Ruining young players

121

From the moment the team was announced, and we knew Ange was giving many from the second 11 a game, a positive result was always a tall ask. Still, the manager’s immediate objective was served: several fringe players experienced a thorough examination.

Yuki Kobayashi was caught in the headlights. His passing was erratic, he was behind the defensive line at the first goal and was outmuscled when allowing his opponent a header at the second. I have heard the same verdict on him repeatedly since full time.

The player is 22 years old. There is a reason he is at Celtic which was not evident on Saturday. He is not here because of his aerial dominance, or composure under pressure, but be clear, there are reasons, he was not randomly plucked from the other side of the globe.

When I was young and Jock Stein was doing his thing, Celtic fans believed their club knew how to develop young talent, whereas I repeatedly heard, “Rangers ruin young players.” This was almost certainly true, what else would explain two clubs fishing from much the same pond returning such dramatically different catches?

Success with a 22-year-old footballer, is not always finding the finished article (Virgil van Dijk was 21 when he arrived at Celtic and is a clear exception), it is more often how to build on the resources the player already has and turn him into the finished article.

If we throw a young player into an environment which they are clearly unprepared for, then dispose of him, we will ruin more talent than will survive to enhance the club’s reputation as an attractive destination.

Yuki is not ready for the physical side of the game, which might be something we can work on. We can certainly work on his composure. He has another four games this season then a summer to do upper body work. I have seen nothing to suggest he is a future star, but you and I really need to work on how we view player development.

On the result. If we sell Carter-Vickers, Kyogo, Johnston, Taylor and Maeda – and we sign no one – next season is going to be nip and tuck.

Also, on the Ibrox Third Goalkeeper Rule. If a defender’s hand or arm is on the ground when it collides with the ball inside the penalty box, no penalty is awarded. If the ball hits the outstretched hand of a falling defender inside the box, a penalty should be awarded. While he was falling and before he landed, Connor Goldson’s outstretched hand collided with the ball inside his penalty box. The referee – and more importantly VAR – declined to award a penalty, in clear contravention of the rules.

Years ago, different rules. The ‘supporting arm’ thing is pretty new

  2. RobertTressell: there was a Robert Tressell festival here two weekends ago. It was organised by SIPTU (I think), Ireland’s largest trade union and held in Liberty Hall. There were debates, discussions and readings. I didn’t attend as I only found out about it the day before. It was the first time I had seen his name mentioned here.

Just thought you’d like to know.

  3. Of course we came close to ruining Kieran Tierney’s career. And though not a young player at the time, James Forrest too. KT was a fairly experienced player by then, Jamesy even more so.

Thing is both made the Celtic team when young players, but they were both run into the ground when they were carrying injuries, or ongoing medical conditions. Our manager knew better.

Just as well Partick Thistle had already copyrighted ‘The Jags’ otherwise we coulda used it.

  4. BRRB: they certainly did. 13 in a row now. Winning the All Ireland will be a tall order though.

Advertising in Dublin is hit and miss. Miss out of intellectual events but very aware of shite 80s bands playing in Naas😎

  6. “I also have two members of my team at the moment who are always glued to the TV at our training ground when Celtic play, in Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson. Virgil is an ex-Celtic player, of course, but Robbo is just a massive, massive Celtic fan. So I get to hear lots about Celtic. In Robbo’s case, he talks constantly about it, even when you don’t ask, and all I hear is that it is a special club that has a lot of heart and soul. So I’m really looking forward to getting my own experience of this.”

    Jurgen Klopp (Aug 2018)

“Celtic are a massive club and people underestimate them sometimes. It’s such a historic club and a great environment. The fans are outstanding, the stadium is amazing and to get Champions League in my first season there was great for my development.”

    Virgil Van Dijk (2019)

“People still underestimate how big Celtic are.”

    Virgil van Dijk (2021)

“What a club it is. European nights, the fans, the club, the way of living as a Celtic player & a Celtic fan. It’s just incredible.”

    Virgil van Dijk

“I really feel that my step to Celtic was something based on a feeling with the fans, the club, the community and that it really feels like it is a way of living at Celtic.”

Virgil van Dijk (The Scotsman 2022)

“After I made that steps. Being able to go from FC Groningen to Celtic was a big one because I played for one of the biggest clubs in the world that nobody really realises in my opinion. I didn’t realise much before I joined but when I joined it was unbelievable. Playing Champions League in my first season; Barcelona, AC Milan, played against Ajax the year after in the Europa League. I won two league trophies, I won the cup trophy so all these things and the experience made me ready for the Premier League. It was just the right path that I took and it definitely helped me and shaped me who I am today because as you know experience is such a big thing especially for defenders, for centre halves and I feel like it only makes you better.”

    Virgil van Dijk (Nov 2022)

  7. And of course it cannot be denied that if you have not had much game time when you come in it is not easy. Thought I heard that KT had only started a couple of EPL games since the turn of the year, but had been a second half substitute against Newcastle the week before and held up well. Less so against Brighton yesterday, struggled in the second half, and seemed to be in some discomfort later in the game. Hope I’m wrong on that front. Shane Duffy, remember him, was playing for Brighton.

The level of cheating on Saturday stretches way beyond the goldson handball. Can’t well fouled with impunity. Many of our attacks were stopped by a professional foul. Only lungestrum was booked for this. Mcgregor, for about the 5th time this season, was booked for his first foul.

Please stop trying to be positive about a Celtic team which is on the verge of winning 5 trophies out of 6 after a total rebuild.

Never mind that after winning the league we put out half a team to play in a meaningless match on Saturday.

There are folks who have been waiting for 2 years to have a real go and show how clever they are and that Ange isn’t really any good. Real experts who can seize their moment to say they told you so. The broken clock shows the right time twice every day.

I am just surprised all these duds we have in our books are not attributed to Peter Lawwell and his heated driveway.

Meanwhile in a parallel universe Rangers have won fk all again. 2 trophies out of 36 in 12 years. Ah yes it’s a shit league. So shit it is ranked in top 10 in Europe currently.

Brown( run around a lot, but not sure where),

Broony was a highly effective box to box midfielder. So effective he made over 600 appearances for us in 14 seasons at Celtic Park, winning 10 league titles.

As well as being a respected captain he epitomized the spirit of the club.

I’m sure you’d like to rethink your harsh judgement of Broony.

  12. carpe diem 63 on

Scott Brown would have easily taken care of Goldilocks on Saturday …C..twell is just another in their long list of “ hard men “ and rank average players who have benefited from and exploited to the full the cheating generosity of Scottish ( Anti Celtic ) officials

That team that’s one game away from a treble did not turn up on Saturday.

We’ve been praised all season for our strength from the bench. It wasn’t in evidence.

We aspire to be contenders in Europe. For that we need character all through the side.

Apart from CS no one stood out or stood up.

    We made heroes of hoodlums.

Handed Micky Mole a lifeline and his board a reason to move season tickets.

We have allowed a beaten bitter opponent to get off the floor.

Poor policy in any line of work.

No amount of excuses that it was a meaningless rubber can disguise the facts.

    Yes it still hurts.

  15. My friends in Celtic,

That was our first defeat under domestic VAR.

It happens. No big deal. We keep our eye on the prize on the 3rd June .

Then the biggest prize of all, right into the CL.

We have no entitlement to win every single game. We had questions that required answers in a hostile competitive atmosphere.

Ange would have learned more from an unfamiliar defeat . His rationale was sound.

    HH, the journey continues.

  17. I take it the points total, goals total to try and beat Brendans haul dizny coont noo, aye it wiz a dead rubber

    Guffaw guffaw guffaw…….

    Dearie dearie.

  18. The one, maybe the only advantage we have over our europen rivals is that our league isn’t particularly strong, so we should be in a position to rotate on a regular basis, at Celtic Park at least.

For me, we won the league on the 12th Nov when we went 9 points clear with victory over Ross County.

Ralston and Bernabie barely played a game since then. If we can’t give these lads some game time with a 9 point lead in our pockets then for me it’s fairly clear that the gaffer doesn’t rate them.

One long term injury to any of our back 4 and we’re in a lot of trouble next season. The cheque book needs to come out.

  19. Marspapa

Obviously these things don’t matter too much to Ange. Otherwise the man paid to be in charge would have picked a full team on Saturday and delayed CCV op etc.

  20. Marspapa

Of course these things do matter to you and me. That’s maybe the difference.

I do remember asking Brendan R why he hadn’t gone for the jugular at 5-0 and try to get the record of 8 against that lot when they had half an hour to do it. He just laughed and said are you fans never happy. We won the treble and beat them 5-0.

Managers have different goals aims targets etc. The pre season bragging cup, or end of season last 5 games trophy doesn’t matter so much to them it seems.

I didn’t see the game on Saturday due to family commitments but I’m pretty sure Ralston and Barnebei both started.

Maybe you were watching another game
