Question of today, was Doncaster being honest?

136

All eyes are on whether or not Neil Doncaster will be asked to step down at the Scottish Premier League annual general meeting, which is underway at the moment, after he threatened to renege on the SPL’s legal obligations to the Scottish Football League.

It may seem obvious that he has to go but don’t be so sure that he will.  Nothing that Doncaster has said previously suggests he will easily be shamed into an act of honour, and several Gang of 10 clubs were behind his attempts to railroad the SFL into doing their dirty work.

The smart money is on him ‘doing an Ogilvie’, refusing to go voluntarily and removing the toxicity he adds to the situation from the body he represents.

In many respects it doesn’t really matter if he stays or goes right now.  If he goes the chances of the SPL recruiting a candidate with the required ability is approaching zero, it is perhaps better that he stays to explain himself.

What I’m more interested in is Doncaster’s predicted Armageddon.  In telling Scottish Football League clubs the SPL would be unable to meet the terms of the Settlement Fee they are due, he implied the top league would be insolvent today.

Question is, was he being honest? That’s a rhetorical question, no need to cast doubts of Mr Doncaster’s character.

The ticket office is open today until 16:00.  If you’ve not renewed or bought a season ticket yet, get along now!  Play your part in the fan-led rebirth of Scottish football.

One day you will be asked, ‘Granda, what did you do in the fight against corruption and cheating in Scottish football?’ Make sure you can answer, ‘I stood firm and made sure Celtic flourished’.

P.S. Buy a season ticket!!

Congratulations to Dundee on replacing the club formerly known as Rangers FC. It is tough on Dunfermline though, they should never have been relegated. Should be part of a bigger league next year. So there it is, Rangers no more, no more Old Firm!

  7. Duncan Fraser (Aberdeen FC), Michael Johnston (Kilmarnock FC), Eric Riley (Celtic FC), and Stephen Thompson (Dundee United FC) were unanimously elected as Directors of the SPL to serve alongside Chief Executive Neil Doncaster and Chairman Ralph Topping on the SPL Board for Season 2012/13.

    Best case scenario for newco.

Promotion this season, direct entry to SPL2, promotion to SPL.

Two years out of SPL1, 4 years out of Europe.

Repayment to Ticketus over several years, limited fans, limited money – ole Craigie in the background.

    Hamstrung for years and years.

So now that it is confirmed that it is to be Dundee that are Club 12, I await a major reshuffling of the fixtures to ensure that they and the Arabs are not playing at home on the same days.

  11. Today’s decision just shows that Doncaster and co have got no clue whatsoever why should Dunfermline suffer at the hands of a team who operated illegally last season…

Why should Spartans or any other team on the verge of the SFL have to wait while Sevco get a place in their place??

    It’s not over yet…

@alextomo Still many hurdles to be overcome. Sevco have no license to play football and are not allowed to play pro teams even in friendlies

Nor should they even receive a license…

I know a Hun, who was a shareholder and season ticket holder until a few weeks ago, who has decided to watch his local junior team from this season.

In his words: “People can try and pretend it is still Rangers, but we all know it isn’t.”

    Rogue,

    Easy.

You pay 50% of salaries via EBT’s in order to reduce the tax bill.

You then reduce the salary bill by half by deducting income tax + NI contributions from employees remaining salary expenditure and pocket the money.

You invest the pocketed tax + NI contributions into a high risk oil exploration company funded through a Nigerian bank at squillion percent interest.

Hey presto, moonbeams to spare. You then identify potential 50squillion squid centre forwards to carry the team up the leagues. Andy Carroll in SPL3 anyone?

What are the chances of our flag game v Aberdeen being changed from Saturday 4th to facilitate TV? Prices of flights are going up and I really need to book. Thanks in advance.

  27. South Of Tunis on

Family club Palermo have stated that Dorin Goian is free to do as he wishes [ ie —walk away ] but as far as they are concerned Rangers Glasgow owe them money . They expect Rangers Glasgow to do the honorable thing and pay their debt.

If I was Dunfermline I would be seeking legal redress re being cheated by a self serving corrupt cabal of make things up as you go along chancers.

  28. Dundee derby had a crowd of 10,000 Saturday. Dundee took a few thousand to Pittordrie on last visit. Dunfermline were a stinkin team on and off the park last season.

So, Andy Goram said he didn’t realise what the fuss was all about, he had been told Rangers were in SFL1, and the announcement should have been made almost two weeks ago, instead of wasting everyones time wating until today.

By hook or by crook, Rangers finished the season well above Dunfermline. What arguments will they present for being entitled to stay up?

  33. I’m not sure how ol’ “poker face” Doncaster can have any part in any negotiation of the tv rights contract, given that he’s already stated his view that it’s now only worth 3m per year.

For this reason alone the SPL need to get rid of him, so that the new guy can honestly state neither he nor the organisation he represents support that valuation.
