Shane Duffy and space for a project

712

At 6’ 4” and built like the Free Derry Wall in the town he knows so well, Shane Duffy brings experience and assurance to the middle of the Celtic defence.  What would have happened had he been at the club eight days earlier is imponderable.

I don’t know Shane well enough to comment on that question but I am assured by Irish friends he has been an impenetrable leader in their national team for years.  He is at Celtic because his time as first choice at Brighton is over, but he is still only 28, which is the middle of the peak years for many central defenders. We have recruited a player who will be influential in the chase for 10.

The most pleasing aspect of his signature is the tactical shift another central defender gives us towards three at the back.  Surely Shane, Kristoffer and Christopher will all play when fit?  That being the case, I would like to see us add one more central def.: space for ‘a project’.

There’s nothing glib or superficial about pointing out the dangers of blood and soil nationalism.

Though I can understand why you find it objectionable.

  2. Off to watch Ireland match.

Answer is Konrad Kapler. Signed for Celtic in 1947. Played for Polish Army football team.

There is a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, erected by the Polish Ambulance Service who were billeted in Laetare, at St Michaels in Linlithgow.

Laetare was a serious of halls and accomodation used mainly for retreat and prayer, a place my Dad went to a number of times.

The buildings were demolished a few years ago, but the statue remains!

  4. Ireland 4-3-3 working well

Top 3 harry and middle three don’t get too far apart. Connelly lively

McCarthy happy to push up into contact and not retreating into space to pass

    Shane tidy so far

This formation would work a treat for Celtic in a lot of ways but we would need a CM happy to play like McCarthy.

Thank you,as you have seen a bit of help from some the books I have collected through the years. From old handbooks,Celtic view(s),scrapbooks, programmes I have from the 50s to the present.I have a picture of a Celtic ball boy( name James Tait ) helping a Celtic player,I think,is Johnny Divers who got entangled in the nets. The paper in question The Sunday Post,I did ask through a few sites,if James Tait is about,so as to give the cutting to him or someone who would know him.Alas,no response, and the picture has been in my scrapbook since 1962.

  6. Test events with spectators present have been postponed until restrictions are lifted in Glasgow.

  7. this is the first time I’ve seen Duffy playing. He is playing in a team on the front foot, therefore plenty space around him. He has absolutely NO pace at all – just got tore to shreds. VITAL that we have pace beside him.

He looks good in the air and has won some 1-1’s but giving away silly fouls

So far he looks rusty and I hope this is due to where he’s at pre-season.

  8. Back to Basics

We could have had Castagne for half of that, minus the 3 million for Bolingoli not to mention the wage, shame.

  9. First time watching Duffy, think he’ll do ok so long as he doesn’t kick the ball, or we find an 11ft forward

An older guy who worked beside me years ago used to tell the story of the Gaelic footballer who played one game in goal for Celtic. I didn’t start going to games till 1964-65.

  11. PHILBOY – O’Dowda looks decent on the right wing – I’m sure Duffy will improve once he gets a few games under his belt. Fitness aside, they had a free kick into the Irish box, Duffy was 5yards off their center half who’s free header went straight to keeper. If that was Ayer or Julien we’d be going ballistic – I was expecting Duffy to own the box.

Again , first time I’ve seen him and unfair of me to judge so early in his season, its also been a massive week emotionally for him.

  12. Did we ever have a player or players that played bare foot (no boots)

    Serious question.

    D :)

Yes, an Indian winger who played around 1937. He played in bare feet wrapped by trainer Tom

McMenemy in bandages. Scored a goal against Hamilton Accies.
