Sectarian, racist, why not genocide too?

906

Not one of you will be surprised at reports this morning that Celtic escaped punishment for “sectarian chanting” when the club and its fans were not, and never have been, accused of sectarian behaviour.  Last month one Irish title suggested Celtic fans stood accused of racism before amending their online content to read sectarianism and eventually paying enough attention to zone in on “offensive chanting”.  If they’re going to make things up, I really would prefer they accused us of something a bit more original in Scottish football, like genocide.  Ironically it would be less offensive.

Celtic have been open to all since its inception and are supported by groups right across Scottish society in increasing numbers.  It’s the other lot, you know, them, who brought sectarian practices into the game.  From Neil McCallum, our first goal scorer, to Gary Hooper, our last, Celtic have never had this peculiar social deficiency.  Never.

The SPL decision not to act against Celtic, after a Strathclyde Police match commander complained, was assured, as Celtic could demonstrate they had previously taken action “all reasonably practicable steps” to prevent what the league called “chanting in support of the IRA”.  Both Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell have spoken in unequivocal terms on this subject in recent weeks.

The league goes on to say, “Such behaviour is unacceptable and unwelcome at SPL matches.”  All the league have done here is pitched the ball back into Celtic’s court to prevent a reoccurrence.  I don’t fancy that job.

Nike have a store in Khobar in Saudi Arabia, I didn’t once see a Celtic Shirt in it for 2 years. Every Club but us. Ridiculous, I did see Hoops tops in Saudi but they were replicas. The Saudis love their football, We should be selling our shirts there and if we are not the Club should be asking Nike why not.

  3. So Reamonn’s killer, a guy with previous, gets 19 years?

He’ll be 42 when he gets out (assuming he actually does 19 years!) which is still a relatively young age and with his whole life in front of him.

I despair at the sentencing in this country.

I suppose you know the myth that Socrates won the Siegerson cup while at UCD. Sadly, it is just a myth as the great man never even visited Ireland, let a lone studied here.

However, one time Liverpool player, Alonso did play a bit of GAA while holidaying in Meath as a teenager.

Unless I am mistaken the SNP will have enacted the current football related legislation before the Joint Action Group action plan has been implemented. That legislation will have primacy over anything agreed by the JAG, even if the SNP Justice Minister is party to it. However, the wording of, and the criterion applied by the SNP legislation, (especially if amendments are attached) are not the same as those of JAG. As I see it, the same behaviour could be viewed differently from an SNP perspective than from an SPL one, and if I am right a legal quagmire awaits.

Very well mate – thanks. Getting a wee bit concerned with the UK weather. Sailing to Portsmouth on Sunday overnight then driving up to Glasgow. That Doctor that condemned Biddy from flying has a lot to answer for: :-)

As a Blantyre Bhoy born and bred, I am disgusted at the sentence handed to Reamonn’s murderers. We knew the lad Smith would get a lesser sentence due to the lesser charge of culpable homicide, but Maxwell’s sentence of (a minimum of) 19 years truly beggars belief. As HeadTheBall said above, he’ll be out by the time he’s 42, when he will be allowed back into “normal” life. Utterly despicable. Blantyre, as a community, truly has become a lot closer since that tragic night – I hope we remain as close right up to the day comes in 19 years time, when Mr Maxwell attempts to restart his own life in our community. I for one, hope he never sets foot in our town again, along with his accomplice.

You got me thinking about the derby game on 28th and what could we do.

There was a great idea on refs whistles at Ibrox last year which never came to fruition, one for the 28th could be “Shine a Light on Sectarianism” Every fan is encouraged to take a bright torch and as soon as the huns start with their vile bile, the torches are switched on, along with the normal singing/booing/whistling of their sectarian bile.

Imagine 50k bright torches – what an effect that would be!

Another absurd idea, I know – but it’s an idea nonetheless ;-)

Reamonn Gormley’s murder ‘devastated’ his community

The death of 19-year-old Reamonn Gormley deeply affected the Lanarkshire community of Blantyre, with hundreds attending his funeral at the town’s Roman Catholic church.

Father Brian Lamb, the priest who conducted the service after the teenager was stabbed to death in February, said that was some comfort for his family – even though the effect of Reamonn’s murder is always with them.

“Devastation is the only word I could use, and his family will never be the same again,” he said.

“His family will never forget the events of that night. They’ve got good family, good community support.

“However they’ll not wake up from the nightmare.”

Within a few days of his murder a walk was organised to commemorate Reamonn life and express the community’s revulsion of knife crime.

More than 2,000 people took part, and the organisers have capitalised on the strength of feeling to form the anti-knife crime group Campaign for Change.

The man behind the march, John Tierney, said they were determined not to lose momentum.

“We never anticipated how many people were going to be involved. We thought we had to kick on from that, we didn’t want our action to end with the walk itself,” he said.

“I think it showed a bit of solidarity, and that we were united as a community.

“If ever we feel we are waning on motivation, all we need to do is look back on that day, and look back at the charity work that Reamonn Gormley has done, and that’s where we take our inspiration from.”

The devastation was felt at the other side of the world too; in Thailand where Reamonn had taught English in a primary school, one of the few in the country to accept pupils with Downs Syndrome.

Paul Lennon, head teacher at the Good Child Foundation, said Reamonn was an inspirational figure, loved by the whole community.

“Children in tears everywhere, even now, all this time later,” he remembered.

“Not just the school, the whole village. Old ladies in the market and the young children at the school.

“Everybody was heart-broken. Reamonn was really well-liked and everyone was looking forward to the time that he would come back to us.”

I think a better idea would be for 50k people to get their phones out and record them.

Get them on YouTube under the same heading ‘Scotland’s Shame’.

Hopefully we will be 5-0 up at half time and they will indulge in the usual battling amongst themselves.

On another note, I expect us to be top of the league before we play them.

Thats disgusting and heartbreaking for Reamons family and the kids in Thia. These two sewer rats had a lot of previous and shouldnt even been on the street to murder a gem of a Bhoy that any mother and father would be proud of.

  18. BlantyreKev - Hail Hail to the Kano Foundation on

An utterly tragic event Giggsybhoy. Only thing I would say is that the ‘minimum of’ was important. Given the practice of release after one third of jail terms it at least serves as a minimum and prevents further injustice. He will have spent almost half his life and the vast majority of his adult life in jail by then, that’s if he is deemed fit for release, or survives the 19 years. Any future quality of life and future life chances will have been hugely eroded too. No outcome would ever have made things right to be honest.

Good afternoon to the Celtic Family from a very stormy Central Scotland. I think January is going to be a very interesting time for Celtic if the media are to be believed. We are likely to lose at least a couple of players in the transfer window now I would rather that this does not happen and we continue to build and improve our young side. However,if we have to sell a couple of our quality youngsters we must ensure who ever is buying them pays top Dollar I think the most likely to move on are Matthews and Kayal but I would like to see us getting 15 Million for the pair and some of that money being given to Lennie to improve the team.H.H.
