Rugby Park surfaces again

147

If you are feeling a bit anxious today but you’re not sure why, suppressed memories of Rugby Park could be filtering through your subconscious.  After 13 undefeated visits to Kilmarnock in the 8 years to 2018, Celtic have lost two of our three subsequent visits.  The only win came courtesy of a memorable last minute Scott Brown strike.

Much has changed in the 11 months since that win, including both team’s managers, but the plastic surface that Brendan Rodgers’ side found to challenging remains, a consideration for Neil Lennon tonight.

New Kilmarnock manager, Alex Dyer, watched his team beat Queens Park 6-0 in the Scottish Cup on Saturday, but his side’s league form is dreadful.  They played six league games in December without scoring a goal and earning only a single point.  If you thought Celtic needed the winter break, speak to a Kilmarnock fan.

Results, of course, do not tell the whole story.  Killie are not losing goals, in that December run only Livingston scored more than one against them.  At Ibrox, they held on until late in the game and gave the home team a fright.  They have kept 10 clean sheets in 13 home games since losing to Newco on the opening day of the season.  Tonight will be a real challenge.

    Bob loblaw,

So your suggesting that the Celtic legal team could have reviewed the document and did not get back to PL with their summary and recommendations?

  2. Looking forward to the first big match of the year and undoubtedly it will be Hoops up against a hyped up kilmarnock with Celts trying to negotiate through two banks of four and a keeper who hopefully does not have a blinder. Celtic will work hard and certainly create chances on the night but will have to make them count. Celtic have better players and if they follow the above they will win the match, simple as. Come on the Hoops.

Your possible explanation would require PL and ER to be totally in the dark on 5 Way contents and only allow up to 24hrs for a legal opinion to be given by someone also starting from scratch, who would then advise PL there was nothing to challenge so no need to reply and PL would accept the advice with no questions..

    Not plausible is it?

More plausible is both PL and ER knew the contents and had nothing to challenge so did not need to see the final draft agreement.

    Occams Razor.

  4. My view about our tactics is that we play in front of teams all the time – we get into positions on the flanks but don’t cross. We don’t fire balls across the area into the gap that defenders and keepers hate – we don’t need to hit the bye line just to get it fizzing past the fullback getting defenders facing their own net causes chaos. Instead we get there with our wide guys and we check back inside into traffic and persist with trying to play through the middle of packed defences.

Liverpool are amazing at it and watching MOTD on Sunday morning i reckon 70% of goals came from cross balls from 18-25 yards out – we turn back inside far too much – just sayin..

Bob Loblaw – Thank you for response.

IMHO, your theory is just as interesting and plausible as any other theory posted on here.

I’d respectfy challenge one point – I suspect the vast majority of posters on here (with notable, honourable exceptions) are no closer to the workings inside CP than you?

On this specific point, I understand the following. (Happy to be corrected)

    1) at the time Riley was our guy on SPFL board

    2) It has been widely reported that he was on holiday when this was cooked up

    3) Multiple drafts of 5WA exist.

Irrespective, the SPFL conjured up a generational game changer and gave decision makers ONE DAY to review and respond.

    A carve up.

    Hail hail

    Keep The Faith

  6. To be fair, Eddie is not a six yard striker. Griff is but has been missing almost all season. Get the fbs to the bye line and test the nerve of keeper and defenders. If it’s not working I’ll head for RP just after HT.😁

A lot of that is down to not having target men, or strikers as such.

No aerial threat, means we keep too many of the high baws low

    Its a simple game CSC

    spooks being razor clams

Last had frog legs out your way

Fizzing the ball low across the box can be a very effective weapon , However , you need at least one predator type striker with lightning anticipation which Eddy (for all his considerable qualities) is not.

    GDT,

Wasn’t that long ago the common impression of OE was that he could not lead the line because he’s no that kind of player, just saying like, be careful about saying IE is not that kind of player

  13. I hope Soro gets a game and he’s not another Bayo, Kouassi, Shved et al.

    We do have history………………………

    C’MON THE CELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. I think that all of us on here were assuming that Jozo would not feature tonight because of the artificial surface. So that’s the only concern for me. Had tonight’s game been on grass I’d have been delighted with the team and the (presumed) 3-5-2 formation, something I’ve been hoping for for some time.

My understanding is that Jozo CAN play fine on tonight’s surface but that it’s not too good for his legs! Maybe he’s taking one for the team ;-)

And maybe Jozo will be the recipient of some of your votes – thew polls will open around 9.40, cqnpoty@gmail.com

  15. I hear you but if they are told to expect it they should be in there – not only that but many an OG comes from such positions……….

    CANAMALAR

Eddy has the strength to hold off defenders and take the ball in . This is something he has added to his armoury in the last season or so . I’ve no doubt the young man has plenty further development in him , it’s all down to the coaching.

  17. Back to basics.

One of the popular misconceptions on social media is Eric Riley’s holiday.

He indeed was on holiday when an important decision was taken but that was in Feb 2013 when SPL Board were deciding whether or not to appeal the LNS Decision.

They didnt and Eric was not part of that decision which is lucky for him.

However as to his whereabouts on 26/27th July unless he was visiting the same place as in 2012 chances are the e mail arrived.

The thot plickens in that in 2014 Eric was delivered a copy of the HMRC documents of Feb 2011accusing RFC of negligent or fraudulent behaviour iro the WTC as an SPL Board member but with no apparent effect on Celtic’s position of “surprise”.

He was also reminded of 5 Way conditions at an SPFL Board meeting in Oct 2013 just before the Res12 AGM.

  18. Comfortable.

Killie haven’t threatened at all though a second goal early in the second half would be very welcome.

We’ve no scored more than three goals in ten games, it’s worrying innit
