Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

A large part of that is due to posters wanting virtual cheerleading. Totally deranged in my book.

Historically apart from 67 and 9iar.

Rangers existence or not is the biggest story in Scottish football EVER apart from us doing nothing about it.

I dont see any problém apart from the continual moronic demand for cheerleading.

None of us are going away. Not mě Neganon, Sydneytim etc.

  3. Can anybody help? That’s my 6 week return to Scotland over and tomorrow I fly from Inverness for a few days with one of my sons in London before off back to Thailand.

He stays in Carshalton with Sutton our nearest outlet.

Does anybody know if there is a place where we could watch the game tomorrow evening in that area.

    Many thanks for any help.

  4. Livi I again agree with a lot of what you say. However our scouting for goalscorers over last 5 years has been awfull. But again why waste money on the likes of pukki and his like when we could bring in Russell and other spl goal scorers for peanuts

Long may it continue – our opponents hate us and want us gone for ‘guid’.

Eh aye right ok later, ……….. I honestly hope none of the Celtic squad come in here for inspiration, can you imagine , hahaha, it’s becoming The Celtic Hate The Board News, c’mon Celtic do it tomorrow night and rid us of the Huns on this site, BRT AND H said he doesn’t use the Hun word in here, good for him but in some cases it has to be said in here, because as sure as you get the fly men on the phone inns saying they are Tims, and the go on Hun rants ( cause they can’t help it) they are in here too, so don’t be kidded on, if I sound a bitter man, well that would be because I think I am right , being right doesn’t make me bitter.

Far from obsessed– as I said earlier, I am not even obsessed by the first team, and will post the various links I was referring to up later.

As for PL and all that… well hey I have said my bit and won’t go round and round like a broken record.

What I will say is that I agree with Canamalar’s motion and that questions need to be asked.

However, any business should have a plan — I do not know what Celtic’s is as I am not privy to what goes on at the club.

However, I would have two sub business plans and one primary one.

Sub plan number one is to develop the triangle, create a greater match day experience for the fans and at the same time generate regular steady non football related income for the benefit of the club.

Sub plan number two: Potentially the remainder of the ground at Lennoxtoun is a far greater asset than the triangle. With the economy on the up, I would be looking at seriously capitalising on this ground and its medium to long term use ( I don’t see it as a short term asset to flip– that would be a waste ).

Develop the ground and again secure regular non playing income for the club.

Ok — to the major plan.

For years we were told that lack of competition meant that we could not compete in Europe. I do not accept that.

The Champions League has become the primary league in Europe with everything else being classed as second class.

Celtic, if they work on it, can negotiate their way into that league as of right if they continue to qualify for the group stages. They should win the Scottish league and so they gain the keys to the CL door. That ambition has to be paramount.

Continued strengthening of the squad on the back of prolonged increased revenue ( on and off the field ) should make qualification and participation in that league much more realistic.

Accordingly, in footballing terms, Celtic should set a target. That target should be to look down the road from this point in time and aim to put together a team that can win the champions league in say 3-4 years time– maybe 5 years time?

    Think that is ambitious?

Well, who knows who will be the stars of the champions league in 2017/18 — but signing players on the basis of a good but not over priced basic wage structure with fantastic built in bonuses for champions league progression is the way to go.

Develop the cream of European football with a view to keeping them and latterly mixing them with affordable ( dearer than we appear currently willing to pay but not the mental money that is floating about such as £90M ) experienced players a la Henrik going to Barcelona ( by the way there is another who ran a contract down to determine his own moves– and did so with the blessing of all of us ) — and it was he who delivered the cup with the big ears– not Ronaldhino or Eto.

Business planning in any field makes for success.

Yes you have to look at finance and need the accountants to keep you in line–but plan with ambition, set goals and targets for your core business and do your best to implement them.

If it doesn’t work, you will have had fun trying and you will have taken the business forward in any event– in this instance the club/team would go forward.

Finally as you go on– renew the plan time and time again.

And do you know what—- to hell with the SFA and all they say and do because if you follow that plan they will be helpless to interfere and will just jump on your coat tails.

Right going out to meet a man to talk about God knows what… business stuff apparently!

  8. Woke up this morning and thought, I don’t want to just beat Shakter, and obviously go through, I want us to hammer and embarrass them.

6-0 if we turn up, 4-0 if half the team turns up, 1-0 if no-one turns up.

    Here’s hoping we turn up

  9. Silver City 1888 @ 10;06,

This is a proposition that once again defies logic.

We are told as Celtic arn’t guarateed UCL Football, the Footballing budget can’t assume UCL participation, therefore how can we possibly sign a player that wants guaranteed UCL footie?

There are a few pubs on Sutton High Street that have Sky Sports – The game is on Sky Sports 1 – BUT – sometimes if a London game is on (I think Arsenal are on?) it is difficult to get the pub to change the chanel as pub is usually full of London team fans (mostly Chelsea in Sutton) – I think but not 100% sure that the Holiday Inn has Sky sports – nice Hotel and good bar

To be 100% sure – you could take the train from Sutton to Balham (20 mins) change and take the tube from Balham to The Oval (10 mins) walk 5 mins along Kennington Road to a pub called The Bear it is a big Celtic pub definately showing the game and packed with Celtic fans – Its a bit of a journey but worth it ??

    Have fun

The transfer merry-go-round will kick off once the Bale deal goes through. It will kick off a spending frenzy in England.

So what you’re saying is that the transfer of Bale is the singularity from which all deals emerge, creating ever higher value densities, thus leading to a new plateau of player movement?

The halftime pies, however, will remain mystifyingly overpriced.

Hope our players perform on the park 2maro evening as good as Lenny and sammi did at that press conference a wile ago. Talking the talk lets see if they can walk the walk. Sometimes I wish they would just give the press nothin and do their talkin on the pitch.

  18. Twists, moving the ball about is good. For it not to appear insipid and for it to lead to considerably more danger for our opponents and excitement for our supporters, what is required is not a wholesale change, but for the players to keep doing what they do, just much faster. Moving the ball quickly is the key, I believe.

  19. Ideally I’d like to see this line up

    Was it the paper round?

    Only kiddin’!

Hope you and yours are well!

  22. For large parts on Saturday the only player who was moving for the ball when we were in posession was Scott Brown.

We seemed to want to stand static and wait for the ball to come to us, quite frustrating to watch at times.

For me it’s a coaching thing, likewise FF being seemingly unable to command his box, all down to coaching, repetition of the basics and they become second nature.

We are lacking up front, that’s for sure and i hope we are working hard to get someone in.

I keep thinking back to putting 9 past aberdeen after KOK was with is for a week…

    Coaching.
