Sent this pretty much as a mail to a good friend, and all-round top CQNer.

    It is about Universal Credit.

It’s his job to know these things, and help. He does it pretty well. But sometimes there’s a kicking due to the Tory targets.

I was told last week that certain UC claimers will not receive benefits in December as it is a five week month. And that because of the break this causes, they will have to reapply!

Surely not. But seems benefit calculated annually, divided by twelve, then by four. Paid weekly to those claimants.

Not really bothered about a reply if I’ve been sold a pup-I sure hope so! But maybe worth a look?

Btw,the guys I was talking to have to travel to Saltcoats by bus every time they are told to attend their-now-local jobcentre. Which is about twelve times a month.

That’s over £40 from a payment officially designated as the minimum level to live. Shut down the JC in Kilwinning, costing people on £70 a week a tenner or more!!

    I give up.

I watched the film I, Daniel Blake just the other day. Brought back some memories as I was in the same situation 4 years ago as i couldnt work for a few months. Not easy living on £70 a week and if you get sanctioned, well you get nothing. Sometimes when I think i’m badly off I look back and think, No pal, you’re in Paradise.

UC is paid weekly in arrears after 6 weeks when the initial monthly income being calculated (the extra 2 weeks is for processing).

In December, many people will get extra income (getting paid early for Christmas) so a significant number will be over the average income limit and their UC will stop; so in January they will need to re-apply although the payments should commence pretty much immediately. It’s an absolute shambles and will leave many short of money at Christmas.

I would love for some Tory to explain that to me /

Not seen the film, but I don’t think I need to.

Problem is that nobody cares. It really is don’t care it’s not me

I’ve known plenty of people who could sue for copyright on that film. Me included.

I was always told that you pay in to get help when you need it. Mibbe not. Mibbe I’ve been lied to all my life.

  11. BMCUWPs As with most of Ken Loachs films the trouble is its not like a film, its like watching real life. And you’re right, nobody cares, not any more.

BJ, when they say UC gets people back to work what they mean is its gets them off the jobless figures. Which is entirely different. People have been driven to suicide.

  12. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

    Good Morning.

In my teenage years there were quite a few occasions when I would wander up Byres Road, cross over to Queen Margaret Drive, hang a right up Wilton Street and wind my way along its curve towards Maryhill Road and Firhill for Thrills.

I was always a Celtic fan, grew up in a household of Celtic fans but at the same time was encouraged to look out for my local team which happened to be the jags.

I also looked out for Clydebank as that was my hometown for the first few years of my life, but Celtic was always my main team – my heart and soul team.

However, The Maryhill Magyars were, and still are, a great wee club to follow.

Part of my love and admiration for Thistle came from my big cousin Stephen who followed the Jags regularly and would always sport his red and yellow scarf with pride. I would walk with him to Firhill in those early years and would share nonsense chats with him about the muddy state of the pitch, Denis McQuade’s uncontrollable legs and his seemingly intermittent footballing brain, Alex Rae’s ability to get caught in the mud, Johnny Gibson’s ability to do amazing things at the wrong time, Jimmy Bone’s weight, Joe Craig’s deceptive pace, Glavin’s ability to boss, and Roughie’s ability to make a draw a win.

And the ability of Partick Thistle fans to always believe that they could win — despite the statistics always suggesting otherwise.

I recall my dad, Stephen’s dad, and my uncle Jim all telling Stephen they would each give him £5 for every goal Thistle scored in a certain league cup final! The smile on his face when he walked away with the fortune that was £60 was terrific!

In later years I lost touch with Stephen. A variety of family circumstances and an age gap meant that our paths went in different directions.

Earlier this year I learned that he lost his wife suddenly which was very sad. Even sadder was the fact that my once ebullient and very nice guy cousin had lost himself to the bottle.

He openly admitted his problem and started to call my mum who, at 85, started receiving calls from her long-lost nephew for reasons and in circumstances which I didn’t think were healthy.

His sister tried to give him all the help she could despite living hundreds of miles away and suffering from her own health problems. She would turn up each week with one of her kids and change sheets, wash clothes, buy some messages and make sure he was cared for.

Yesterday, she discovered that these are trips she will no longer have to make and my mum will not be receiving any more phone calls.

None of us know our future, nor the future of people who play a big part in our lives for a period of time be that a short time or a long one.

I have had the privilege to work with people who suffer from addictions whether that be drink, drugs or whatever. I have seen folk beat addiction in a variety of ways – on their own, with help, in a group, with family and so on.

I have also found addicts up closes with the needle still in their arm but with life sadly missing, and have said “cheerio” to people whom I expected to see the next day but sadly never did.

Stephen can no longer be tormented by his demons and worries. He has gone to a better place and there will be no need to worry about him any more. I just wish he had called more, or maybe that I called him — maybe things would have been different.

    Maybe.

I have never met a recovering alcoholic who I have not been proud to know though I very often keep that thought to myself.

Today, however, is not one of those days.

If anyone reading this suffers with an addictive problem rest assured you are not alone, there are people rooting for you and that there is always help available.

Most of all, remember that there is always hope, there is always a better tomorrow and that corners can be turned.

I do not mean to preach but sometimes the odd word on a blog like this makes a difference to someone – somewhere.

Meanwhile, one day somewhere I will no doubt see Stephen somewhere along the way.

Firhill for Thrills — and a lot of good memories.

And God rest wee Jana Navotna. She was a tough wee cookie who played at the same time as Steffi Graff and Martina and didn’t always lose.

Those of us who can still draw a breath this day have a duty to live and make a difference somewhere.

    Others are not so lucky.

  13. Greetings from Paris -7 degrees and cloudy .

Went to this – Saturday -late afternoon –

    PSG 4 — Nantes 1 .

A walk in the park — Nantes (5th in the league) parked the bus . At 2-0 PSG dropped the pace and played walking pace keep ball . Lack of attention saw them conceding a sloppy goal . That seemed to irritate them -cue upping the pace and scoring another 2 . Bit profligate — Created lots of chances but they have a tendency to seek the Hollywood goal .

Out of touch me learned that Claudio Ranieri is Manager of Nantes . Pre match media stuff saw him being asked this “-How do you stop PSG -?” – Field 22 players ! . Post match saw him stating that the result was to be expected but he was pleased with his team — ” played to their best abilities — all you can ask — PSG are very very good “.

Not much atmosphere — stadium has been sanitised for a middle class audience — Mad mental Ultras / hooligans have been barred / priced out of the stadium ..Football as entertainment !

Fab shift from Verratti — a totally different player than the one who turns out for Italy — midfield metronome — 5 yard / 10 yard passes / angle / angle /angle ..

Morning Bhoys from a wet Central Scotland a big week approaches for the Bhoys and if it were me i would send out a shadow team against PSG for me even if we send out our strongest team I cannot see us picking up any points in Paris. However,we have a big game on Sunday the league cup final against Motherwell and it would ensure our strongest team was well rested for Sunday which will be no easy game against an in form Motherwell. H.H.

IMHO, quite simply because too many Labour MP’s in England spent their time looking to shaft Jeremy Corbyn (aided by the BBC) rather than uniting against the Tory campaign. In Scotland, Wee Jimmy Krankie’s spin and Labour’s inept leadership allowed the SNP to dominate again; though the election of Richard Leonard will hopefully reverse this slide.

That left us with a patchwork Tory Government that gives not a toss about the impact of UC on the thousands who will be affected.

SFTB very poignant post; I am sure most on here have encountered family members who have been impacted and affected by addiction: be it alcohol, drugs, gambling or any other.

The fact that you cousin has been released from his suffering may ease the pain to a degree, but I am sure that losing someone who had that impact in your early life cannot be easy.

  19. It’s poor that Sunday’s cup final will not be broadcast live on free to air TV. Our games administrators and the national broadcaster have once again shown scant regard to football fans. Time for a purge.

  20. From today’s Irish Times

Just when Mikael Lustig might have thought his footballing life couldn’t get much sweeter, him being one of the Swedes who qualified for the World Cup by ousting Italy last week, he’s now at the centre of a heated debate among Celtic fans over which is the superior tribute tune to the fella.

    The choices:

    (a) In honour of last season’s treble, to the tune of ABBA’s ‘Thank you for the music’:

“So I say thank you Mikael Lustig, this song we’re singing, thanks for all, the joy you’re bringing.

“Who could live without you, I ask in all honesty, what would life be, without a goal and a dance from our Swede?

“So I say… thank you Mikael Lustig, for winning us all three.”

    (b) To the tune of, eh, Atomic Kitten’s ‘Whole Again’:

“Looking back on when we first met, I cannot escape and I cannot forget,

Lustig, you’re the one, you still turn me on, you can make me whole again.”

  21. VFR800 is now a Monster 821 on

I have seen a few suggesting that we rest players for Sunday and put out an “under-strength” team. I wholeheartedly disagree.

I don’t expect to get anything from the game, BUT the experience of playing against top level players will make our players more game-intelligent, sharper and better overall. We strive to get to this level to play against the best players and teams that we can and every opportunity should be taken to learn.

Brown, Tierney, Sinclair, Boyata, Forrest, Dembele etc. will not be better on Sunday for a wee rest on Wednesday night!

  24. Scott Sinclair,s form worries me a bit . So far he has not hit the heights he did last season , but then neither has the team . Saturday was a good 3 points without playing anything near what this team is capable of producing , I hope it’s not to long until we see the super football of last season returning .

You are spot on , life changes often trigger loneliness the biggest issue in my opinion, from this people get isolated,it can lead to depression, they seek solace in some activity or chemical just to help them feel better at that time, this can often lead to dependency which grows and grows, no easy answer to this, personal support good non blaming advice are the start, it is very easy to try to block out emotional pain with chemicals and that can be the rocky road.

Our lives are littered with sadness. That’s why it’s so important to enjoy every minute that it’s possible to. None of us, thankfully, know what’s around the next corner.
