Radical change needed to UK football

756

It’s kicking off in all directions today but keep an eye on the English Football Association proposals to introduce a series of changes to lower league football.  One option on the table is for Premier and Championship sides’ “B teams” to compete in a new structure with League Two and Conference teams.

The FA are eyeing an opportunity to allow the best young English talent, often cosseted in the youth squads of top Premier League teams with little chance of first team action, to be exposed to competitive games.  The proposal includes a geographical split of northern and southern teams.

While the FA Premier League is bust by any known measure, the Football League is in an even worse financial state.  Average income in the lower leagues is remarkably high but the steep pyramid-model, which has clubs chasing huge increases in revenue in the Premier League, leads to excessive over-spend.

With these proposed changes on the table the Scottish FA could do worse than discuss their own game’s future with their English counterparts.  Well run Scottish clubs are hamstrung by their better-funded neighbours cherry-picking their best players for a relative pittance.  Scottish Premiership clubs regularly cannot compete financially for players in England’s fourth tier.

It’s surely time to federate the top Scottish league with the English league structure.

Information slipping out of Switzerland this morning that Manchester City and Paris St Germain are each facing a fine of circa £50m for breaching Financial Fair Play rules is encouraging – if Uefa are able to deliver on the deal.

When you consider financially punishing an entity which owns the oil wealth of a sovereign nation the figure needs to be a big one.  £50m just about hits the mark.

Apparently the Great Sevco Shakedown began this morning when the club’s first every goal scorer, Andy Little, was released.  The news is harsh on the player but the club needs to learn the lesson – income needs to match expenditure.

Imran Ahmed’s court hearing today against Rangers International comes exactly three years after liquidation expert, Craig Whyte, was triumphantly welcomed into Ibrox, an ominous anniversary, for some.

What the Sevco board said to the court today and was accepted by Lord Armstrong is in direct contradiction to what they have been saying in public for 6 months to 40,000 customers.

According to the reports Sevco weren’t awarded costs for today’s hearing.

That suggests it was a close call.

Did the judge in IA’s previous judgement on this issue not decide there was a case to answer but the clumpany were not in financial distress so no need to ringfence.

The draw for the first two qualify rounds will take place on June 23 with the second round qualifiers being played on July 15/16 and 22/23.

With Celtic Park out of bounds for the Commonwealth Games Celtic will play their first two qualifiers, assuming that they qualify, at Murrayfield.

Googbhoy, do you, or anyone else, know why Celtic Park is out of bounds for the third round (assuming we get there) if Celtic Park is only being used for the Opening Ceremony?

  5. patmcgrathtakesapenalty on

It seems that game should have been a draw. Taken from the Official Site of The Rangers.

“Gallagher was brought down in the box for what seemed to be a clear penalty but it wasn’t given by the referee.

And in the melee that followed, a shot was blocked as Gers tried desperately to get themselves back into the game.

Gallagher again fell in the area when his legs were taken from beneath him but again the match officials waved away his claims.”

MSM are skillfully but inadvertly re digging their dead teams own graves by advocating that Celtic have to sell their best players.

We’ll win the league regardless of who we sell, and we’ll recruit for a good bash at the three seeded qualifiers, in the meantime we’ll bank millions in reserve, added to the huge benevolence of state aid, and we’ll be off the radar.

  7. So … all this case shows is that Donald Findlay’s pal believes that The Rangers could get their grubby mits on £500,000 should they need it.

It doesn’t change the basic financial situation that the new club is in, or make them any more likely to see the end of next season without problems.

    CELTIC…2

    Johnstone 57, Herron 64

    RANGERS…0

SECOND-HALF goals from Denny Johnstone and John Herron saw Celtic Under-20s deservedly defeat their Rangers counterparts 2-0 at Lennoxtown to keep their hopes alive of a fifth successive title.

Johnstone bulleted in a header from Filip Twardzik’s cross to break the deadlock and Herron finished off a sweeping move down the left to put the young Celts in charge.

Paul McMullan spurned a golden change for a third as his effort trickled wide, and apart from one goalmouth melee in which Marcus Fraser had to clear off the line, the Bhoys held on comfortably for a priceless three points.

The win puts the young Hoops two points behind their Glasgow rivals, who have no fixtures remaining. And that means a victory over Dundee United on Thursday will see them claim the championship once again.

Johnstone returned to the young Hoops starting XI as Stevie Frail and John Kennedy made one change to the team who put St Mirren to the sword last week. Hombert Fridjonsson was the player to drop out.

As both teams vied for supremacy in the opening stages it was the visitors who settled quicker as Charlie Telfer and Callum Gallagher tried their luck from distance.

Robbie Crawford then had a shot deflected wide and the winger came even closer moments later when meeting Telfer’s cutback, only for Leo Fasan to pull off a superb stop.

Gradually, the young Celts grew into the contest, exerting a greater control of possession, with Liam Henderson and Connor McManus shooting from long-range without troubling opposition goalkeeper Liam Kelly.

After a prolonged spell of possession, Herron’s cross from the right almost presented Filip Twardzik with a sight of goal but the Czech youngster was crowded out.

As the hosts continued to dominate possession, Filip Twardzik fizzed an effort over, and then an exquisite through ball from Henderson put Johnstone in the clear but the striker was forced wide by Pascazio and the chance went amiss.

Henderson and McMullan were becoming more prominent in proceedings and the pair combined brilliantly down the right in the 38th minute but Henderson’s final delivery was cleared for a corner.

At the other end, Burrows glanced a header wide after a rare forward foray from the Ibrox side as both teams went in level at the interval.

The pattern of play continued after the restart. A lightening breakaway from the Bhoys saw Henderson drive inside and unleash a rasping drive on target, which Kelly gathered at the second attempt.

Eventually, the home side’s pressure paid off as Johnstone made the breakthrough. After a neat passing move down the left, Filip Twardzik swung in a searching cross and the Hoops hitman powered a header in at the far post.

It was no less than Celtic deserved and seven minutes they doubled their advantage with a terrific team goal.

A flowing passing move down the left culminated in McMullan playing in Herron and he remained calm, coolly slotting home inside the post.

McMullan came close to a third when he steered a shot inches wide of the post but the youngsters showed character to see out the closing stages to claim a priceless three points in the title race.

CELTIC (4-2-3-1) Fasan; Herron, Fraser, Kelleher, Waters (P. Twardzik 84); McManus, Lindsay; McMullan, Henderson, F. Twardzik; Johnstone

A mere sideshow, the Sevco statement today regarding not relinquishing assets was the story of the day.

Think you are correct, there is a huge difference between a Club in all probability not being insolvent, having possible access to potential funds and being able to satisfy a prospective debt. And a Club that can complete a Season when running at a loss month after month.

Was it good? I fancy it.

If I remember correctly it was previously and Italian restaurant owned by Sir Dave of Murray. Like many of his other enterprises it went moobs-up.

There was another one with a well-kent Indian chef. It lasted a matter of weeks. Possibly the most suspicious of his ventures. Although there are so many that it’s difficult to pick the best scam.

    Auldheid,

IA did not need to prove his case today. The Sevco board has already done it for him many times already this season. The ruling should be viewed as an entirely expected one.

I still believe that a case has to have merit of some kind to be heard. IA case had merit.

I am not with you in the suggestion that the judiciary- especially the Edinburgh Judiciary — are automatically going to bend over backwards to save Sevco Utd.

In my experience, The Edinburgh legal set have very little time for any weedgie institution and the current incumbent version of the team from Ibrox is very much not their scene at all.

Their mob are to be found at Muirfield, Murrayfield and other sporting establishments.

They are about as far removed from the club deck as they are from Mars so I don’t see that. In fact I think there are more Celtic supporters to be found through there than Gers fans.

Lords Hardie and Gill come to mind.

The Edinburgh legal establishment is all about self preservation and self establishment– now that the cloak has been pulled from the Murray dummy they are not interested.

    Awe Naw

Gaining the judge’s sympathy and ear by whatever means is all a part of advocacy.

Give the guy on the bench his due he will recognise a fight between sheer spivs when he sees one.

I think IA was outmanoevred from what little I can read but I share PF Ayr’s concerns about saying something in the court which may come back to bite you at a later date.

However, bear this in mind– had IA ring fenced the money then any Admin would have defeated that protection so he is stuffed if he loses and he is stuffed if he wins and ah Admin follows.

It was all about arresting the dough and then forcing a quick settlement.

Now, the Gers will say to him– you can have £20,000 to piss off rather than us spend it on legal fees otherwise we will see you in court and if we win we will take your trousers off with the fees we can run up.

By the way, if you win we will go into Admin and you will get the square route of naff all!!!
