Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

Apparently our targets don’t want to play for us.

Think we should target players who want to sign for us, sure with mixed results but it’s worked pretty well for the last 125yrs.

TODAY, August 27 marks the anniversary of the Demolition Derby, when Martin O’Neill’s Celtic side triumphed 6-2 in the first Glasgow derby of the 2000/01 season.

The result was to be the springboard for a treble-winning campaign and a period of sustained domination by the Hoops in Scottish football.

It was a magical day in Paradise, and we take a trip down memory lane to remember the famous Demolition Derby…

You stick to what you think is important, you slag PL and The Celtic Board, I back PL and The Celtic Board, and keep an eye on the SFA. Happy days.

  4. Livinbhoy. In a way I agree with you. I doesn’t matter if its PL or joe blogs in the job. It’s the policy that is the problem

And that policy does not work when you need to find a goalscorer that you need to pay a premium for

  5. Henr1k – re George Galloway – he never actually tabled a question for debate. He raised an Early Day Motion, which is essentially just him voicing his opinion to Parliament, in this case supported by Ronnie Campbell and Jim McGovern and that’s about it.

Apparently it’s only if an Early Day Motion receives overwhelming support that it ends up being debated.

It’s more or less a bit of meaningless grandstanding.

It might be the case that the players we need to qualify for the CL might not want to sign for us until they are guaranteed CL football. Catch 22.

  10. Livibhoy. What is a bigger risk is signing cheap forwards who don’t score goals then have no resale value. See murphy bangura etc

To say we won’t push the boat to buy a player who might get injured is the same for every club. But they still do it

The heading at the top of this blog is Celtic Quick News– not lazy journalism.

Sorry, my friend but lazy journalism disappeared some time ago. I think in part this may be why the site has deteriorated so much in recent months.

Used to be a quality place to come for news affecting Celtic. Seems now more a whingers corner or Rangers-obsessed site.

So, so sad and, I think,in so small part why so many quality posters are no longer regulars here.

You seem fixated with the transfer window and Peter Lawwell. Gary and Victor knew their tea was out when Peter Lawwell played the only card he has. His hardball card. When both of them started sulking ať the start of last season. Their replacements should have been sealed. I agree with Livibhoy that PL only carries out the boreds wishes and with an eye on his million dollar bonus.

As Neganon has stated regularly for years we are in a holding position waiting for a bigger invite. Seville MON, WGS last 16, NL last 16 ….all subsequently undermined. Historical undebatable fact.

As is CQN going down the toilet since the 5 way agreement. Dumbed down to attract the dumb ass faithful or a by product.

Spin is exactly what its about. When we také on the corruption. I might change my mind but until then I am telling the truth.

CRC great news about MacKenzie but we need to start a change in policy ( no I am not on about Celtic PLC…. )!

Flying the German Doctor in and having the treatment here makes sense and cuts costs, however, a dedicated treatment centre in the UK would save millions per year and give great hope to loads of kids.

Stress/Worry is a big factor here and plays on the health of all concerned so it makes sense.

I have reissued calls re the petition and if anyone has not signed it please click on the link below and sign please– it costs nothing other than a few minutes. We are just short of 10,000 signatures at the moment.

We can change things here if we get a head of steam up and it will benefit wee Oscar and loads of other wee Oscars in the long run.

I don;t diagree with all your points. I just think that there is some middle ground in the transfer fee and that Celtic need more than one top quality striker. I would say we need at least two. Hopefully around the £2m mark. You don’t always have to spend millions tho. Celtic have always been a club that can buy players for a reasonable price and turn them into great goal scorers. Most of our most prolific strikers have come from Scottish clubs for little outlay. There are still gems out there. Cash will be spent before the window closes.

The transfer merry-go-round will kick off once the Bale deal goes through. It will kick off a spending frenzy in England. Celtic will get a few players from that frenzy which will see players across Europe go to England and players will be surplus at clubs. Very good players too whilst clubs satisfy their fans need for big names on huge wages who will probably be average most of the time.

Celtic should have signed a striker in January. Even someone like Billy McKay from ICT (Just an example of a player who can score regularly in SPL not the answer to our striking problems) would have done as he would bang the goals in in the SPL whilst we now have the prospect of playing tomorrow night with two strikers who have little football played in the Hoops.

I still think we will do it on Wednesday and we will bring in some quality.

  25. Morning,

Just sat down in the office with a quick coffee. On to CQN and as of the late its all the usual guff about how badly the club is run bla blah, sack the board ,PL is in it for himself. We are not interested in moving forward etc, etc. Tomorrow evening we will play the most important game in recent times. This is huge. The team made a complete balls up of the first leg. The team. Not Peter Lawell nor Dermot Desmond. It was all down to Lennon and the side who took on Shaktar. That same team needs all the help it can get. That means you and me getting behind the side 150%.

I will now sign off CQN till well after tomorrow nights game. I have a hunch that win or lose the exact same garbage will fly through this blog. That is not what supporting Celtic is about folks. My love for Celtic goes well beyond any defeat. I support the team who takes to the hallowed turf at Celtic Park. Not a PLC or board. It’s all about McGrain, McStay, Henrik, Lubo, Jinky, Ceasar, Murdoch, Lennon, Hartson and the magnificent Tommy Burns.

This blog is either banging on about Rangers and their sad existence, of which I am totally sick to the back teeth of, or our apparent reluctance to buy payers at inflated prices when we all know that we are in a market that is on its arse. We don’t automatically qualify for the CL group stages and are unlikely to do so in the near future. Therefore our club must run its business based on that until such times we make it to the promised land.

CQN was a great blog. Not anymore.

I really hope and pray we get a result tomorrow evening.

    Ha hail.
