Scotland, consolable in defeat

473

I want Scotland to win at pretty much anything.  For me (fourth generation), this is my home and my country.  I also want Celtic players to be successful.  But the engagement with tonight’s qualifier against Serbia is not there.  If I’m really honest, my biggest wish is for Callum McGregor to have a midweek off.

Memories of the 1998 World Cup do not help.  Celtic contributed more players to that tournament than any other club in world football.  We paid a price the following season as exhaustion took its toll.  Do I really want Celtic players on international duty in throughout the summer, before another tortuous European qualification campaign?  Do you?  No need to pull that plaster off yet.

My country’s position on the international stage has always been viewed through pragmatism.  Will it hurt the poor, or the soon-to-be-poor (hmmm)?  Will it hurt what I really care about, like Celtic?

So good luck to them tonight, but if we are beaten by the better team, I will be consolable.

  1. I still want Scotland to do well. Clarke has done well so far making use of players at his disposal – horses for courses – nothing spectacular but any is result better than the SFA-McLeish debacle of the 3-0 drubbing from Kazakhstan.

MacGregor has had an up-and-down season so far whether it’s because of too many matches (I must have missed those matches when the season was called early) or because of lack of tactics (covering left midfield, left back, central defence, central midfield, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder, left winger…).

You used to get pelters on my old supporters bus if you were a ‘Tartan Tim’ but the reality is we need Scotland to do well for the olde coefficient !

People will not be allowed to drink alcohol on trains or at stations in Scotland from Monday, ScotRail has announced.

    ahh

so scotrail has jumped on the governments great covid alcohol red herring bandwagon

there are good arguments about whether scooping alcohol should be allowed at all on trains

but to imply that banning it now will have some sort of covid prevention outcome is completely disingenious

I don’t know enough about it to debate, however, I would trust the devil before I’d trust Hancock.

    _______________________________________________________

Not knowing enough is the crux of the matter. Unless we have trust and confidence in acknowledged ‘experts’ we may be prey to each and any plausible theory. Not saying that Mr Yeadon is necessarily wrong but his is just another voice.

  5. I’m desperate for Scotland to win tonight. I was at France 98 and Euro 96 and it was a brilliant experience (even the cat and mouse in London with the England hooligans)

I’ve never met a Scottish Celtic fan that didn’t support their own country. Huns used to make the accusation that we all supported Ireland but I assumed only a minority of fans with Irish parents followed Ireland

I still believe that , even though this site seems heavily on the ‘not bothered about Scotland’ fence

If God offered me 10 in a row or Scotland at Euro 2020, I would narrowly pick the latter.

Why? Because Celtic have every chance of doing the 10 with the resources available and don’t need divine intervention

Scotland need a chunk of luck with the quality we have

James Doleman – ‘it’s unlikely the full story will ever come out’.

This is exactly the reason behind my attempts to engage with my MSP, Rona McKie, to understand the process behind what it will take to petition for a public inquiry to the conduct of the Police and Prosecution Service. So far, Rona has not engaged directly with me but her office has been quite responsive and, latterly, helpful to help me understand the process.

Various voices (Nicola Sturgeon, Murdo Fraser, Kenny McAskill) have called for the need for an inquiry so , although low in numbers, there is a bit of cross party support already.

It is up to us to engage with our MSPs to ask their support for an inquiry when the current judicial process is concluded which will not be for some time yet so not much can be done apart from raise awareness (which which i will occasionally bore CQN) and don’t let the matter quietly die.

I haven’t supported Scotland in almost 60 years going to see Celtic and I was born here. Following in the footsteps of my father, I won’t be supporting them now either.

  10. I won’t be watching it either and if Scotland do not win (I never said humped) I too will be consolable.

“But VAR [video assistant referee] will be used, so the SEVCO players need to be wary that any subtle pushes and pulls in the penalty area will be detected and punished, unlike at home.”

I don`t think Coneybhoy lives in Scotland so that makes his statement less `questionable`.

it is only since returning to Scotland 13 years ago that I became , at best, ambivalent re the National side. Whilst in England, I was, although never a Tartan Army type, more of a `supporter`.

I went to a home international game, never again. Couldn’t give a rats ass what the outcome is.

It’s a fair point and maybe the subject didn’t come up enough but in my 24 years in Scotland it never happened. Even with guys who had Irish dads. I only see it online

i only moved to Ireland 12 years ago so Ernie’s point is fair; thanks anyway!

I too fell out with Scotland for a while (late 80s, with Mo Johnston abuse ironically; plus Kenny) but only stopped going to games, always supported

Like you HS , i got more patriotic in England (was there 15 years) and was in the TA etc. Loads of Scottish pals there who supported a load of different clubs.

For balance, I was accused of being partial at the Scotland v Switzerland game in 96 when i didn’t celebrate wildly at McCoists winner (or sing Super Ally). My excuse was him missing sitters in first half but it rang a bit hollow!!

  16. Wasn’t Kenny Dalglish about to break or equal the record no of consecutive caps when he was mysteriously dropped by Wullie Osmand?

Sorry but this is 100% at odds with supporting an investigation into the conduct of the Police and Criminal Prosecutors. Can you direct me to anywhere that he has called for compensation to Rangers (old or new)?

  18. I’d like Scotland to win, and for Steve Clarke to leave on a high note………..

  19. If the national team were playing oot the back I would sit in the front. Only seen them once and that was over here against Canada, place was full of Ulster Scots. When I enquired, quite politely, wtf they were doing there the response was along the lines of “plantation”

It was Fathers Day and the weans had bought me a white golf shirt with green piping and accompanying shorts. When they made comment about why I would wear green tae watch Scotland I responded with “its Alexandria I come fae no Athenry”. They effed off.

It’s wildly at odds with my own experience.

What i would say is that of those Celtic fans I know who do actively support Scotland the majority would not be of Irish Catholic heritage (an observation, not a criticism, and doesn’t make them better or worse Celtic fans).

Personally couldn’t care less about international football. It used to be interesting when it was one of the few times you could see foreign players in action, but that’s a long time ago.

I admit though I tend to support Wales and the All Blacks in rugby, but not for any kind of jingoistic reasons, it’s more to do with the role of the sport in those countries. Even that attatchment though is a hangover from a former era when it was an amateur sport.

What percentage of Celtic fans living in Scotland would you consider do not derive from an Irish lineage?

For what it’s worth, I’m kind of indifferent towards the SFA 11, but i’ll watch out of curiosity.
