Shared business plan? Not in a million years

1070

I see comment in today’s Telegraph about a shortage of staff to facilitate a club which occasionally hosts circa 50,000 fans at Ibrox.  Let me put some meat on the financial bones of that particular project.

During 2010-11, the last season Paul Murray and Dave King were directors at Ibrox, Rangers spent £27.7m on wages with the bulk of that, some £21.5m, going on players and football management, while £6.2m went on non-football related wages.

That same season 37,599 season ticket sales were bought, all at ‘full price’, of course, which brought in £12.9m (this is net of vat, remember).  That was a bumper European season for Rangers.  They qualified for the Champions League, where they faced Manchester United, Bursaspor and Valencia.  They then dropped to the Europa League, where they beat Sporting Lisbon before going out to PSV Eindhoven.  Total ticket sales, including all cup, European, away support and individual match sales, came to £19.9m.

Newco’s revenue from all ticket sales and hospitality sales last season was £12.4m.  They also paid £1.629 in equipment hire and plant depreciation, this figure is not coming down, while costs for police, insurance, rates, water, electricity, gas, IT, office consumables, cleaning and the odd onerous contract was £16.4m

So consider: the last non-football wages at oldco was £6.2m and total ticket and hospitality sales last season at newco was £12.4m, while a recent peak for season ticket sales at oldco was £12.9m.

The only way modern football is a viable business at a stadium which regularly holds circa 50,000 people is with the support of healthy retail and merchandise deals, and with regular group stage European football.

Newco don’t have access to Europe, as they are a newco, and they don’t have healthy retail and merchandise deals.

If they eventually qualify for Europe they will need to eliminate seeded teams at every round to progress to group stage football.  They are not in as healthy a position as they were when Charles Green took over.  Green and his cronies had their business plan spiked, before those onerous contracts kicked in, by way of compensation, ironically, leaving the new regime with the prize they planned for, but it’s a battered looking trophy.

Now they have as much money as tub thumping can generate and Sugar Daddies are prepared to pony up.  No one has yet explained how this club is a viable entity.

For the record, we don’t share a business plan.  Not in a million years.

    Rangers wouldn’t survive a 16 team league.

Better that they continue to get some temporary oxygen to keep them in their current division for another year.

A share issue and a few thousand more season tickets might get them to next year but that will be with a team of boys.

They could still be in a division with Falkirk, Queen of the Sourh and one from Motherwell , St Mirren and Ross County. A club like Morton getting promoted would cause them problems.

Ibrox by this point will be on the Verge of being closed due to health and safety fears.

Apparently we should open our windows and smell the fear though.

Chris Graham will sort it all out with his neon gloves and hateful tweets though.

  9. Was hoping the St Johnstone game would be the perfect opportunity for some squad players to give RD some selection headaches for the run in – now he knows who’s not gonna fit into his future plans. The DDunited game tells us nothing about the squad due to that cnut in black.

For all you who say RD shouldn’t be talking about the treble…..please…..for a club with our resources I’d be embarrassed if our manager wasn’t mentioning it as a target, not that we’d win, but a target. Which, IMHO, we will win ;-))

    Thanks for replying.

I honestly dont know. PL puts out what can be at best described as conflicting messages.

I recently had a conversation with a guy who is very close to a SPFL a professional board member and he categorically stated that the SPFL would not allow the SFA to fudge with huns on what was at the time the Ashley ownership v King fit and proper.

He said that the PB would force out CO etc if they felt they had to.

You can draw your own early conclusions to how that turned out.

I suppose they’ll be worried now that the useless mob don’t even make 4 th place.

A seventeen team league is for the good of Scoddish foodball.

Could someone else ask ACGR if he is going to the replay and staying in town. If I ask again I’ll just sound needy.

  18. Wee story about Cheltenham. How luck worksIn 1982 I was in Saudi, and a wee guy who worked with me from Norwich, had started to do his bookie for his best mate in Norwich, who was a bookie. He would phone the bets in.He told me his mate was doing a novelty bet, name the 4 teams who would go through in the English cup from the quarter finals,25/1.Loads punted on it.Can only remember, the big one for me,but they were all difficult.I took Plymouth to get through against Derby. They did after a replay.I was the only one that took them.£100,at 25/1.For Cheltenham,I thought, fek it,already up,I put £200 double on Burrough Hill Lad,Jenny Pitmans Novice,9/2,and Dawn Run,4/1 second favorite against the awesome fav,Gay Brief.

The day before the race Gay Brief was withdrawn, injured, and Dawn Run then went to 10/11 fav. Both romped it.£7,000,in a couple of weeks, through sheer luck.

Have had a great wee love affair with Cheltenham since.Been 4 times and always done well.

Hope everyone betting tomorrow has that kind of luck.HAIL HAIL.

  19. Sevco result

So the boos continue even with a new regime (new regime ibrox = out with the old back in with the even older)

Now it is the team that is the problem again

There is not a gnats piss chance of it putting out a forest fire and there is not a gnats piss chance of King sorting some of their on the pitch mess out till close season

So no wonder another season in the championship is appealing

On another more sentimental note for those sevconians still pining for the good olde days

We hear a cardigan comeback could steady the ship by telling the slackers either shape up or shape out

Of course a right pile of them are out of contract at the end of the season so that will be pretty easy for the olde yin to handle. All he has to do is scare the shit oot the wee guys on longer contracts

Yep Watty the Gray will be back in some capacity he is their Gandalf after all and Graham Wormtongue is already in place so it makes sense muddle earth wise

  22. There’s an absolute imbalance in Scottish Football…..1 club 1 vote on committee, my erchie. As the preeminent economic football force in this country, we should have a ( according to other clubs disproportionate ) influence on all decisions affecting our club, unashamedly ;-))
