Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

My argument there was to BT’s point not to yourself and I was not even accusing BT of holding that view.

I gave an illustration of contrasting transfer trading approaches to colour the argument. I made no accusation that anyone held to a view on them.

I do fervently believe though that the support will not be satisfied with one big transfer buy, especialy if they turn out to be more like JVOH than Larsson.

  2. Press Association reports say “senior sources” at Barcelona confirm that Cesc Fabregas in advanced talks with Celtic FC with a view to a 50 million euro cash/player deal with Beram Kayal heading for the Camp Nou

  3. Reuters reporting that 40 million euro-rated Hulk due to finalise sensational switch to Celtic with James Forrest going in the opposite direction

  4. SFTB – I dont agree – I think we should be entitled to expect a striker that can score a goals or at the very least we should have kept Hooper until after the CL qualifier. I would be happy with that but we have absolutely blown it.

We must start at a fast pace on Wednesday and get an early goal to put them into a panic mode. Surprised by all the good comments with regards to Frazer forster, my own opinion is for a goalkeeper of is size. he should be dominating is area coming for crosses, and is kicking is not good when clearing the ball from pass backs. Izzy is a poor defender and poor reader of the game and most goals conceded are down is side.

On the positive side we can beat these Kazacs and progress to next round.

Doesn’t bother me how many huns turn up in Karagandy colours. I freely admit to rooting for ANY team the huns come up against, even their wee cousins fae Gorgie.

Anyway, as the old saying goes, they might as well get hung for a sheep as a goat.

If there is even the slightest risk that followers of dead club are to mingle with the khazakstani fans then the Foreign Office should issue an urgent travel alert and advise all Khazakstanis to ensure their vaccinations are up to date, there’s no telling what can be caught from a zombie.

No way should we be letting Forster leave. His form has dipped somewhat lately but overall he’s been fantastic and will only get better with the right coaching.

Zaluska is nowhere near as good a keeper.

I know exactly where you are coming from – however, those fans you refer to, would they turn up for the Champions league matches if we qualify but don’t spend any cash?

My guess is that, yes, they would – if they REALLY had a point to make they wouldn’t attend either. Hence my comment about the elitist attitude of some fans regarding European football.

Boycotting the Europa League, if that is what it is to be, would be counter productive.

  16. Agree Provan was good against Tirana.

But his best ever game in a Celtic shirt for me was home to Motherwell on 17.08.1985. He was magic that day and Im sure anyone at that game would agree.

  19. Dexter, many Zenit St P fans would happily send Hulk to Celtic Park! Zhirkov is the main man there. A Russian social website states that he is a tim. Somehow I think a Russian tim tampered with it!

Another thing to factor in when considering Teemu Pukki is that in the past two seasons he has had Jan Klass Huntelaar and Raul ahead of him in the pecking order at Schalke and still had a better goals per minute ratio than those two superstars.

Celtic have an ambition of being debt free. It removes any worry from the bored as can be seen by how quickly we moved to sell in the transfer market. In the great scheme of things two EPL games carries more financial clobber than three pre qaulification ties.

So we are not prepared to financially gamble ať that level of the game within Europe. Thats where we are at. Which I believe to be our strategy. Our only one as MON, WGS and Neil will testify too.

There is a thread on another Celtic fans forum that is an utter disgrace.
