Remarkable singlemindedness of O’Riley

245

The arrival of Matthew Sean O‘Riley (surely, nominative determinism at work), our fifth signing of the window, looks like another incredible bit of business by Celtic.  Like Moussa Dembele, he signed senior forms with Fulham as a 16-year-old.  Whereas Moussa experienced regular first team football in his third season there, Matt found opportunities rare, so declined a three year contract  in 2020 and left the club.

That contract offered the then 19-year-old financial security.  Instead, he went looking for first team football elsewhere and was without a club for six months.  He spent the time training with MK Dons, whom he eventually joined in January last year.

This is a remarkable example of singlemindedness, I cannot recall anyone else in the game going without money in the hope that they better their long-term prospects.  At the time he would have been asked, “What if you get injured?”  It was a risk that had a significant probability of not paying off.

I love this attitude.  Matt will enjoy life at Celtic, but be clear, he is here because we have made him a career enhancing offer – not a career ceiling.  Like so many before him, he will want it all in the EPL one day, which is actually a good thing.

MK Dons fans and EFL analysis rave about his abilities.  He has been a star there and was destined to go higher soon.  Dons confirmed we relieved them of his services due to a buy-out clause (I expect the same is true of this month’s Japanese imports), reportedly £1.5m.

Michael Nicholson is playing a blinder in his first transfer window.

If I’m wrong on the Findlay case I apologise. I must’ve read about that more than 10 years ago and my covid fogged brain might well be playing tricks.

In common usage the statement “the Catholic cathedral in Derry is called St. Eugene’s” is sectarian because it denotes the sect to which the cathedral belongs. This is because the adjective sectarian relates to the noun sect as well as the noun sectarianism.

However, it doesn’t mean that the statement has anything to do with sectarianism. Because sectarianism is the prejudiced and bigoted belief that someone is inferior (or superior) simply because of the sect to which they belong.

You maintain that rebel songs are sectarian. Is that because they denote & identify a sect or because they are an example of sectarianism?

Where I come from sectarianism has for example seen people abducted in the boot of a car from the estate where they live, brought to an abandoned building, tortured to death, with their mutilated body then dumped back on the streets of that estate, as a warning. Simply because as that person was taken from there they must’ve been one of them, whoever them are.

However, you’re correct that sectarianism is not illegal. There is no thought police. People are free to think what they like as long as it doesn’t impact on the rights & freedoms of other people.

Orange walks are not illegal. Practically everyone would agree that they are sectarian in that they identify and denote a particular sect(s). I leave it to you to decide whether they exhibit the prejudiced and bigoted belief that some are inferior simply because they belong to an excluded sect.

    Hail Hail

  2. Has Alan Crawford been out to defend his refs against this weeks vicious attack yet?

Have the refs confirmed the date of their strike action?

All seems a bit inconsistent otherwise.

Almost as though there is some unconscious bias at play. Well, maybe a little conscious bias too

  3. Losing Rogic and Maeda isn’t good but it’s a far cry from where we could have been going into the next few games.

I suspect despite what Ange said yesterday that we will see Kyogo return for the Glasgow derby.

Even if he doesn’t, I’d be confident regardless.

  4. Good morning all from a crisp Garngad

Uncle Jimmy – bang on, great post.

As I said yesterday every club has a right to complain but the brass neck of this club cannot be ignored and the complaint should have been answered swiftly by all at the SFA and referees Association.

As someone said yesterday the referees Association should be run by independent contractors with proper rules put in place like declaring which team you support or supported and to protect individuals not letting them referee their fav team etc.

Unfortunately we live in a cesspit of a country where in 2022 we are a major backwater of sectarianism and bigotry and not 1 politician or sports official wants to clean it up.

    Shocking really.

  8. Looks as if we are going to be without our most creative midfielder and down to one untried centre for a few crucial games.

    Not ideal.

Since 2018-19 Rangers in the Premiership have had 21 goals that should’ve been chopped off allowed to stand, more penalties than any other club in Scotland, until Tuesday never had a player sent off since 2019 yet have the audacity to complain about the standard of officiating…
