Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

I would give my predictions for Wednesday night, but, given my performance in the CQN predictor, it would be rightly ignored.

So I will curtail my thoughts and predict….

  2. kikinthenakas as far as we are all aware , we have only bid for one goal scorer and that was finbogossen and that was well under the valve

i ignore the bids for other players as they were not goalscorers, so does not matter if bid was acepted or not

  5. Regarding CF latest tweets relating to CO I won’t be getting my hopes up.

Some had high hopes with the LNS investigation and that was a stitch up so this will be no different.

This country will do anything to help the cheats and charity thieves and I won’t be holding my breath on Campbell Ogilvie being removed.

I always ? why do the zombies never ask for Ogilvie to be removed.

Time to wise up and let it go because if my club have been silenced on this matter then this shenanigans will continue and there’s nothing we can do about it.

Corruption is rife and the man at the centre of it was re-elected by my club.

Just remember when the zombies are back singing their bile and getting a helping hand from Hugh Dallas’s son and the bold honest mistakes creeping in again just remember we as Celtic fans had numerous chances to change the corruption and rule breaking but we done jack shi*.

Oh silly me no doubt someone will come back and post Celtic are waiting for the right time they are playing a blinder in all of this but in my opinion it’s bullshi* wise up our club are part of the problem with keeping quiet.

    Morning all.

Yesterday someone once again linked us with this guy as the midfielder we were chasing. I have no idea if this is true — but I certainly hope it is!

Here are 15 minutes of why! Worth watching every second BTW

As regular as clockwork at this time of the transfer window the whisperings are released. We were close to signing a striker, the money was acceptable, the player changed his mind etc etc etc.

This is simply PR by Celtic to cover their inability or unwillingness to pay the going rate for a striker.

    It’s tedious tiresome and boring.

Regardless of any of the reasons given the failure to aquire any of our top targets is exactly that, a failure.

When’s our CEO’s next bonus due?

  9. It’s not Celtic PR spin.

    It’s Daily Racord spin.

    Stop reading it.

  10. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

So all the players in Europe are waiting until the end of the window except Celtic players. The lengths that the fans go to to protect our plcs reputation is perverse in the extreme.

So this is why Joe Ledley and Anthony Stokes are holding out. And what for ?

More money of course and naturally we do all our deals ať the start of the transfer window. Agents will not have noticed that.

As for Dylan hasn’t he gone backwards. Its been over a year since his jaw break. I never saw anything from him against Liverpool in the friendly.

Neganons postings certainly attracts the worst kind of poster on CQN.

    Serious question.

For what it’s worth – I think that the – gullable / brainwashed / happy-clapping / balance-sheet orientated – chunk of the Celtic support of today are being taken for one ‘grand-old’ ride by DD’s puppet’s who operate on every level of Celtic FC / PLC.

  14. We were told all transfer fee’s will go into new players…

Then when vic got sold we were told it would tie down the players we want at club long term…

Any those sign new deal yet ?

Hopefully we get the result we need on wednesday.. Victory should release a load of transfer money to lennon. Be interesting to see if it does.

Summer started so well, was delighted when virgil and balde were snapped up straight away, cant believe were still scrapping around for striker.

  15. Top of the morning to you all from a Fife where the weather looks good out of one window and threatening out of the other.

Regarding Charlotte’s latest on Campbell Ogilvie, I understand that Lord Nimmo Smith is on standby for a new SFA inquiry.

Which brings me nicely on to my pet subject at the moment, the public petition with the Scottish Parliament calling for judges and jurors to register their membership of organisations such as the Masons, Orange Order, or The Speculative Society of Edinburgh.

In 2006 it was found Lords and found that over two-thirds of Scottish Law Lords were undeclared members of the Speculative Society of Edinburgh. Now either you believe that the meeting rooms of the Spec at Edinburgh University imbue the all-male undergraduates who attend (by invitation of the members only) with great powers of jurisprudence or you see the old boy’s network in action, an affront to meritocracy.

William Austin Nimmo Smith is of course a member of the secretive elite. What other secret societies he belongs to ………..we don’t know……..it’s a secret.

    Good morning CQNers,

I’m heartened that this guy, should he come, is another ‘footballer’ to add to the recent ‘footballing’ acquisitions. He, with Rogic would definitely add some sparkle to our midfield.

Having read repeated posts criticising everyone from DD down over recent weeks I can’t remember a single poster targeting the players that have left.

How come the players have escaped any of the opprobrium that’s being dished out, surely they, with their agents are due some criticism for wanting away in the first place and then the timing of their departures.

Loyalty is something that is bought and sold these days and its probably fair to say it’s a reflection of modern society.Forget the kissing of badges and the media sound bites about the great supporters, it’s all about money.

    Oh, yeah ?

A club just out of administration and yet – Glasgow Celtic’s best player should go to that club and fight relegation battles ? WTF ?

How is it that – Celtic have no problems moving players out the door ?

But – bringing them in – you have to negotiate a compendium of red-tape issue’s – spun by PL’s spin-doctors.

    Say no more.

Gents, I take my leave for a fortnight’s holiday where I intend to do nothing other than read and listen to music by a poolside and be served brandy, lemonade and ice when I require some refreshment.

I will, of course catch tomorrow night’s game and I’m sure it’ll put me in good stead for the remainder of my holiday.

See you all in a fortnight, God willing.

  21. Judging by Lenny’s comments after the ICT game, I doubt we’ll be seeing Watt on the starting line-up.

“Some of them let the game pass them by”

“I’m relying on the same ones (players)” – Brown, Ledley, Ambrose, Mulgrew – whom he later goes on to describe as ‘stalwarts’.

I think his comments are a tad unfair on the two front men, who were introduced to each other for the first time in a competitive match. He does get one thing spot on, when he castigates Izaguirre for his ‘sloppy’ play at the second goal.

In fact, Izzy, and the tactic of running our attacking play through him for all of 75 minutes, was the main cause of our defensive weakness, and our blunt attacking play going forward.

None of this, however, means his name will be missing from the staring line-up tomorrow night!

We need Mulgrew at CB, not LM, not, CM, not LB – CB!

This means Izzy will be the default LB, and it means we MUST play 4-4-2, or a variant thereof.

As Paul67 rightly pointed out, Celtic looked better when Matthews played RM in front of Lustig, while Watt went LM (also setting up a couple of golden chances himself).

This lies at the heart of what has gone wrong since Gary and Vic left. We are sticking with 4-3-3 when we need to get back to basics.

The days of 4-3-3, with Wanyama as its midfield lynch-pin, and Hooper its spearhead in attack, are gone.

We are operating now with new players, unused to one another, who need the simple, clear, straight lines of 4-4-2 to help get them through the early stages of playing alongside one another.

Izzy with Boerrigter or Sammi down the left, Lustig with Commons or Matthews down the right. These appear to work, and are what Lenny has to go with in this vital game.

    Keep it simple!
