Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

    Cheers!

I’d like to see the lad get a run.

He could be the missing piece of the jigsaw.

I am sure you do not suffer from blind disbelief.

My point was made too obtusely.

The people who hold views with which you disagree are not any more blind and unquestioning than you and the people who agree with you are.

They have sighted belief and you have sighted disbelief. Calling either side blind is just using a pejorative term to undermine a position.

It’s a Kojo style- you avoid the direct ad hominem attack by using pejorative adjectives and adverbs to label the opposing view.

“its not a question of being given the financial backing,we have tried to get players in and come up against a brick wall and we’re still actively looking to bring in players in regardless of whether we gp through this tie or not..its not as if the board havnt backed us,its been frustrating that we’ve not got the players we wanted in” h.h

Blind belief/disbeleif is one thing. Spouting conjecture as fact is what gets me.

Maybe those who have so little faith in our custodians can ask CF to publish the board (bored haha) meeting minutes at Celtic FC to back up their “theories”.

    SFTB,

So good to have you back..

Your clarity of thought and expression has been sorely missed.

Perhaps if you had been in attendance over the last few months, the blog would not have degenerated to the levels to which it has sunk.

  8. Hi Bhoys When this transfer window shuts.and if we sign players or not,Lawell, and Lennons time is up at Celtic Football Club.,and that’s my opinion,

  9. 67 European Cup Winners @10-43,

Thanks very much for your advice and so quickly, I’ve forwarded it onto my son so will now wait and see. Will also depend on what time I get to his and he mentioned he, like his mates, favours Arsenal now! One lost I’m afraid, too long away at an early age!!

I hope we play well and of course go through but the last 2 games I watched ,the away game and Elfsborg were as poor as I can remember lacking skill and teamwork.

    Thanks again,

  10. Anyone think that Kayal isn’t actually injured? If he is he should get a hefty slap on the wrists for his tweet.

In a match this important the opposition should be getting as little as possible information about injuries as possible. If players are tweeting their (un)availability it gives a tactical advantage to the opposition.

  11. Fraser Forster is not a good goalie and neither is he a good shot stopper as he loses goals to his near post that a decent keeper would save. He also causes panic in the defence because of his hesitation to come off his line. He had a couple of decent games last year and he is kidding himself on if he thinks he has a chance of playing for England. The hierarchy there have had a good look and they prefer a 20 year old boy to him. Take the money as there are much better keepers to be had for a fraction of what we will

    get for him.
