Remarkable distractions need to end

424

The worst way to end a bad week was for a loose-mouthed agent to pitch up at Lennoxtown on Friday before setting off on a rant because Brendan Rodgers was not available to him at a time he wanted.  We had a remarkable week of distractions in and around the dressing room.  These things often correlate with a poor result.

Brendan would be pleased to get his players out of the country yesterday, giving him two days to focus the squad on the matter in hand – tomorrow night’s Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens.  This is where the manager earns his money.

Only a unified squad will have a chance of getting the required result against AEK.  The better players in the first leg against AEK were these settled at Celtic for the long-term – McGregor, Brown, Tierney, Ntcham, Forrest.  Tactical conversations will be needed, but the first thing Brendan needs to infuse into the squad is a laser-like focus.

You don’t have to walk far from Celtic Park to find people whose lives are far from that of a privileged first team and international footballer. I get it that away from that bubble, football is not all that glamorous but now that babyboyata is not surrounded by hazard, de bruyne etc. I hope he can listen to more measured opinions. Walk any direction from CP, knock on a door and ask the people inside how much money they have for the weekly shop and the answer will not be 5K. Grow up Dedryck, you’re bloody lucky!

I hope tomorrow night doesn’t undo the hard work we have done in Europe the last 5 + years. Recently, we’ve been able to take batterings from the moneyed clubs and styill turn in good performances in the next game. A united squad and quality on the pitch who know their job has got us to this point. The rest of the defence can tell this charlatan where to go.

“If a player wants to leave and feigns injury/refuses to play, does it matter if there’s a replacement??”

Presume that comment is aimed at mine. I don’t believe Boyata was on strike prior to the EPL window closing and, while we don’t know underlying circumstances, I doubt Brendan believed he would refuse to play. In those circumstances, it’s more reasonable to reject a bid (especially as we are in the middle of CL qualification).

We can all agree that it’s bad management on our part to not get a replacement lined up, as it was evident given his contract status that there was a likelihood that he may leave this window.

So, Scott Brown & Naismith cited for incidents on Saturday.

If Brown found guilty could miss Huns game.

I know that answer to that one.

Level 5 been trawling the game from every camera angle…….

  4. The biggest threat to Celtic…………….is Celtic. How very true.

Unity is our strength division is our weakness.

When one Big successful ego goes head to head with another big successful ego it always results in one winner…….but who will it be.

Boyata decision is Brendan’s two fingers to Pedro.

Negative press and club taking a kicking in press and tv (check ssn and sky news ticker tape today) could be seen as karma for the boards inaction on res 12 and FTSFA actions. But to run to a bbc churnalist to leak against our manager……..unforgivable for me.

If we loose Brendan over this I have no doubt Pedro will follow him out the door. What decent manager wants his ceo picking the clubs signings…….who would we get to replace Brendan….another Ronny project…….anyone. Either way. Stadium will be empty as fans react,

  5. mullet and co 2 on

Boyata has refused to play and his agent has said he will sit out the rest of his contract.

The agent has lowered what Celtic can ask for from last weeks EPL boosted sums.

The only solution would be fit Celtic to offer the same salary Boyata has been offered elsewhere. Not going to happen.

Get what you can and move on.

  6. Mike in Toronto

Agree with you, but nonetheless we DO have the best squad in Scotland by a country mile and in no way should they feel any sense of inferiority. it really is up to us to play a high pressing game with two strikers. The rest will take care of itself (fingers crossed)

Great to see Izzy back as well and I think he could be the answer to our so called full back issue. Either he or KT could play right back, remember Danny Mac for Scotland!!!

  7. I saw the Brown Naismith collision of head on elbow on SFM .

    Wonderful stuff in the circumstances.

If dealt with this week giving anything more than a 2 week ban to Scott would look like more than justice at play. Scott could benefit from the rest.

  8. Can someone just reboot Celtic this week ?

Take the plug out and put it back in kinda thing….

Nothing else seemed to work last week.

    Thanks in advance.

The rot had set in long before then. I think we won something like 9 or 10 of our last 21 games. Needed reinforcements in the Jan window.

Agree with the rest of your post though.

No Celtic fans recall it because it wasn’t shown on SKY nor Sportscene who never even showed Naismiths antics, Its there now though and as Bada says probably the work of Level 5 and the Biased Broadcasting Co

    NAS NA RI,

The way Celtic are meant to operate is the way all other top clubs operate in terms of signing players.

The scouts identify players, Congerton has a look, Rodgers has a look. They refine and tell Lawwell who they want.

Lawwell then looks at the scouting report including the current deals the players may be on and likely transfer fee and a decision is made on whether they go for him or not.

You have taken a blanket view that Lawwell has the sole discretion on who Celtic sign as though he just ignores Rodgers and Congerton and numerous scouts we pay good money to.

I can’t see your view of the issues being true.

My take is that human nature enters the process and somewhere decisions are made that leaves Rodgers and Lawwell at odds with each other.

I would guess that one of the issues would be Fabian Schar for instance. Rodgers had him scouted and wanted him and we knew the buy out was £3m. Presuming that £3m was not excessive for a Swis International who played in Spain I would then presume wages were an issue as he ended up at Newcastle.

Did we agree the fee and try to haggle for too long before agents got involved and got him a better deal at Newcastle?

I make no apology for banging on about this as it is important.

Interesting article by the Greek lawyer — the timing is incredible.

It’s relevance to our current situation reminded me of those homework sites where you can send them in a question for them to answer.

However good as it is it does not fully address our current situation.

We are a 3 level puzzle not the 2D owner / manager as Described.

We have a DD who really is a DD — Distant but dominant — main shareholder.

Then the have PL the bag carrier / factor — who has delusions of grandeur even though he is a second rate bean counter with no idea of a growth agenda or what it takes to generate one. History of repeated failure over 15 years based on poor negotiating, cheap buys and agent friendly dealings.

His basic operating instructions of keep it calm / don’t cost me money / don’t embarrass me from DD have been expanded to cover nearly aspects of the club’s business including areas where he is singularly not qualified to get involved with.

Finally we have BR who has the player management responsibilities but does not have full support from above. According to the academic analysis this has challenges but can be solved in 2D — 3D might be more of a challenge that could involve some changes to responsibilities.

  22. !!BADA BING!!

Aye I posted what Stubbs said last week because it’s really important and has set the precedent the rest of the season will be built on as we saw on Saturday when Naismith kicked Johnny H:((

The referees and the SFA are poor beyond belief in respect of just following the laws of the game and FIFA/UEFA directives:((

Any other league in the world the miniscum would have finished the game with 7 or 8 players.

Worrying so early in the season to see the rule book getting ditched..

  23. Regarding Steven Caulker

I know someone who has spent a lot of time with him since he has been up in Scotland,

From what he has told me Celtic should be going nowhere near him.

  24. Paul67 et al

Peter Lawwell put more effort into selling Boyota than he did about signing McGinn. Simple as that. Brendan left without MgGinn, who went straight into Aston Villa’s team, and with now with an unhappy Dedryck. Poor show all round. A bona fide case study for any schoolteacher (eg Hamilton Tim) who needs to sort out a playground dispute!

  25. If Brown is offered a 2 match ban for Serious Foul Play or Violent Conduct then he would be banned for Saturday and the league cup match against Thistle. I think the media are clutching at straws a wee bit there.

  26. I’ve had a look at the Scott Brown clip. Nothing in it.

Serious question, how did it actually get raised with the compliance officer?

  27. Damn ….too slow ………tickets for The rangers gone already . Only just got the e-mail but they’ve been snapped up within an hour at £50 each.

  28. Brendan would be pleased to get his players out of the country yesterday, giving him two days to focus the squad on the matter in hand – tomorrow night’s Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens. This is where the manager earns his money

    ——-

Hope the last sentence wasn’t a thinly veiled swipe at Brendan. It could be interpreted as suggesting he does the work with the players and perhaps not some other stuff, like recruitment. Maybe I’m just too cynical.

I suppose one could ask where Peter Lawwell earns his money. I would suggest as CEO, strong leadership would be near the top of the list. Sorting out this mess would be a start, regardless of who or what caused it.

  29. by which i meant the league cup game against thistle then the game the following saturday :)

The rot did start in January with the decision by WGS and PL that the squad did not need Fletcher.

However the LC line up with McGeady in the centre along with Scott McDonald never played again. JvOH came in after injury and was poor in the run in by his earlier standards.

I think the ban relates to the competition in which the offence took place.

A two match ban is for two league matches.

Load of nonsense anyway,if SB gets a ban for that, bearing in mind the Morelos fiasco,we need to go tonto. Quite clear that clubs are being judged differently.
