Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

    You should post more often.

I can only comment on what I see and the comments from fellow Celtic men/women that I know.

All have the opinion Ronny is a coach that could enhance our youth…never a manager of Celtic, he is out of his depth as is his back up staff.

Like most on here, I’ve witnessed bad Celtic teams and managers, especially in the cheating years which goes back further back than the EBT years.

I’ll take a bad performance, an unlucky loss and cheating officials (the norm) not a team running about like headless chickens with no leadership on and off the park.

    Time for change.

Re O’Connell he is a better ball player than a stopper…..I saw in a pre-season development game and he is slow in the turn but coming forward with the ball he is very good. I would suggest therefore that a defensive midfield player would be his best position.

Celtic will hammer EK by at least 10 goals anyone who disagrees get your dosh out

  8. Someone (sorry cant remember who) mentioned earlier about RD picking his best 11 and sticking with it unless injuries play a part. We do get an awful lot of injuries and this is down to a combination of

    1. Playing too many games – Celtic players start far earlier and play many, many more games per season the anyone else on the SPF’inHELL. Less downtime between games and seasons means we get a lot of knee/ankle and thigh injuries,

    2. Playing on poor surfaces. Some teams and even the national association seem to reckon that if they water the pitch and turn it into a tattie field they will have a better chance against us. Coupled with 1. it must really hurt limbs and joints already pushed to breaking point by playing loadsa games?

    3. Referees. Referees let a lot of niggly, snidey and continuous fouling against our players go unpunished.I am sure our players take on a lot more damage over a season than most of the teams in the league. Combined with 1. & 2. we are getting an idea of why injuries are so common.

    4. Training methods. This one I am not so sure about as I am neither a trainer nor present at the training sessions. Maybe someone here could shed some light on this?

A lot of posters will disagree and have more patience than me.

It doesn’t make me any less a Celtic mhan having a derogotive opinion on our management/board or players….just my honest opinion. HH

    Metaphysics with Lord Brodie

    by sitonfence

Judge Lord Brodie: “I find it hard not to think in legal terms, we are in a court. We are not here for our skill as metaphysicians. How does a judge deal with that? It’s not legal rules he applies it’s something else, drawing on some football jurisprudence?”

Today’s high farce in high courts took the same club concept to a parallel SFA universe. Counsel for the SFA, Mr O’Neil, summarised Mr Sandison’s argument (QC for MASH) on regulatory announcements as ” The NOMAD did it and ran away.”

Mr O’Neil who appeared to be moonlighting from his day job as a stand up comedian, was asked by Justice Brodie: “Are you saying we should identify the notion of Rangers Football Club as a philosophical idea?”

Mr Sandison QC rebutted : ” The club is not an ethereal entity that floats under, but is not, the limited company.”

When Je Suis SFA Broadfoot and Mr McRae met with John Clark of The Scottish Football Monitor, was their same club legal advice drawn from football jurisprudence? The desperate attempts of the SFA to propagate the same club argument is resulting in ridicule in court.

Mr Sandison QC stated that there was no evidence Mr Llambias was appointed to the board by MASH. He continued that: “Mr Ashley is not, never has been and is not eligible to be, a member of the SFA. Mr Ashley could not be subject to any obligations of the SFA. He owns 8% of a company that owns shares in another company, that is not an interest in a football club. This is not the approach of a corporate lawyer, it is the approach of any lawyer. These matters are not legal fictions they are the law. There is no ‘club’ separate from Rangers Football Club limited and no other concept of a club.”

When Lord Brodie inquired as to what a “reasonable bystander would think?” O’Neil for the SFA responded “The opinion of a reasonable bystander is not relevant.

Mr O’Neil posited that: ” A judicial review is not a place for detailed evidence.”

Lord Brodie countered: “The argument against you is that there is no evidence.”

Mr O’Neil then refers to exchange announcement which states “Rangers, the club and the company” and says this shows they are “interchangeable.” This by far is the most flimsy argument I have ever encountered. When simplifying an RNS, and appealing to Rangers supporting shareholders, these terms are added in parentheses to denote that they have no legal standing. However Mr O’Neil is on a roll and he rebuts Mr Sandison’s Supreme Court case precedent with: “Sometimes the Supreme Court gets it wrong.” Lord Brodie drily remarked : “I’m not allowed to have that as my opinion.” Mr O’Neil noted that : “SFA rules forbid members from appealing decisions to a public court. The power of judicial review should not extend to SFA decisions.”

Mr O’Neil now posits that “The entity that rose from the ashes of the liquidation event is the club.”

Mr Sandison countered: “In 2012 it suffered an insolvency event and a private company was set up to acquire the assets.”

Mr Sandison QC, who represented normal jurisprudence, exposed the SFA as a tinpot fiefdom of amateurs who go out of their way to avoid courts as nothing that they do can stand up to legal scrutiny. We can but hope that Mr O’Neil is booked for ‘Fit & Proper’ sequel on April 28. I personally cannot get enough of football jurisprudence.

  18. Bada bing// If you know of guys on rigs working or not, respectively suggest if you can get various trades together AND someone who has a managerial position form a company. American Oil Companies will be looking more intensely at costs now and future costs. They will be looking to ditch some/all subcontractors . Scaffolding is expensive, source price of scaffolding. Welders,Sparks will be needed, if you or one of the riggers have contacts in procurement and can get foot in door, great, then build up. Surely there must be someTim, itching to get rid of nightmare subcontractors.Contact companies when you have team together and business plan then forward it to companies, stating all your positive points, price and commitment.

Surely it’s about time Peter Lawwell took a lead from Broon and Griff and took personal responsibility for what happens next?

I work closely at times with political spin doctors, but even that crowd might blush at this attempt to draw virtue from our levelling down to Aberdeen’s standard.

All of that said I accept the logic that we need to unite to get the league won this season. This is a team that has proven itself to have no mental fortitude whatsoever and would in my view be completely unable to cope with the fans turning on them. It was one of the strangest things I can remember seeing when Griffiths’ goal on Wednesday was greeted with total silence. The danger is that our anxieties about losing the league become self fulfilling.

However, I remain livid at the completely unnecessary state of the club. It’s not the result of a mistake so much as the deliberate policy of Lawwell and Desmond. Lawwell is an austerity addict in all things except his own remuneration. Lenny saw the writing in the wall and decided no job then a gig with an insolvent Championship club was a more attractive career choice.

However, I’m willing to set aside these complaints until June provided this helps our beleaguered team and there’s a promise of real change in the summer. And by that I don’t just mean our under qualified, scapegoat manager. I mean cheerio to the architects of “the strategy”.

  22. Is it safe to come on yet?

I totally understand the frustrations; the manager for me should have been gone after Malmo. It’s all been covered as I’ve read every post since Pittodrie. My dream is a new management team and an owner who really cares as much as we do. I may be waiting a long time but it’s Celtic for me…how dare I give up on a history as rich as ours because we lose a couple of games and the manager doesn’t suit. We are a remarkable story, in rude health and long may it continue.

As we’re now down to the wire with just 10 remaining standing then, in accordance with the original rules, from now on in we’ll publish the individual choices each week. THis week’s pick will be on here in about 15 minutes time – allowing the competitors the chance to get their excuses (retaliation?) in first. ;-)
