SFL, Hearts and the cash cow

790

With former Rangers International director, Charles Green, no longer on the scene, Scottish Football League chief executive, David Longmuir, has had a sudden change of heart. After encouraging member clubs to reject the SPL proposal to merge leagues, yesterday he congratulated clubs who voted for the merger as “reluctant heroes”.

SFL president, Jim Ballantyne, was less pragmatic, “We are joining their [SPL] company, their organisation.  They have swallowed us up. We could use nice words about it, but it is a takeover.”

On this occasion, we concur with Mr Ballantyne, who went on to say, “It will be for others to decide if this step takes us to where we want to go.”

The truth is that while this arrangement will do lots for clubs in the second tier of the game it will fundamentally change nothing, our challenges remain.

News this morning of impending financial doom at Hearts as a result of their lender and major shareholder going into liquidation presents another challenge.  Hearts over-reached what looked like a bizarre attempt to spend money like there was no tomorrow.  Memories of Zadoc the Priest blasting over the PA system at Tynecastle heralding their access to the Champions League qualifiers in 2006 will seem hollow now.

Scottish football has one perfectly solvent cash cow and nearly 40 businesses teetering on the brink.  Send the cash cow off to graze in pastures where it can be fattened in return for writing a cheque big enough to solve the game’s problems.

Willie Wallace will be at the Celtic Store, Argyle St, for late night shopping, from 5.30-7.30 pm tonight (Thursday).  Where you can buy a signed copy of his book and have a chat with the man himself.  Bring a camera.

Immediately after leaving the Celtic Store Willie and Brogan Rogan (and a pile of books) are heading to the Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club for a CQN Question and Answer evening.  Entry costs £2 (all of which is going to our charity causes).  DON’T FORGET YOUR CAMERA!!

Raffle tickets for this fabulous signed Celtic strip cost only £1, you’ve two days left to get a ticket, so fill your boots here.

Tomorrow, while some of us are relaxing in Fife, over a hundred Celtic fans will drive north ahead of a 1254125 Ben Nevis climb and Huddle. Two of our own are then cycling from Fort William back to Glasgow on Sunday…. They need sponsors for their 1254125 campaign. Even if you can’t make it up Ben Nevis you can help out here.

And, if your stuck in Lanarkshire tomorrow there’s a trivia quiz in aid of the Walk Centre, Nakuru, Kenyan, who help children and families of the slum. Quiz takes place at St John The Baptist Church Hall, Uddingston, 7.30 – 11.30.

    ……..

Not from me, until that shower financially, morally and spiritually expire then I’m still raging at the likes of O’Gilvie as head of the sfa, why do I bother?

In spite of the corruption Scottish football supporters are better than those who corrupted our game, I want to be here when we kick those self serving clowns into touch.

    Good Morning,

Can I just say what an honour and a privilege it was to be asked to the Greenock Celtic supporters club last night.

Apart from the fact that I got to meet so many supporters and CQN’ers who came from all over to the event, it is simply fantastic to see a vibrant club doing what Celtic is truly all about.

Meeting, socialising, having a laugh and raising some money for charity to help the plight of others.

The welcome was fantastic and greatly appreciated by yours truly and no doubt by the small bespectacled fellow that used to play for the club as well.

Great thanks has to go to The Winning Captain who organised the books and the signings– he really does a power of work.

A big shout to all those who came to The Celtic shop in Argyle Street as well. Yet again Pat Woods came in to more than say hello, Jeanette Findlay and Eddie Toner, our own lurking John of comedy fame, Mr Mooney from Clydebank, and especially Peter O’Donovan who now resides near Brisbane but who is back home visiting Paisley and who I hadn’t seen in close to 30 years.

It was great to see you all.

However, special mention has to go to the incredible Mr Wallace who left Greenock at around 10:45pm and had a fair old drive in front of him.

I won’t spoil it for any of the golfers today, but one or two of the answers he gave to questions last night were quite astonishing, and as someone who has spent quite a wee bit of time with Willie over the past few weeks, including the drive down to Greenock last night, he never ceases to amaze.

His heartfelt, honest and very astute observations on current Scottish Football came as a bolt from the blue and one comment in particular was so blunt that it drew an intake of breath from the audience!

However, I hope everyone present saw his great sense of humour and his absolutely honest appreciation of what he describes himself as “just a great life”!

As I say, thanks to everyone in Greenock for the welcome and coming to say hello– it was a joy to be there.

    Thanks.

  7. Good luck to all the shankers at Aberdour today.;-)

    Fore it’s a grand old team……..

  8. What a night it was in Greenock. Thanks to Willie and BRTH for their wonderful contributions. Thanks also to Vmhan for introducing me to other CQNers. In those few moments together it was possible to appreciate what our club and those who have played for it means to all of us.

Thanks also to those who gave me a lift home. I hope Hamiltontim, who now appreciates what Greenock is really like, managed to get safely through the Port.

Thanks also to Greenock CSC for such a great evening.

    Good morning CQNers

Best wishes to everyone at Aberdour today and if I may I’d like to pass on the best piece of golf advice I’ve ever received……you can never swing a golf club too slowly.

  12. The Stone Roses Aberdour Massive are out in effect.

I hope the sclaffbawers have a great day and that the Sun shines not only on Leith but also Keith and every other.

I think because we dinnae talk enough aboot Celtic (unbelievable coming from moi as well) that the Heavens are just gonnae rain on our “parades” a wee bittie this weekend. That is just me moonhowling harder than normal. ;))

Hatred is not taught in School, it is engendered at a very early age in the home, unfortunately.

  13. I’m too lazy to read back, but I’m sure there may have been some comments on the ‘sale’ of 785k of shares in RFC yesterday.

I put sale in quotes because it may have been a buy. Most services look at a trade and compare it against the current price – if it’s lower they assume it’s a sale, if it’s higher they assume it’s a buy but it’s not conclusive proof either way.

It’s simply reported as an ordinary trade on the official london stock exchange site.

Only years later did I realise how sexist & anti Tim it was …..

Needless to say I resigned there rather pronto..

  17. Groupon doing a turntable for all you vinyl bhoys…£29 99 reduced from £89.99.

  18. Good to see Celtic doing theior business early for the manager before pre season starts. 3 CL qualifiers on horizon , players in to take us back to the promise land.

I see Scoot Parker and Jermain Defoe have been made available for transfer. Always liked Parker.

Defoe might be worth a punt to replace Hooper. Gets you goals !!

  19. Ooops a bit premature with the Nelson condolences, hopefully it’s a while before I have to say that again.

dbbia, read on here the MBB who bought the shares is a good catholic boy, they’ll love that :o)

Does Bourne know there’s a car park at Aberdour?

There’s bound to be an Astra with a spare wing mirror.

  21. Wgs.

Defoe will be looking for minimum £50k a week I would quess.

MrsBT asked me yesterday who Damien Francis was. Seemingly he was buying a home for over £1m… overpaid numpties..

  22. Blantyre,

Sure PL would knock him into shape. Medals and CL or cash and nothing to show. He’s 30 now. All his big money transfers should have made him enoough money by now.

This is when i say to myself. Players motivation comes into it now.

Aye fine i can see why some players are securing their future with cash. But how much money does one person want.

For me if your a player like Defoe now i’d be looking to get medals and sample CL football and travelling to top grounds in europw now.

Then again he might not want that and happy playing for the like of Stoke etc getting the same dough.

  23. Congrats to Aiden Mc.Geady and his new wife on their Wedding Day.

Good luck also to the unofficial landscape gardeners at Aberdour.

    Remember to replace the divits.

    Welcome to Balde the Bold.
