Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

  1. Hi just moved to Dubai, desertbhoy can you tell me where the best place to watch the match is please. Many Thanks

  2. My biggest fear about tomorrow nite is what do we do when it gets to 3-0. I’m hoping its late enough on in the game that the Kahzacs have fallen asleep.

Ogilivie and his Masonic cabal will never be dislodged but Eric Riley of Celtic is in there. I want a clear, unequivocal statement from the SPFL that the newest full member is in fact a new club before they reappear in the SPL, history intact. We should demand the answer from Ogilvie, no chance of a reply, but Riley should.

I understand that the Scottish Government are flying in a medical specialist from Germany to allow her to have treatment in this country to save her life. Now that makes me happy.

BRTH-perhaps the petition has already started to make an impact. Well done on getting this off the ground and I hope that this forces the country into treating all these kids.

Peter Lawwell’s job is to meet the targets set to him by the board. He is not a decision maker. He is employed in a job to run the club on the instruction of the board members. The way I see it he has his hands tied as much as the manager.

I think it is a complete waste of energy to moan about PL. If you have any complaints about the way the club is run it should be directed at the board.

I guess I have an old way school of thinking. I don’t like to criticise the manager or any other member of the club. I do get tired about the same old moaning about PL tho.

The guy is an employee and his employers appear to think he is doing a grand job.

    Oh Dear,

CQN is indeed a very strange place these days.

    Michael Collins/Awe Naw

Both of you allude to PR spin emanating from the board re the comments about players delaying and so on.

Fair enough– believe what you want based on what you want.

If you have read my few posts over the last few days you will realise that I have been critical of whoever is in charge of signings at Celtic as I genuinely don’t think that it is good management to have sold some of your best players ( assets ) and gone into the most important games of the season without replacing them or strengthening the team to the extent that you give the manager the “best possible” chance of qualifying for the biggest tournament and the one that brings the most lucrative financial rewards.

By any standards– even just a financial one— that is not best management practice in my humble opinion.

However, the moment you report– and note the word report because that is all that is happening here— that a 3rd party with a degree of knowledge says that there have been attempts to sign players but that the players themselves have stalled or are waiting to see what else develops — then that report amounts to PL spin, board spin, or going to any lengths to protect the PLC!

Now just how can that be?

For a start, if they have tried to sign players and failed for whatever reason, it does not take away from the fact that Celtic still have to deal with the situation and in turn have to change their negotiating tactics in my opinion. They must be more alert to the tactics being used by agents and players– where ther might just be a tendency to treat Celtic like a teenager—- yes you are a big boy but not an adult– yet!.

Not only that, UEFA might just need to look at what is happening, as the whole concept of the transfer window may well be about to come under deep scrutiny– both by way of legal challenge ( what right does any organisation have to stop someone changing employers when they want especially if the parties agree a severance package with the existing employer )– and by the practices of the players themselves.

FFP works on more than just the clubs and players and their unions are looking at what exactly is “fair”.

What I was reporting was the fact that football negotiations are changing rapidly– at times from month to month– and that I was told that Celtic have been caught up in this despite their best attempts to sign players. Other richer clubs in better leagues are less affected as they offer greater rewards then Celtic in terms of commercial endorsements, media rights and so on.

Now, let me go a bit further.

One of the people who told me that he believes Peter Lawell has not skimped on transfer budgets or in attempts to sign players, has no reason to act as a spin doctor for the CEO. In fact, the situation is quite the opposite as the same person has told me in the past ( long ago and in relation to other matters ) that they are not a fan of Peter Lawell at all– don’t like his management style, don’t agree with his past actions or his negotiating practices etc, and that while the CEO might be recognised as doing a good job in parts, the person concerned makes it very plain that PL is far from being his cup of tea!

Now quite why this person should suddenly stump up some spin and PR for PL is beyond me altogether — and in any event, even if it was spin ( which I don’t believe it was for a second ) simply reporting the conversation on here is a million miles away from bending over backwards to protect the PLC.

It is no more than the reporting of a conversation from someone involved in football– I suspect involved far more than some of the contributors on here.

Strangely, I have a post in moderation from last night where I linked a number of references to the main Celtic FC site, as I wanted to highlight a number of things that are being done by the club away from affairs of the first team.

In the course of that post I pointed out that Celtic were, in my opinion, very poor at getting this information out– but then went on to pose an alternative theory that maybe, we, the fans, have become so conditioned to a useless and slanted media that over the years we have become conditioned to a mentality that the club– any club— is only to be measured by the first team activity— or lack of it?

If so– then this needs to be addressed– as there is far more to the Celtic Football Club that I want to support than the first team– whilst always recognising that the first team success is the fulcrum of the club and that success makes it easier for all the other activities to gain momentum.

Equally, in those other areas, Celtic can and should always strive to do more and better.

The heading at the top of this blog is Celtic Quick News– not lazy journalism.

That implies a degree of immediacy and speed AND the reporting of opinion, fact and circumstance, news and so on — that is not lazy, casual or even agenda driven.

I think what it means is that you have to report good and bad so that readers are provided with information– and by the way if others have contacts that suggest that the information provided is incorrect or that they disagree with it then that is fine as long as it is delivered in the same spirit.

However, over the last few days, the posts on here have slipped from the sharing of opposite opinions, or disagreement on interpretation or fact, into allegation and counter allegation about who is posting what and why– with it being made clear that posters allegedly have agendas, are acting on behalf of people connected with the club who want to mislead or deceive the fans and so on if they do not criticise current management, and at the same time many dissenting voices are treated as sceptics, non Celtic fans and so on—– you will all know by now that I never use the H word even in jest.

To be clear, my position is that I think the board have to be smarter and have been caught with the trousers down– that does not mean Iwant a new CEO by the way though I do agree that the management set up at Celtic park ( that is the business management as opposed to football management ) is not my kind of model as it is too accounts driven and too full of accountants.

However, what I find truly distasteful is the rabid criticism of posters on here ( and elsewhere ) who have differing views OR who simply chose to share some information with the blog which some do not like or don’t agree with.

If you don’t like the news then by all means say so — or just make no comment at all.

Don’t come on and suggest that people are the CEO’s lapdog or poodle when you know absolutely nothing about the poster concerned. By all means question the information, but to dismiss people out of hand and altogether simply smacks of the same mentality of another group of fans who just don’t like what they hear and don’t want to hear what is actually happening in football or at their club.

Lastly, and for the avoidance of doubt, I have never met Peter Lawell, don’t know him, never spoken to him, e-mailed him or had any communication with him whatsoever. I have no plans to meet him either by the way.

I also don’t know any Celtic board members, nor had any communication with them.

I don’t really know many journalists, and certainly none that would spin stuff for Celtic.

However, I will reveal that I was once asked by the chairman of a senior Scottish Football Club to become a football agent. The idea was to partner up with a former manager of a senior top flight Scottish side ( the man went on to manage outwith Scotland ) with a view to accessing the abundant talent that was available from Eastern Europe and introduce them into the UK.

I have also had the pleasure of having a jaw dropping conversation with the late Ernie Walker– it was his jaw that dropped not mine– and saw at first hand what can happen when the SFA have the odd astonishing problem on their hands.

I passed up the agent opportunity ( after a conversation with someone involved in the business of advising players who was also a trusted colleague of Roy Keane’s former adviser Michael Kennedy ) as it became clear that it was an industry which could make you very rich if you were lucky, but which could easily turn you into a nutcase as there was a great possibility that many many players were incredibly difficult to look after, and that even when you thought something was agreed in football…… it wasn’t!!!

So— against that background I repeat yet again— Celtic have been caught with the trousers at the ankles for the moment…… but I have reason to believe ( cause I have been told ) they have tried to sign players for good money, at reasonable prices and that the price offered in some cases would have been accepted by the selling club…. but the transfers have not gone through for other reasons relating to the player.

Some players have been advised not to say no to those offers– but not to say yes at the moment either.

Believe that… or believe it not… it makes no great difference in the grand scheme of things.

There is of course a number of solutions to this problem.

One such solution is to only offer for the calibre of player who will always jump at the chance to join a club like Celtic….. that way players will be signed at the right money and in jig time. There are plenty of those about.

You will be looking for a new manager though.

  16. Hands up all those who think PL is only there for the salary. Hands up those who think he is trying to balance revenues and costs while trying to maximise success on the park.

Signing players is not easy, just ask Arry Redknapp. He couldn’t even sign Gary Hooper.

Top of the morning to you all from a Fife where the weather looks good out of one window and threatening out of the other.

Regarding Charlotte’s latest on Campbell Ogilvie, I understand that Lord Nimmo Smith is on standby for a new SFA inquiry.

Which brings me nicely on to my pet subject at the moment, the public petition with the Scottish Parliament calling for judges and jurors to register their membership of organisations such as the Masons, Orange Order, or The Speculative Society of Edinburgh.

In 2006 it was found Lords and found that over two-thirds of Scottish Law Lords were undeclared members of the Speculative Society of Edinburgh. Now either you believe that the meeting rooms of the Spec at Edinburgh University imbue the all-male undergraduates who attend (by invitation of the members only) with great powers of jurisprudence or you see the old boy’s network in action, an affront to meritocracy.

William Austin Nimmo Smith is of course a member of the secretive elite. What other secret societies he belongs to ………..we don’t know……..it’s a secret.

    I’m not getting this?

    Please explain.

  18. Tony. I am more interested in getting a goal scorer into the team and Peter lawell is stopping that

I don’t see a problem in paying 6/7 million for goalscorer and that is an end to our transfer dealings

I will place the ripping-off of Celtic fans by their own ‘bored’ as far more important an issue to deal with than the other stuff at the SFA.

You see – there is only one group of powerful fholk who could sort oot both the situations at – CP and Hamdump – the Celtic support.

Properly guided by the right types of Peers – not those sorts with – vested interests

The Celtic support could get rid of the ‘bored’ whose 2 steps forward – 3 steps back policy has / is holding the club back. imo

It seems that the ‘bored’ are embarking upon a certain stratedgy which will – if results don’t go their way – end up with fan demos in the car park again.

I can see the Celtic support – slowly but surely becoming – scunnered by the ‘bored’ and their arrogance.

If Celtic were run by – Cellic Fans – not imposters who will tell you otherwise – whilst taking yer money in one hand and – shoving ye oot the door of YOUR club with the other – maybe a more robust reaction to the LNS result and telling Salmond to stuff his ‘summit’ the day after the ‘shame-game’ were Celtic had 3 players booked – would have given due notice to the establishment that – Celtic FC won’t be f#cked around !!!

With the injuries we currently have maybe we need to look at getting a bigger physio room!

My concern with putting all our eggs in one basket with a big signing like that is that the player may not hit it off. Look at Torres at Chelsea. Nobody thought he would score so few goals. A £6m/7m player can also get injured like anyone else.

    It’s a big risk!
