Ruining young players

121

From the moment the team was announced, and we knew Ange was giving many from the second 11 a game, a positive result was always a tall ask. Still, the manager’s immediate objective was served: several fringe players experienced a thorough examination.

Yuki Kobayashi was caught in the headlights. His passing was erratic, he was behind the defensive line at the first goal and was outmuscled when allowing his opponent a header at the second. I have heard the same verdict on him repeatedly since full time.

The player is 22 years old. There is a reason he is at Celtic which was not evident on Saturday. He is not here because of his aerial dominance, or composure under pressure, but be clear, there are reasons, he was not randomly plucked from the other side of the globe.

When I was young and Jock Stein was doing his thing, Celtic fans believed their club knew how to develop young talent, whereas I repeatedly heard, “Rangers ruin young players.” This was almost certainly true, what else would explain two clubs fishing from much the same pond returning such dramatically different catches?

Success with a 22-year-old footballer, is not always finding the finished article (Virgil van Dijk was 21 when he arrived at Celtic and is a clear exception), it is more often how to build on the resources the player already has and turn him into the finished article.

If we throw a young player into an environment which they are clearly unprepared for, then dispose of him, we will ruin more talent than will survive to enhance the club’s reputation as an attractive destination.

Yuki is not ready for the physical side of the game, which might be something we can work on. We can certainly work on his composure. He has another four games this season then a summer to do upper body work. I have seen nothing to suggest he is a future star, but you and I really need to work on how we view player development.

On the result. If we sell Carter-Vickers, Kyogo, Johnston, Taylor and Maeda – and we sign no one – next season is going to be nip and tuck.

Also, on the Ibrox Third Goalkeeper Rule. If a defender’s hand or arm is on the ground when it collides with the ball inside the penalty box, no penalty is awarded. If the ball hits the outstretched hand of a falling defender inside the box, a penalty should be awarded. While he was falling and before he landed, Connor Goldson’s outstretched hand collided with the ball inside his penalty box. The referee – and more importantly VAR – declined to award a penalty, in clear contravention of the rules.

Football like life is progressing at such a rapid rate ….Athleticism, strength and power have become such a big requirement in modern football

We are severely lacking in many positions…we can gat away with it if the player is really good at his specific role ..Kyogo and Jota being examples

A Johnson has been a success because of the modern attributes he brings …CCV the same and Starfelt…not the most skillful…probably nowhere near as skillful as kobiashi….but he’s a tough quick Athletic player and good at defending… let’s see if Ange is as ruthless as they say !!!!

  2. the next game against them in the league will be at ibrox.

it has been the same pattern for ever.

the opposite sequence to the last season.

no conspiricy, just how it is.

  3. Kobayashi and Bernebai are Peter Lawwell signings.

Kyogo and CCV are Ange signings.

  4. Paul 67,

If we lose the players you mention in one foul swoop then it won’t be nip and tuck. It will be curtains.

    HH.

  5. If you are going to field three out of four fringe players in defence you have to protect them. The game screamed out for Tank but no start. What did we sign him for? They have been better in midfield in most games against us this season, this was a free hit so why not play the Japanese player of the year?

“If we sell Carter-Vickers, Kyogo, Johnston, Taylor and Maeda – and we sign no one – next season is going to be nip and tuck”

Fair enough Paul but please qualify the above by stating this won’t happen !!!

A few quivering “Awe Now, they’ll be good next season” type comments surfaced post match.

Those comments may very well turn out to be true by the way.

Worth considering though … And the following is genuinely NOT complacency ….

    Who has the better manager?

Whose squad building is further advanced?

Based on outcomes this season who has the better squad?

Who is facing squad integration challenges earlier due to European qualifiers?

Who has the greater financial stability?

Who has the greater accuracy of revenue projection next season?

  7. Not just the result but the performance was a kick in the Goolies last Saturday.

However we all know we are a lot better than we showed in the Derby.

A time for cool heads and a bit of calm.

We have 3 games & a Cup Final left, we have to negotiate those games with current Players.

I am expecting a major reaction from the players to restore the feel good factor.

However the real action that will define next Season will take place in the Boardroom.

I was brought up on the mantra that you build a team from the back, my opinion is we need a Keeper to challenge Hart not a bench warmer, we must retain CCV & Johnston & provide better cover for both,

We also badly need a midfield enforcer, a big physical Powerhouse who will kick the lard out of Cantwell.

We obviously need to offload a few , hopefully we don’t lose any of the likes of Jota or Kyogo but we have to be realistic these things could happen, if they do we need to buy very wisely.

First things first though we have a World Record Breaking Treble to complete.

Come on the Bhoys, finish Season in a Blaze of Glory.

Blimey what has happened – this site usually fills me with joy

    Today it seems suicidal

As they say in Eurovision song land – calm down lads calm down

Paul67 I think your assessment on our young Japanese Central Defender is a bit tough

We have had a settled back 4 most of the year – on Saturday only one played CS

Had Yuki played with AJ CCV and GT I think we would have seen a better performance

    The same up top

We have had a settled 3 Jota DM and Kyogo

We only had one of the three Jota the other 2 Oh and Abada have not featured

Of the 5 players that came in on Saturday I would not judge them in the team that played

If you assume our strongest 11 is

    JH

    AJ CCV CS GT

    RH CMcG MoR

    Jota Kyogo DM

Play Yuki in place of CS and I think you see a better performance from Yuki

The other factor about Saturday Abada was not match fit – he was way of the pace as you would expect

The team that played on Saturday had too many changes (I know some were necessary)

When we make too many changes we lose our rhythm

I think we did the same at Love Street

The 2 games we have lost this year both had 4 or 5 player changes

IMHO you can make one, max two changes to a settled side, when you make 4 or 5 it’s a risk

Or as I think is the case on Saturday and experiment

Hey Ho it did not matter

Chin boys we are about to win the treble

BTW just to finish my point

The team that plays in the Cup Final (injuries apart) picks itself and that’s what Ange will pick

There will be no experimenting at Hampden

  10. Yuki and OH are giants, physically in their own countries.

They are not as good against tall guys.

    FFS it’s not rocket science.

    TBB @ 12:58 ….

Bit harsh surely on Ange’s signing record?

Ideguchi didn’t make it and Bernabei has underwhelmed for sure.

    But the others.

Abildgaard failed to impress on loan full stop and was chased. Good.

Jenz didn’t impress on loan to the tune of a €5 million fee and was chased. Good.

Seigrist cost nothing costs not much.

(BTW – The only kind of signing I’d make purely off a track record in the SPFL – out of contract)

Haksabanovic came cheap relative to his potential and not too expensive relative to his track record.

In contrast to Yuki, we have registered her name as Yumi.

Good evening all from the Laurieston Bar. The owners have asked me to check the quality of the Guinness. An onerous task but I shall rise to the challenge.

  16. Some of our players need to take a long look at themselves and remind themselves who they were playing for. Giving less than 100% is not acceptable, especially when playing TheRangers.

Where was a Broony like fighting for every ball in every tackle?

Where was a Barry Robson type message from the kick off?

Where was a combative Neil Lennon ball winner?

We were passive at the start allowing them to impose their physicality on us.

It’s great playing silky, refined footballers, but they need to be given possession.

They also need protection and it does not come from the refereeing fraternity, so it needs to come from within the team.

In the absence of CCV and AJ no one was prepared to put their body on the line, not even AR.

All I want for summer is a strong ball winner who will not be brushed aside by aggressive agricultural huns who seem to have adopted the Ibrox “culture” and play to the baying hordes.

    Yes. I’m still hurting.

  17. Just saw “point to prove” Souttar’s goal on Rangers STV news. Stone-wall foul on Koboyashi. The five boys who played on Saturday, three have hardly started a game and two have been out for long periods. They weren’t the only poor performers on the day, for a match that even the supporters weren’t as Psyched up for had the league not been won last week. Better for them and us to experience the pain in a pretty meaningless game.

  18. GG – I agree and it has been apparent for a while that we need a midfielder who is more robust and dynamic than the current crop. I thought it might be Iwata? It certainly isn’t MoR or DT. Tidy footballers but they are not going to go in where it hurts when needed.

I would have preferred to start with Calmac, Reo and Iwata. If we are going to experiment at least try that trio rather than MoR who does not shine in these games.

I see very few other games from the SPFL if Celtic are not involved. I wonder if there are any standouts playing elsewhere that we could sign? I said on here a couple of seasons ago that we should sign Lewis Ferguson from Aberdeen. He’s played 30 games in serie A this season and now valued at around 9 million.

  19. Iwata was lost when he came on at Hampden.

He is not the physical powerhouse that we require in midfield.

He can play his part and can replace Callum when required .

We need to find another Victor Wanyama type.

  21. Talking of what is a ruin….

Next to the pundit pack, which the broadcasters serve up to us, the other carbunkle on scottish football’s arse is the awards brigade. All during the season some experts decide who is the best! We the fans know who it is! Best player/manager of the month crud…players chosen as the best of the season before the season is ended. A chance to mix with the beautiful people downtown at glittering bashes. Celtic were at it themselves the other night, slapping each other on the backs. We should do something more creative rather than catering to the awards brigade with their ideology of ONE being better than others. Primary school I went to never had prize ceremonies. The Headmistress banned them. Resources were used for better things.

For awards I mean all things Oscar, Emmy, Tony Grammy, Brits, BAFTA etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

    No awards brigade!

    No pundits!

  27. Ange- Manager of the year

    Kyogo- Player of the year

    Beale- Manager of the weekend?

    Cantwell- Player of the weekend?

Fair enough, sometimes they have a good day

  28. Enforcers, holding mid etc are not terms for a good quality central mid these days

We should never sign a Lennon (can’t attack , shoot,) , Brown( run around a lot, but not sure where), Rogic(super skills but knackered) again. Modern mids have energy, pace and at the top level; skill

Like it or not, Cantwell is a great signing for them

Ran us ragged in the semi but we slagged him after. Good player

I have loved McGregor since his debut but his pace is a downfall right now
