Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

  1. Would love to see a left back signed before the window closes,Competition is good for all areas,we could even move Izzy up to midfield.

Running with one left back is no use.

That sounds well but I have heard it all before. 5 year business plans, lennoxtown, strategies, marquee signings etc., buying young selling on. Its all spin as far as I am concerned thats not to say your sterling ideas should not be pursued.

Whereas the policy is clear to see. Bring in a coach 4-5 years Gather momentum. Cash in. Start again. Everything else is made up on the hoof but spin it as policy.

Russell was a bit of mystery to me. Ticked all the boxes. I assumed we had someone else lined up. He should have been bought in January and Russell had made up his mind to go South.

It would have been ideal to have him in then and he would have been up and running by now.

It’s my opinion that a lot of deals are on the verge of going through across Europe but teams have to make sure they get their top target. Considering the money in the English game the amount of money spent this season has been low. They are all waiting for the big deal to go through and it will kick off a frenzy of activity that will filter through Europe. I reckon Celtic will make their moves once this has happened and also once we have secured CL football.

It’s just my opinion. I have been wrong many times in the past. I may well be wrong again.

    Magical memory.

    Many thanks

I think this was BBC Radio following their normal and still current process, in England anyway, of changing the commentators midway though the half so Brian Moore replaces David Francey at the mike. So don’t think there was anything sinister here.

Francey corrected Moore to tell him Stevie got the last touch on Murdy’s shot…..

  7. I posted at the weekend that I’d heard from a mate, I know, I know, that Boerrigter is out long term.

    Hope he is wrong.

  8. Brogan….

I enjoy your posts but unfortunately I cannot foresee Celtic ever getting close to the CL final. Certainly not until there is an overall restructuring of European football. I think the club have bought some good young players in but we will get 2 years max before they opt for more money in the EPL or even Championship.

  9. Great interview going on with Harry Greig on Talksport by Colin Murray.

Harry opened up the interview quoting the ‘Jonny Thomson’ song/ poem and how he carried a copy of it around in his wallet for years.

Will probably be on iplayer – well worth a listen.

  10. Wee Izzy sure is a scapegoat these days

The midfield three of Mulgrew, Brown and Ledley looked static and completely out of ideas against ICT (though I wouldn’t be suprised if Brown was tired)

Rogic in the creative role struggled to get the ball out of his feet

Strikers struggled to get into the game and didn’t look like they had played together much. No chemistry (I thought they both tried hard enough)

The fullbacks were definitely our most positive players going forward. Izzy in particular put a lot of crosses in (some good, some bad). He managed to find Charlie in space for him to scuff in the first goal. He put some other decent crosses in but Balde looked flat footed, Watt drifted wide and nobody attempted the back post run until Lustig came on.

I suspect Izzy and Matthews will have a big part to play against Shakter

  11. I love Celtic as much now as I ever have.In my younger days my love was more vivid and vociferous whereas nowadays I have a quieter approach and don’t sense armageddon when we lose a match.Sometimes we have to take a step back from the frontline to get a better view of how things really are.

I think what i’m trying to say is that come thursday morning our family, friends, neighbours, colleagues etc. etc. will still need us and all we bring to their lives, regardless of the result. The world will still spin. So,take it easy everyone and enjoy the game, after all, that’s all it is.

As for the other mob,i’m all for ignoring them. They are an unattractive specimen that has become tedious.

4-0 for our bhoys tomorrow night.

Also fully expect to se Guidetti (on loan..MC will want to see how he performs in CL), Pukki, a midfield maestro and possibly a tallbhoy CB.

Isn’t blind obeindence an extreme Hunnish trait! As a confirmed fence sitter however with a tendency to lean towards ‘i think the board are telling porkies’ side of the green fence i doubt if anyone on here criticising the board could be considered Huns. Few Huns ever questioned the leadership of the dead club and history seems to be repeating itself as few Zombies ask questions of the Sevco FC board either. A few no surrenders from their new Furher or the promise of an Orange strip and they are all happy wee zombies. Now we Celts , in general, seem to be somewhat more cynical and questioning which is an extremely healthy trait I believe . Doesn’t mean that anti board brigade are right but at the same time it doesn’t mean that some of the issues they raise are wrong.

I would recommend the Wimbledon csc that meet up at the Irish centre on hartfield road in Wimbledon.

Wimbledon is about a ten minute car journey from carshalton.

I drive through Sutton every day so could pick you up. You’d have to get a joe maxi or bus back home though. Good tims and half time pies.

  18. May I congratulate BRTH on a few excellent well reasoned posts this morning. His passion and love for the Club comes through as well as an astute assessment of where we are and where we can go from here. I also understand the frustrations of posters like Aw Naw, Sydney Tim etc. but I will suspend judgement till the transfer window closes, its just a few days now, then we will know if its Champions League or Europa and who we have brought in.

In the short term I would appeal to posters to put any differences aside and just lets concentrate on the build up and the big game tomorrow night.

  19. Two-nil puts us back in the frame, even if it just buys us an extra thirty minutes to get the winner or a shot at glory in a penalty shoot-out.

Can Celtic beat Shakhter Karagandy 2-0 at Celtic Park over 90 minutes?

About thirty years ago, successive announcements from government led to a default position of not believing a word anymore.

Not without further investigation, much of which reinforced that default position.

Blind disbelief is not a mindset with which I want to associate announcements from Celtic.

But by their actions and words that is now the case.

Sad and unnecessary. But not the fault of those asking the questions.

We WANT to be able to believe every word that comes from the club. But that is not possible.

I think Lenny said in interview that Derk was back in training and in contention for a place tomorrow night. However Commons appears very doubtful.
