Risky Ronny, win a new Celtic shirt

712

I can’t argue with John Hughes winning the Manager of the Year award.  Without glossing over the obvious semi-final issue, he’s taken Inverness to stick-on favourites for the Scottish Cup and, for a while, stuck with Aberdeen in the Best of the Rest fight.  The second half of the season have seen fortunes fade, but this reflects the resource paucity he has, compared to Dundee United or Aberdeen.

What’s just as clear is that Ronny Deila would have been a contender for the award.  Appointing a manager is always a risk.  Gordon Strachan was as safe a pair of hands as you could hope for in 2005, but it took nerves of steel for him to cope with some early reversals.  Tony Mowbray was also a known quantity, who should have done better, but rookie Neil Lennon pitted against experienced Walter Smith was highly risky.  Neil could have sunk without a trace, instead of winning all those trophies.

At least Neil knew the club and the club knew Neil.  Appointing a guy from one of the smallest professional clubs in Europe, totally unknown in the Scottish game until Celtic scouted Stefan Johansen, was an almighty risk.

What we recruited was a philosophy.  Celtic knew how a football team should be prepared, how to recruit, what tactical intelligence was required in a manager, and they travelled to Strømsgodset to find their man.

Had he qualified for the Champions League group stage, I reckon Ronny would have won Manager of the Year, but as this is the standard Celtic managers are judged by, he missed out.  There are no guarantees in football, so qualifying next season cannot be taken for granted, but he should be better prepared.  As should the players.  This is the target, Ronny.

SPECIAL COMPETITION ALERT

Celtic sponsor, Magners, have offered two of the new home shirts, launched yesterday, as competition prizes.  To win one, all you have to do is answer the following question:

Who is the Celtic assistant manager?

Email your entry to celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the assistant manager in the SUBJECT line of your message.  Competition closes at 1pm tomorrow, so you have one day to get your answer in.  Terms and conditions apply.

These are two fabulous prizes.  While you are entering the competition, you might want to donate £1 to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen campaign.  You can do so here.  Thank you.

Many thanks to Magners (who get what we’re about).

The interesting thing about the Police raid on Sports Direct is that it relates to the circumstances around Charles Green’s acquisition of the assets from D&P.

Perhaps Uncle Mike provided the ante that Charlie needed to complete the deal? Who knows.

The legitimacy of the ‘novation’ of Sevco 5088’s rights to buy the assets to Sevco Scotland has been the subject of much speculation, 5088 having ‘irrevocable’ rights in that regard.

In the event – and with the passing if time it becomes less likely – that the novation is deemed to have been unlawful, a shedload of stuff hits the fan at speed.

We know, for example, that SD currently owns the ‘Rangers’ IP rights – that is, the current club calling itself Rangers FC does not own the rights to call itself ‘Rangers FC’, having given them to SD as loan security.

It’s entirely possible that, at law, it never has owned these rights.

That would make for all manner of merriment.

TBB-A story i heard was Green got Ashley involved with the huns,as he owed him money,he stepped in ,they cut up the kit deal between them, with Ashley getting the lions’ share….allegedly of course…

  8. It’s actually the amount of Police investigations this club have had in the past seven, five? Years that blows me away, with not one single arrest, and not one charge has stuck to any one person or persons, and the farce is that we all know who they where and yet not one is held to task, the untruths and thieving that’s been going on here is shocking, if ever there was proof that the old boys club is alive and kicking it’s over at Ibrox.

Scottish football will move on as soon as the rest of Scotland grows a set here and starts asking questions about the going on with this toxic club.

  9. Happy Birthday Paul67 – have a brilliant day my bhoy.

There were worse months & years to be born in than May 1967, that’s for sure.

The really interesting thing about the polis raid on Sports Direct is that they seem to have put the brightest bulbs on the case:

“One detective said we could go into the canteen while the search was ongoing but people wanted to know what was happening so we stayed there. At one point, the detective asked if any of those in reception was David Forsey (Sports Direct Chief Executive) but when we said he wasn’t there, he said we were all free to go.”

I wonder why they didn’t google Forsey’s image before they went in.

  12. Morning fellow Tims

    ROCCOBHOY NEEDS HELP.

    irst post in ages.

I am going to cut a very long story short. I am flying over from Dublin on Sat coming and going to Aberdeen on Sunday. When I booked flights I assumed game would be a 12.45pm kick off instead of a 2.30pm kick off.

Anyway I am traveling up on the Lisbon Lions CSC bus from Glasgow city centre on Sunday morn but ideally I need a lift back in a car on Sunday post match as opposed to coming back on the LL CSC bus. My flight home from Glasgow airport is at 9.55pm, I need to be at Glasgow Airport for 8.50pm Sunday evening. My mate who runs the Lisbon Lions CSC wont be back in Glasgow til close to 9pm he reckons, however a car would be back a good half hour at least before that. SO, IF ANY1 HAS A SPARE SEAT IN A CAR THAT IS TRAVELLING BACK TO GLASGOW POST MATCH AND COULD HELP AN IRISH BHOY OUT, IT WOULD BE VERY, VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

My E mail address can be accessed through Paul who runs CQN if someone wants to E Mail me offering me a seat back in their car to Glasgow. As I say I need to b at Glasgow airport for 8.50pm.
