Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

If we were 2-0 up from the home leg against Shaktar I am fairly sure we would be confident that we could win the tie. So it is understandable that they are making confident noises however,in this case I hope there confidence is there undoing. H.H.

This will have been covered before but I like your penalty prediction Paul.

3-0 up from the first leg in the last round Shakhter went 3 down in half an hour in the return, 2 of which were penalties. They pulled one back before half time and then a 2nd in the 2nd half against the Albanian Champions, Skenderbeu Korce, who were playing only there 4th European tie, in a stadium with a capacity of 12,000 that had only 2,500 in attendance.

Of course we have a chance. And if they finish with 11 on the park I’ll twerk my way home to Blantyre.

  4. The Partizan Tirana game, was the biggest match I had been to up that point, as a 13 year old.

Wonderful recalling that night, official attendance of 51,000, but offcourse there was more.

Hopeless optimism of us Celtic fans believing , yes we can win the big cup again.

5 headed goals , I think, all scored by Celtic players, with one of those near famous sieve moment own goals.

Actually over 2 seasons Pukki’s record is a goal every 136 minutes in the Bundesliga.

Gary Hooper has a record of a goal every 121 minutes for all his time in Scotland.

The player a lot would like (Finnbogasson) has a goal every 102 minutes in the Eredivisie.

I would not worry about Glasgow based club fans wearing orange and sitting with Shakhter fans.

Actually, Baurzhan Abdishev issued official law saying that all those who will wear orange on Wednesday in Glasgow will come back to Kazakhstan as citizens of his country.

Could someone order more these orange shirts and give them for free?

Although the first leg didnt go our way we’re probably still looking at a 50-50 chance of progression – however we haven’t really looked like dishing out a gubbing to anyone despite our high level of possession in the competitive matches so far, so wouldn’t put our chances any higher than that.

I’m fairly confident as long as we don’t concede, might need extra time but we will get at them and hopefully make it one of the nights to remember.

If not, the inevitable fallout will occur and questions will be asked(and rightly so) regarding the sale of Hooper specifically, however if it is to be the Europa League for us this season I hope we can live up to our tag of ‘great fans’ by turning up and ditching the elitist attitude that some of these ‘great fans’ seem to have ie. the ones who seem to appear out of thin air when we play Barcelona but would be nowhere to be seen when it was Udinese, Athletico Madrid and Rennes.

  13. I read with interest Michael Grant’s piece in the Herald and Phil01’s follow up.

Both are an exercise in missing the point. There is no one philospohy or strategy that needs to be followed but it is viewed as common sense to build from a position of strength not fritter it away and cross your fingers and hope for good luck.

I found it fascinating that Grant uses the same points (language even) that our host has used.

Consider your expectations as being firmly managed.

Regardless of what I think the impact on Celtic for non qualification will be near catestrophic and the support adopts a “you wont spend so neither will I approach” – it will take years to rebuild the lost trust.

  14. I see the season before last young Teemu was only 122 minute per goal in the old Bundesliga. In the SPHell that season Hooper was 119 minutes per goal.

For HJK the season before that he was 104 minutes per goal in the league. That season Hooper was 106 minutes per goal for us.

Hooper’s stats in the Championship the season before coming to us were 144 minutes per goal.

On that basis I’d say Pukki looks like he could offer more. (risks neck on line)

  15. traditionalist1888 – elitist approach – naw – more like a get stuffed to the Board. Its got nothing to do with being sniffy at the Europa and everything to do with not being taken for mugs.

  16. Hi Paul67,

More Mr Kumykov mind games by the sound of it, some fighting talk after his more humble “We’ll be just glad to get UEL Football before the first leg.

Still I hope there above mixing it up and making the game into a farcical battle, there have been a few of those at Parkhead.

Went to the Tirana game with my wee Cuz, we were up from England and stayed with my big Cuz, who was at University in Glasgow.

The disapointment and anger I personally felt last week has gone, now it’s time to bring the thunder and get tore into them from the start. A million times better teams have melted in the furnace of CP on european nights & Celtic always respond well when our backs are to the wall and the hacks are slavering at the thought of doing a job on us, they should know better by now!! I feel one of those special nights under the floodlights coming on..

As I pointed out IF it wasn’t to go our way on Wednesday the inevitable fallout will occur but I don’t think us not turning up is a viable solution unless of course you want the purse strings to tighten further.

    Back into the fray

“I found it fascinating that Grant uses the same points (language even) that our host has used.”

There is at least an inference there that either PL is working Paul67 and Michael Grant from the back, or that Paul67 writes Michael Grant’s copy.

A more likely explanation is that Mr. Grant is a lazy and unoriginal journo who has copied some of the arguments he has read online. Today’s piece is unusually readable by the standards of Mr. Grant, who is normally unreadable and a great advocate of the Sevco Lives Fallacy.

Both Paul67 and myself and all other posters are expressing our own opinions, no matter how much they depart from yours.

We are not being brainwashed by PL any more than you are by Hugh Keevins, whose calls for Celtic to spend big, resemble your own.

See how easy it is to mistake similarity for uniformity and to fail to discriminate between seperately derived concordance of opinion with brainwashed acceptance by dictat.
