Rosenborg or Valur, if Celtic progress in Champions League

231

If Celtic overcome Armenian champions Alashkert in the Champions League first qualifying round, they will face either Icelanders, Valur, or our old pals, Rosenborg, from Norway.  The Norwegians and Celtic will be overwhelming favourites to progress from the opening round.

Rosenborg gave Celtic a fright a year ago when they took a 0-0 draw from Celtic Park in the Champions League third qualification round.  A James Forrest goal settled the return in Celtic’s favour.

Rosenborg went on to eliminate Ajax from the Europa League, winning home and away, before finishing third in their Europa League group behind Zenit St Petersburg and Real Sociedad.  Norwegian teams play through the summer, so Rosenborg have played 27 games since their winter recess.  This will be a stiff test for Celtic, should the first round go to form.

  1. REGULATORS have brought fresh legal action over the failure by Rangers chairman Dave King to make a judge-ordered £11 million bid for most of the club’s shares.

It has emerged that representatives of the Takeover Panel were in the Court of Session on Tuesday in a private session in front of Lord Doherty as the impasse over the issue continues.

Last month the Takeover Panel was granted a court order which forbid any attempt by Mr King’s South African-based Laird Investments (Proprietary) Limited from making the mandatory offer to thousands of shareholders without a third party confirming that the funds to support it are there.

The Rangers chief who says he has the funds in South Africa rather than the UK has since accused the Takeover Panel of “bullying” while confirming the club hoped to raise £6 million of fresh capital from a share issue “before June”.

The Rangers chief has already been told that he is in breach of takeover rules by failing to make the shares bid by a deadline of April 26.

Rangers International Football Club plc stated in early May that it understood that the funds for the offer are there and that Laird was seeking South African government approval to allow the money for the offer to be transferred to the UK.

Lord Carloway at the Court of Session dismissed an appeal in March forcing a bid for 70 per cent of the shares to be made after agreeing that Mr King and others acted together to force their way into the Ibrox boardroom three years ago and ousting a board of directors said to be allied to Sports Direct founder Mike Ashley.

That meant under the code of takeovers and mergers, an offer should be make to all other shareholders at the highest price paid in the 12 months before the offer was announced.

It came after the Takeover Panel originally decided that a formal takeover should have been triggered after the Three Bears group led by Mr King secured more than 30 per cent of the voting rights in Rangers.

  3. Going through some old videos while on the choo choo. Just noticed something simple but brilliant from Edouard. When the cross comes in on 82 mins it is cleared, the first touch and pass to Dembele from Eddy is pure class and it enables the counter attack. Just think how many players would have swung a leg at that ball instead. Just shows how little things can make a difference.

  8. Will Rogic, Lustig & Boyata return to the squad as soon as their WC is complete?

Will they need a break given they’ve all missed a large chunk of last season with injury so should be relatively fresh?

Even if they take a couple of weeks break they wont have lost any match sharpness and be ready to go straight into qualifiers.

Given Australia will probably be out by next week, possibly Sweden as well, Rogic and Lustig should be available for 2nd round qualifiers, possibly 1st round.

Boyata will probably be there until closer to the end of the tournament so may not be back until after 2nd round ties.

This is a myth; like every other day, 21st June is 24 hours long: no less, no more.

However, tomorrow the sun rises at 04:31 and sets at 22:06 giving us 15 hours, 35 minutes and 1 second of daylight, 3 seconds more than today. This compares with 6 hours, 58 minutes and 51 seconds of daylight on 21st December this year. This is a difference of 8 hours, 36 minutes and 10 seconds of daylight.

Both days remain 24 hours in duration.

  13. GARY67 @ 8:06 AM,

It never ceases to amaze how Mr King is allowed to operate the way he does.

My guess is the accusation of bullying against the takeover panel and further accusing them of not giving him enough time (3years!?) to comply brought him some more time.

We also have the situation of the £6M share issue before June, why aren’t questions being asked!?

All we have is the MSSM slabbering over the Gerrard revolution.

I’m not sure what yesterday’s Court Hearing was all about, we can only presume, having given DCK ample time, that they intend to take enforcement action.

Is he hoping he is forced out? Taking credit for putting the Club in the right direction and leaving someone else to pick up the huge issues… I don’t know but with much of DCK’s actions, it’s a bit of a head scratcher.

I noticed another piece in the Herald yesterday, regarding the insolvency practitioners stuffing the poor Rangers creditors.

Including 6,000 Rangers supporters out of their debenture money.

Wasn’t it SDM that promised these guys a seat for life? Wasn’t it his Rangers that got the money? Wasn’t it his recklessness that brought the Club to insolvency?

I’ll guess we can expect to see more on the big bad insolvency practitioners and silence on the Real Rangers Men.

Well, ToP really can’t ignore this situation, it could set a precedent.

My understanding was the next steps were to cold shoulder DCK and by extension Sevco or to to seek a contempt of court order – potentially leading to gaol time.

I’m sure giving the Clubs “Institutional” status, it’s a step neither ToP or the Court can take lightly… DCK has been playing on this but surely his time must be up.

The way he’s been trying to intimidate the SPFL and SFA just makes it more galling…
