Rangers are dead. Vindication for you, for Celtic

1200

My friends in Celtic, the day has come.  Rangers are dead.  The Old Firm existed for many years but we all now know that particular duopoly was terminated years ago – on the day Murray International Holdings bankers tried to put Celtic out of business, to be precise.

Today, we stand proud and alone.

On 3 October 2008 I wrote:

“Celtic are in an exceptionally strong financial position.  They can survive the vagaries of football fortune, or economic downturn, without the threat of cutback should income dip.

Conversely, Rangers are in dire trouble.  This year will not be financially the worst Sir David Murray has bestowed on his club, but it will make for horrendous reading to any prospective buyer of the club and provide further evidence that they are hopelessly adrift of financial security.

Winning the league this season and qualifying for next season’s Champions League will not provide succour from their structural problems, it would only result in a temporary slowdown in decline.

Rangers debt has risen inextricably, and is set to continue to rise, at a time when bank facilities have become more difficult and expensive to acquire.

Should new HBOS owners, Lloyds TBS, take fright at the property-to-football conglomerate, Murray International Holdings, which includes Rangers, frankly, the consequences are so dramatic, I don’t think we should discuss them, as I have trouble sleeping when I get too excited.

We live in a time when things which simply cannot happen, happen.  When some of last year’s most credit-worthy companies in the world have gone into receivership; when one of the centuries-old pillars of the Scottish business community crumbled in days.

No company dependent on a significant increase in its debt is safe.

Rangers Football Club, 1873 – 20??”

The years since 2008 have been hard for Celtic fans.  We watched our team lose three consecutive league titles to a former club, who despite their self-evident mortal danger, continued to fund a league and Champions League challenges.

We stuck to budget and lost trophies.  This was a hard decision but it was absolutely correct.  Football regularly throws up clubs who will recklessly burn cash.  You can indulge in their lunatic ways, or sit it out, tell your fans you cannot afford to spend more, and hope that in time your judgement is proven to be right.  Today is vindication for all those hard years.

I’m not a financial analyst and never actually spend too much time reading Rangers accounts but the above synopsis was inescapably obvious – and this was years before I knew about the EBTs.  Rangers directors would have known this at the same time, if not before.  If they were blind to it, they were equally useless.  Only God above will know why they didn’t rein the horses in, lose a few leagues, but kept their football clubs in business.

  1. Totally agree with all that was said about the STV debate especially Kelly. Howeva, did you see all their faces when Kelly mentioned the handing back of trophies due to the dual contract issues, that as not part of the script had them all scrawling trying to change the subject, so kudos for that Michael

Did anyone really expect that the full weight of the propaganda machine would not kick in? This is the death of an institution that represented a people and a belief system far older than football.

Cheers mate. I’ll look out for it.

If these programmes are going to have a Celtic representative it should be someone with a contemporaneous perspective. There are many to choose from, not least our own Paul67.

To wheel out the failure Michael Kelly is an embarrassment to me as a Celtic fan and is simply more lazy journalism, or worse, it’s deliberate.

The STV guys on Twitter are decent and engage constructively but that show tonight was puerile.

Rangers fans were asked to tick the box that they thought

was the best way forward for the new club.

A/ Go down to the lower leagues and work their way up. 24%.

B/ Straight into the SPL with no sanctions. 27%

The rest declined to vote as they did not know what a box was and If I mentioned the tick again I was going home in an ambulance.

So it would appear that SKY now hold the actual power when it comes to Scottish Football. If, as these so called experts say, an SPL without THE ragers would mean financial armageddon for some clubs in the SPL then why are these clubs not demanding Sky comment on the situation?

Surely Sky need to become involved in this debate now?

  14. Kelly I’m sure is many things. I doubt one of them is a hun. I’m not a fan btw but he did pop the sporting integrity and hand back of trophies into the quicksand.

That made me smile at least.

  15. I hope folk remember that what ever replaces Rangers, whatever league it appears in and whatever season we meet it in a cup or league match, I hope that folk give them the courtesy of a famous Celtic welcome.

No hysteria of some ancient rival derby match.

No big built up of some epic encounter.

Just mild curiosity and encouragement that was afforded to the new wee diddy teams the likes of Gretna, Livingston etc.

When that happens, the ‘Old Firm’ will truly be dead

  16. Jim Spence was good. Realist if nothing else. The history, herald and financial guys all looking to play the they are ok game. They were called experts at the start. Only four that I could see were Jim Spence, Mark Daly, the uni guy and the BBC sports guy. The rest were from the newco support faction.

Yip, Jim Spence is a decent guy and a good journo with a background that is very interesting in that he studied law and came to sorts journalism through fanzines etc.

So no rank and file bull from him.

Ken Patullo…. well I have met him a few times. Begbies Traynor– that is his firm and not the love child of a trainspotting druggie and a fat journo— is quite a big Insolvency Firm, but I suspect that it is one which “passed” on the Rangers job and if so it will have been Ken that made that decision.

The Guy from the Rangers supporters association did all he could to help Aberdeen make up their mind on any vote……. he is obviously from the diplomatic core.

The only good thing about the STV show was the lady asking to see the valuations that justify the sale at £5.5 Million….. That made sense.

Anyway from now on I want all stories re Rangers and their downfall presented in some of the many voices of Johnny Morris.
