Questions are always the same, just the answers change

559

Is the club safe with Sir David, Dave King and Paul Murray?  Is Craig Whyte a worthy successor?  Is Charles Green trustworthy?  Is Ally McCoist a great manager?  For the PR hired hands at Ibrox, the questions were always the same, it was just the answers that changed.

Few have the gall to deliver the PR messages which flow out of Ibrox, and that group of clubs have depended on PR spin for decades.  Short of the communication of formal issues, like Annual Accounts and sensitive Stock Market issues, Celtic don’t utilise external PR services.

Celtic have in-house PR to facilitate media inquiries and the output of club message, but there’s no perceived need to bring in an external spin doctor to reframe reality.  This is the way it should be, of course, you’ll never win a battle in the gutter with a guttersnipe, but there are costs.

We have had paid professionals successfully briefing against our club for decades, millions of people read and listen to these messages daily.  This is a battle we will never win but the consequences for a football club trying to go about their business in an orderly manner are significant. The club, its directors, manager, players and supporters are variously painted as money-obsessed, anger-filled, flops and a rabble who hate the country their forefathers fought for.

We don’t indulge in PR excesses because Celtic have nothing to spin. They pay the taxes required to support their nation’s services, run an orderly business and are a remarkably well-respected and successful collection of fans, players, coaches and administrators. There are always unpopular decisions but the club face them down.

An eagle-eyed reader noticed an interesting aggregation in the two schools in Malawi we are assisting. Saturday’s article noted the pupil numbers at Kholoni Primary School in Mchinji as 1221 and St Josephs’ Primary School in Kasungu as 746. Go on, add the figures and see how many pupils will benefit from Celtic fans building kitchens. The spirit of ’67 is alive and kicking.

If you are driving to, or being driven to, CQteN on Friday, don’t think you can just nip along London Road and into Celtic Park. There is no access to the stadium from London Road. Access is via Janefield St, which, if you are coming from the east, means driving underneath the stadium. Make sure your taxi driver is aware.

There was a tremendous response to the whisky auction, which closes on Friday at noon, the current highest bid stands at £225. We have bottle No. 1 of a limited edition (291 in total) Craigallachie Telford’s Bridge, in a wooden box and presentation cardboard tube, whit an authentication certificate.

Bids are by email only to auction@celticquicknews.co.uk. This is a rare and valuable bottle. Shipping within UK and Ireland is included. Please include contact details and your bid amount.

Many thanks for all the kind wishes to the family yesterday, they were enormously appreciated.

Seville, The Celtic Movement, launches on Friday! Copies have landed and I hear…. it’s pretty decent.

“We are in the Estadio Do Besso on the 24th April 2003. We are far into the 78th minute of the 2nd leg of a UEFA Cup Semi-Final. The first leg in Glasgow, a fortnight earlier had seen Celtic obtain a 1:1 draw with Boavista, a relative minnow in Portuguese terms who had won their first ever top league title in season 2000/01, having only been 2nd on 2 previous occasions in their history.”

  1. On. Neymar. People are overly critical of him.

Because of his price? Or a hat trick maybe.

If he were available and within our price, I know I would have him at Celtic Park.

Well, if that is a Barca team that has lost it……….they were in control all the game, maybes apart for a few mins at the start of the 2nd haf, when cty gave it a go, then Barca got a grip and spanked them, without of getting out o 2nd gear, give them a defence, they will rule for many years, some of the football tonight was awesome, a joy to watch.

Out of respect I haven’t questioned Paul on his leader, TBP who you mention imo haven’t been very good value for money, I have seen nothing in the past few years that could justify any spend on an outside agency.

As the leader said, we have no need for spin, and I agree, but we are in dire need of balance, and that is sadly lacking.

  11. The Exiled Tim, thank you. I once was asked to have lunch with Fergus. He wanted to know if I could advise him on how to deal with the brutally unfair treatment he received from the SMSM. I told him he could never win that argument and shouldn’t waste energy trying to do so. That was before social media. Now we have the means to reach out to our own with the facts and we’re able to highlight the laughable propoganda of the brogue wearing hacks. Sadly, Fergus nor our ancestors had that advantage. Hope the mountain remains free!

We seem to be in limbo, going nowhere fast.

We are at the mercy of the rags, they spout their garbage on a daily basis, and it’s fair game, that I actually have no problem with, but when it comes to untruths of a mega nature, I have a problem, they are happening every day, and not a single snub from the club, that really bothers me, and I would hope you as well, and every other like minded Tim.

  18. Ex Celtic striker Aiden McGeady reckons Hoops fans are missing having Rangers as title rivals in the Scottish Premier League

    Mar 13, 2014 03:00 By Gavin Berry 0 Comments

McGeady said his former team mates at Parkhead could be struggling with their motivation because they are so far ahead at the top of the table.

SNS GroupAiden McGeady was back in Glasgow to talk about the PFA Player of the Year awards.

AIDEN McGEADY reckons Celtic fans who celebrated seeing bitter rivals

Rangers sent to the Third Division are now regretting the decision.

The former Hoops star believes his old club are now witnessing the impact of losing the Old Firm derby with crowds dwindling at Parkhead.

McGeady admitted he has friends who are finding it a grind to turn up for games when Neil Lennon’s men are so far ahead of the rest in

    the Premiership.

And the Everton new boyalso reckons the Parkhead players could find it difficult to be motivated with the champions having the chance to go 24 points clear of Aberdeen if they beat Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Friday night.

McGeady knows the loss of the Old Firm fixture – the last was two years ago next month – has hit

Scottish football and hopes it can return the season after next if Rangers can win promotion from the

    Championship at the first attempt.

The 27-year-old former Spartak Moscow man – back in Glasgow to help launch this season’s PFA

Scotland Player of the Year awards – said: “There were probably a lot of Celtic fans happy at the time when Rangers were demoted to the bottom league.

“But over the last couple of years they’ve probably realised it would be beneficial to have them there.

“That’s why the Champions League is so important, without that a lot of fans will say, ‘I can’t be bothered going this Saturday’.

“I know people who have that attitude. The Celtic players will have missed it as well.

“I’m not being disrespectful to the teams in the league – the likes of Motherwell and Ross County – but the other matches just aren’t the same as playing against Rangers, they never will be.

“There is probably something missing to motivate them because they’re miles ahead of the rest. If you look at it now Celtic could lose five or six games on the bounce and still win the league.

“It would definitely help if Rangers were there. The fans would also feel they’ve got more competition and then you would have that rivalry back.

“I would have liked it if Celtic were still in the Scottish Cup – if they had faced Rangers it would have been a good game.

“In a couple of years time it could be back to Old Firm games which would be good. I can understand how it’s difficult for the Celtic players when they’re so far ahead.

“The Old Firm game was right up there for me because I’m a Celtic fan and you grow up wanting to score the winner against Rangers.

“The Moscow derby is a similar rivalry but while you have 80,000 fans you have Spartak and CSKA fans sitting next to each other.

“You wouldn’t see that at an Old Firm game but I don’t think the atmosphere will be any more hostile when they finally do meet again.”

McGeady is full of admiration for the job his old Celtic team-mate Lennon has done in his first job

in the hotseat and reckons he’s done enough to earn a crack at the English Premiership.

He said: “Lenny has done nearly all he can at Celtic.

“He’s done well there, won a lot of trophies and even got into the Champions League group stages.

“He probably deserves a shot in England but who knows if he would take it. Maybe he would feel he’s done all he can at Celtic and it’s time to try his luck in the Premiership.”

  19. STEVEN Naismith has tipped Kris Commons as the likely winner of this year’s PFA Scotland Player of the Year title and although he believes the current Scotland squad is the strongest he has been involved with, he says the national team could still benefit from the Celtic player’s input.

Commons quit international football so he could focus on his club game and his family and Naismith said it was impossible for outsiders to gauge if that had been a major factor in his impressive displays for the Parkhead club this season.

“Only he can say how big the effect has been,” said the Everton striker. “For every player there comes a point when the body is changing, they are getting older, they have to make a big decision. Do you carry on travelling all around Europe, pushing your body to the limits? Kris’s performances in the first half of the season and his goal return for someone who is more of a midfielder than an out-and-out forward has been great.

“I’m sure it’s a decision he’ll stick by and think it was good.”

But he added that he would welcome a change of heart.

“One thing Darren Fletcher said when he came back was that he couldn’t believe how competitive the squad now was. It’s a hard one. The manager must want him and Kris must want to come back. Then you have competition for places, it’s not easy. I certainly think he would be an asset.

“We are all pushing for the same goals and if he can help, that would be great. I don’t think it would be that big a deal so long as he is performing well and doing well for the Scotland squad in general.”

Although complimenting the Celtic player, Naismith added there is no desperate need to entice him back, though, confident that the current international squad is as strong as he has ever known it.

“It is definitely, without doubt, the most competitive the squad has been. Over the years, since I’ve come in, there have been people brought to the squad that you’ve thought ‘he’s an addition, he’s good’ but maybe overall as a squad we haven’t produced enough. At the start of the last qualifying campaign, two draws isn’t good enough or the performances and the way we played. Now everybody wants to play, everybody is turning up, so we all understand that you have to be showing for your club and when you get your chance you have to take it.”

There is enhanced belief ahead of the new qualifying campaign. “It’s got to be a positive. For me, all around, there’s more optimism about this campaign, not only because more teams go but also the results we have had. Standards have gone up, I would say.”

“[Manager Gordon Strachan] has given the forward players more freedom to go and win things. He has given them less responsibility in terms of having to defend and when we are on it he says we are a good team and we have players who can hurt other teams. He doesn’t mess about, he just tells it like it is. He is straight with the boys and it has paid off.”
