Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

  2. Right guys, my day is coming to an end. Can I just say that I was brought up supporting Celtic in the early 50s and things like fone ins and the ole social media didn’t exist. So after the media coverage of US winning the BIG CUP, which was nothing like the nuclear coverage the sewer rats got for winning the diddy cup, I have never bought a scottish printed national newspaper since. However I am still a Celtic Supporter and ST holder, and will be till the day I die. Hopefully well in the future. Ha.

pintaguinness, fair play, i think we all will, was disappointed he didn’t learn from his mistakes which is worrying. Re cental defence, CM in midfield , sammy up front, forrest not fit all contributed as well as many players off form.

  7. i think we will spend well in the next few days up till monday getting players in sometimes it can work in your favour as no one has time to tip other teams off of your interests and some clubs can be desperate at that late stage to get some fresh cash in h.h

Cowiebhoy, good point, i’d like to see us with a team of ball players and far better technically than we are, lets study the best in europe and try to emulate them. Get the impression that they train for a couple of hours then its free time!

It’s frustrating as he’ll that we’re sitting on the edge of the abyss regarding qualification to the group stages of the CL and everyone knows we need a prolific goal scorer added to the squad.

In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter a great deal, the vast majority of people will continue to go and watch the team.

Id get wee Forrest to thump their goalie in the first 5 mins. No ref wd send that wee Bhoy off.

  12. Where is a good place to watch the game in Vegas on Wednesday?

I know there are a lot of “sportsbook bars” with multi screens. But is there a place where Celtic supporters congregate?

(p.s. obviously I won’t be at the game, but my seat will be occupied)

  13. paolosboots Good Luck Wee Oscar on

HT, I think if we don’t make it then those who would have bought CL packages and gone to a number of games will choose to do other things, that happened to a dead team when we were no competition seems to be the cycle of things. Its a spiral less fans less money etc etc. Still can’t believe we have been short changed by a short sighted business strategy and that shows an amateurish approach from the boardroom, we should have had Alfie and pukki for £6-7m , with hooper money £5.5m and Wilson £2.5m as well as £500k from Dublin without touch Wanyama money!!!. I feel the fans have been hoodwinked and even happy clappers are not at all happy. I needs to be all right on the night!

I wish Celtic wd have signed young Mc Gowan from terts b4 he went to China. He had the makings of a very good CB imo. And scored a goal or 2 too.

As you say high balls will be playing into their hands.

I read bobby lennox’s book a while ago…he reckoned the most dangerous cross is to drive it low and hard into the six yard box, especially if playing against a tall defence.

Here’s hoping lenny has read it.hh

CELTIC target Nir Biton would love to follow in the footsteps of Efe Ambrose and seal a dream move from Ashdod to Parkhead.

The Scottish champions have already opened talks with Biton’s club.

The 21-year-old, who has six caps, is a midfield partner of Beram Kayal in the national side and is also close friends with defender Ambrose, who left Ashdod last year.

Biton said: “Of course I would be interested in a move to a big European club like Celtic.

“I know a bit about them because my friend Efe Ambrose moved there last year.

“I have spoken to him quite a few times and he has told me that Celtic is a very good club and Scotland is a great place.

“I know how big a club they are and it is flattering to be linked with a club like Celtic.”
