region, mild form of a Virus to contain with, & we are now losing the Services

of, 1) Eddy, 2) Ryan, 3) Bitton, (who was playing well) & 4) Elhamad. Who are all now

being put on hold. (Isolation) Arr, well we should still have a large enough squad, to deal

with Sevco, & The Official Cheats, when they come calling next Saturday.

Go on the Bhoy’s, get it in there.

  15. BIG WAVY on 12TH OCTOBER 2020 8:49 AM

Is that international pish over yet?

No Big Wavy, there is still matches to be played, this coming Wednesday.

  16. Jullien played very well at Ibrox last September. He scored and defended well in the cup final last season. He had two headers cleared off the line against them in the Celtic Park defeat.

Our big games last season, he showed up in almost them all.

If Jullien is fit, he starts ahead of Bitton and ElHamed. He’s been training all last week and has another week to prepare. Himself and Duffy will be a real threat at set pieces.

No way does Bitton or ElHamed do him out of a place imo. So our bench is weaker but I’m of the opinion that Lenny is being forced somewhat to play his strongest team against them in the absence of Forrest, Christie, Bitton and possibly ElHamed.

  17. Prof Leitch: politicians are reason you ‘can’t go to Celtic Park’ 638

Yeah that is true, we are not all allowd back, until they bring out

there Gates from Hell new vaccine, which changes peoples DNA

structures, & also chips the recipients as well. & If the vaccines

goes pear shaped, which it will, then the Company who has been

assigned, to produce said vaccine, can not be held liable.

No surprise there then, & rumour has it, that Nick Hammond, also

has shares with said Vaccine Manufacturer, which is also not

    surprising as well.

  18. An Dun, Bitton & Elhamed are in 14 days lockdown mode, so they are not available

for said match. (next Saturday) As for C.Jullien, if he is Fit, yeah I would play him in

front of K.Ayer. However, CJ should not let that wee cheat, nicknamed El Buffalo,

bully him around, like he did in our League match last December @ CP. Cause

CJ, will get no protection from the Cheating Officials, that is for sure.

  19. If Ryan Christie, has tested Negative for said Virus, then he should be allowed to play.

However, our Club will have to go over the strings attached, to this said matter. In

other words, cross the T’s & dot the I’s. & Ryan will have to make sure, his floating

hands, is no where near El Cheato’s groin.

  20. Saint Stivs and David.

The juniors held a vote and the clubs voted to start the season on the agreed date of Oct 24 th.

The vote was quite close 36/31.

Subsequently clubs were allowed to withdraw for the season, if they chose.

Nine clubs have decided to do that.

    Ardrossan Winton Rovers

    Arthurlie

    Auchinleck Talbot

    Cumnock

    Glenafton

    Kilbirnie

    Petershill

    Pollok

    Whitletts Victoria.

The other 58 clubs have confirmed ( last night ) that they will start the season on the agreed date.

“There’s also a big Christie splash in the Sunday Times, so his ‘representatives’ are clearly getting message out”.

    Interesting.

An alternative interpretation from me (albeit one without facts)

There’s also a big Christie splash in the Sunday Times, so their editorial team clearly scan CQN and have identified this as a source of angst.

By running this splash 6 days out from the Glasgow derby they hope to foment displeasure among the faithful and buoy their target demographic into buying their rag …

…. Due to regrettable circumstances, the rag can’t buoy their target demographic by peddling a trophy win in 7 years or a significant player sale to stabilise perilous finances … so a negative Celtic story will have to do.

So what happens if he tests negative? Like Christie has?

If he feels better, he’s available. That’s my understanding.

This whole el Hamed story derives from a single twitter account with no Israeli news agencies picking up on it from what I’ve seen.
