Shane Duffy and space for a project

712

At 6’ 4” and built like the Free Derry Wall in the town he knows so well, Shane Duffy brings experience and assurance to the middle of the Celtic defence.  What would have happened had he been at the club eight days earlier is imponderable.

I don’t know Shane well enough to comment on that question but I am assured by Irish friends he has been an impenetrable leader in their national team for years.  He is at Celtic because his time as first choice at Brighton is over, but he is still only 28, which is the middle of the peak years for many central defenders. We have recruited a player who will be influential in the chase for 10.

The most pleasing aspect of his signature is the tactical shift another central defender gives us towards three at the back.  Surely Shane, Kristoffer and Christopher will all play when fit?  That being the case, I would like to see us add one more central def.: space for ‘a project’.

On corners, the one that comes to mind because it continues to make me laugh is the Tony Stokes debate.

Celtic fans were going doolally on Twitter about Celtic’s rubbish corners and why was our centre forward wasting his time on the touchline taking them?

The bould Tony tweeted into the conversation, ” I take them because I’m told to take them.”

    End of thread.

  2. Best header of a ball in my lifetime, i.e timing, hanging in the

air, force of ball hitting the onion bag, no contest, our greatest

    ever captain, big Billy,

Next is difficult, big Sutty, maybe Henky, but what might be a

bit of a dark horse, big Billy Stark at the back post.

But my pick is the most accomplished football player of my

lifetime who scored numerous headers, out jumping many

players many inches bigger than him.

I Give you the incomparable Jinky Jimmy Johnson.

Believe me you young rebels, I wish you could have watched

    that wee mhan.

    I was so lucky.

  3. Regarding set pieces, I would like a lot of variation. Consider having someone small out wide in both sides taking two markers out of the box. And Stein tactics like getting someone wee to stand on the post and move before a corner or free kick taken hopefully taking some big defender away with them leaving room for one of our tall guys to freely attack the ball. A hard cross into a crowded box with people facing the wrong way could get you a deflection or even better a stramash and a shot on goal from close range. Easy this football tactics thingy on a forum 😉

I’m reminded of Barry John’s riposte to Gareth Edwards when he was over complicating how he was going to pass the ball out from a scrum, ‘just you throw it and I’ll catch it’.

Why do so many of Celtic corners end up absolutely no where near a Celtic player? Is it intentional?

  5. MELBOURNE MICK on 4TH SEPTEMBER 2020 11:13 AM

It’s worth remembering though that Both Cesar and Jinky suffered from neurological condition which might have been caused by repeated heading of the ball. So it’s maybe selfish and irresponsible to be asking players nowadays to do what they did.

  6. Bring back the floaty, reverse spin Davie Provan corners from the right hand side. Despite looking awful, we scored from them a fair bit. e.g., 4-2 vs Huns May ’83. SC Final (very indirectly) ’80.

i used to take corners and i either floated it to land near my big guys at the edge of the 6 yard box i.e. get up and fight for it with keeper not coming for it, or i curled it to the back post

    PS

I was one of those who could shoot from outside the area or do long passes across field with ease but had to really concentrate and put extra effort into corner. makes no sense physically ; must have been psychological e.g. watching everyone watching you . Shite at pennoes too but not bad at free kicks. Basically an enthusiastically shite player!

  7. T7- in a lot of cases, if you book flight only you lose your money, a package holiday you’re covered.

  8. Ok Ernie so what are you suggesting, ban heading?

Me personally I played heidy fitba for years with a ball

which if it wasn’t dubbined was more like a cannonball, maybe

I was lucky or as my wee princess says ” Mick you are so

    thick-heided ”

And as you said ” might have been caused by ” but not confirmed

    H.H. Mick.

Lets just say this, regardless of who you are or not, I would not be relying on somebody like Tom Driberg as a reliable source for anything. That anti-Semitism was a major problem in Poland in the 1930s there is no doubt, historical through the ages in Russia, (see that relationship with Poland), Eastern Europe over the years, role of Catholic Church etc. Chances are some Poles during WWII would still share those prejudices, but in relying on Driberg them you have managed to insult all of those Polish soldiers in Britain who made some contribution to defeating Nazism. There may be some truth in Jan T Gross’s “Neighbours” but nobody would rely on him as a definitive historical source re Poland during the war. Any more than you should rely on Driberg.

  10. on the flight refunds

i was offered a voucher by Aer Lingus for the St Johnstone game weekend as Covid was hitting. Took a while and a few follow ups , but i got the voucher. Ryanair offered a re-book and i used that option to book for early 2021. All good

My wife had booked us flight with Ryanair to Holland and Ryanair cancelled those flights. Legally they have to give a refund. They still haven’t 8 months on. Said they were snowed under and we should wait and not chase them . Then they offered a voucher which she rejected and now they are in deep cover again.

    Poor show i think

‘Ok Ernie so what are you suggesting, ban heading?’

I’m not suggesting it, but I can understand the reluctance of players and coaches to get involved in the repeated practice it takes to perfect the skill, given what we now suspect might be the consequences.

  12. TIMMY7_NOTED

    Aye, hopefully!

We had a 4 day break booked for a refurbed farmhouse in Perthshire, but the owners changed their mind and gave us back our money!

Mibbe they know what I’m like!

Now have a 4 day break next month booked in Loch Katrine area.

I did miss the sun on my back this year as I suffer from psoriasis, however, a good few sunny days here may be just as good!

Wearing Castore did not seem to help Andy Murray in New York. Completely demolished in straight sets by the young Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime earlier this morning our time.

For the record the twenty year old will win big at some point from here on in. Tremendous player.

  15. Hopefully McKenna will be the ” project” Paul 67 is talking about.

He has the potential to be a stalwart for us for many years.

One advantage of staying in a Yes voting area is that i’ll be heading to the pub today with the mad hound. ( 4 legged one 😀 )

Swans, Foxes, dogs and beer, what’s not to like.

    HH to all.

PS : Bateen Bhoy, another time hopefully . Couldn’t believe how quiet Abz was. Not good.

    Cheers.

OK, so you weren’t previously aware of the issue of Jewish soldiers deserting from the free Polish forces because of the Antisemitism they faced, and your response is to deny that it happened, because it doesn’t suit your narrative.

I can see a bit of a trend.

  17. PHILBHOY

Never managed to reply to you at the time, but kudos to you for

the apology regarding the remarks towards our manager.

I knew as a Celtic man you were better than that.

Are you another comparatively recent recruit to the board?

  19. Ernie

Replying with a quote from late 60’s early /70’s rugby kind of reinforces my point.

“Why do so many of Celtic corners end up absolutely no where near a Celtic player? Is it intentional?”

Nope- it is just the odds.

As I said- we need to compare the success of Celtic at corners compared with other teams before deciding if this is an actual problem or just one of uninformed perception.

  20. MELBOURNE MICK on 4TH SEPTEMBER 2020

Agree. PHILBHOY was only acting in the heat of the moment.

A very good Celtic man indeed.

That Ferencvaros result was very, very, very, very, very hard to take.

    Cheers and HH.

    👏👏👏

You have expertly explained what I wanted to say but couldn’t be arsed every time someone mentions poor corner taking.

If it was only about practice there would never be a bad corner taken. By any team.
