Shane Duffy and space for a project

712

At 6’ 4” and built like the Free Derry Wall in the town he knows so well, Shane Duffy brings experience and assurance to the middle of the Celtic defence.  What would have happened had he been at the club eight days earlier is imponderable.

I don’t know Shane well enough to comment on that question but I am assured by Irish friends he has been an impenetrable leader in their national team for years.  He is at Celtic because his time as first choice at Brighton is over, but he is still only 28, which is the middle of the peak years for many central defenders. We have recruited a player who will be influential in the chase for 10.

The most pleasing aspect of his signature is the tactical shift another central defender gives us towards three at the back.  Surely Shane, Kristoffer and Christopher will all play when fit?  That being the case, I would like to see us add one more central def.: space for ‘a project’.

The lack of masks In secondary school classrooms and of social distancing in secondary schools might well lead to the closure of schools more quickly than many folk think.

No thought has been given to the safety of teachers and other staff in schools and this might well lead to a lack of frontline staff in schools in the coming weeks.

  2. Not sure I am quite getting the digs that are being aimed at JMcG for his move to AV.

From what I remember the move took place during the PL / BR willi waving competition — peak trouser snakery if you like and so it happened against a background of trouble in Paradise.

JMcG was not the cause of that he just had to work his way through the fog.

A fog of PL’s own making — nickel and dime’ing of the transfer fee to the point that AV became credible.

Then more fog on the wages — complex number from us vs simple number from AV.

Then setting JMcG up to fail — he only would make the AV number if he played every game.

JMcG to BR — will you play me every game / will you guarantee me a start every week?

BR to JMcG — no can’t do that / all down to form and the needs of the team — standard stuff.

JMcG @ 22 coming off a Hibs level contract = I will take the guaranteed money then.

NL and SD have had a few years of good money when they signed for Celtic.

A big wedge in the bank can make that an easier decision so please less cheap shots at JMcG.

CHARLIEBHOY on 2ND SEPTEMBER 2020 8:49 PM and all you ex St Patrick’s Bhoys I am slightly older than you guys except for Tontine Tim I left in 1963.Wee Toomy lived in Strathleven Place next to St Patrick’s Church.I was hopeless at Art and Big Tottie McLaughlin made me write out the Last Gospel of the Latin Mass 20 times as a punishment.I was belted by a collection of sadists Tojo Quinn,Matt Bryson,Frank Goldie and Dan Burns and I am still here to tell the tale.Happy days,Tradimus Lampada.

*naw looks like your oulder than me, Tojo, who came fae the Vale, had left by the time I arrived although his reputation didnae, seemingly he would swirl the belt above his heid like a helicopter before bringing it doon.

My art teachers were Wright first year and Tottie second, by the time I got tae third I had dropped Art, Music and Languages for a Science/Tech course.

BTW Tottie was brilliant; he also painted the Stations at St Michaels, Mrs TT’s uncle painted the rest of the chapel.

Didnae know wee Toomie lived at Strathleven Place, Milligan the Dentist, who had a surgery in St Mary’s school, Dr Slorach, the Medical Officer of Health for the Royal Burgh, and Tom Harrison of the Cutty Sark/Glencairn fame lived there. My da and his siblings went tae the school that back ontae it St Pats aka McLean Place.

Matt Bryson was the assistant heidie or principal as they call it over here, didnae get Dan Burns, big Froggie Cairns for the first 2 years and then Frank Goldie, Peter’s brother for 3rd year science, also got him for English in second year. Incidentally he lived beside me in Dalvait before I left the country.

I mentioned a story earlier about the gym teacher that posted the Celtic hooligans at Dundee front page on the message board and the older gym teacher covering it with a poster of Johnny Divers labelled school hero, that was big Jake Denniuk (sp)

He was a bully and initially gave my brother a hard time, I had a big uncle who knew Jake and went looking for him one night, possibly Harrisons orMcCaffertys, nae bullying again and he never came near me. Got him for religion one year, it was back tae back with Gym, spent 2 periods playing fitba or if it rained crab fitba

    in the gym.

I make no dig at McGinn – I simply state the various outcomes of Celtic attempting to sign, so-called, Celtic-minded players.

Whatever the reasons that led to McGinn not to sign, & I’m sure outside the of the parties concerned everything is pure speculation – he had the chance to & for his own reasons, passed it up – that is a fact – not a dig!

Does it not pain you that generations of Celtic fans in Scotland, right back to 1888, and all through the Troubles, were British Unionists and it’s only in the last few years that support for Scottish nationalism has become fashionable among some sections of the support?

  9. HIBS or rather, their chairman, pumped Mc Ginns price up from around d 2.2 million to 4 million, for us.Only us.All there in black and white at the time.Maybe not interested ,because it does not suit your agenda, bashing Celtic.PL,and Celtic quite rightly told him where to go,with 4 million, and upped our offer to 2.5 million. Again rejected.Villa came in at the last minute, without a price, and Hibs allowed him to go down look around, and have talks.Take that in for a minute. The result was Hibs accepted a bid,no where near the 4 million, which we then matched.Mc Ginn chose Villa.

Just HTF,are Celtic guilty of not signing Mc Ginn.Pl can be castigated for many things, but not this.

I let you in on a secret that I did not intend to reveal on this forum.

I lurk on Sentinel Celts, however our friend DD, under his other name on SE, posted that he would much prefer Scottish Independence to 10iar – I posted ONCE, & once only, that I found it incredible that a so-called Celtic fan could feel this way.

He has since gone beserk, becoming obsessed by everything and anything I post on CQN.

99% of the time I ignore him – he has pals who jump on his bandwagon – it is orchestrated & oppressive.

Like life in general, I don’t expect everyone to agree with me – indeed I would be worried if they did. But civility costs nothing – the response should be – “I don’t agree with your views…and here are the reasons why” – not constant name-calling and anger.

As someone who posts on both sites,

I think if I had any doubt that JHB was a troll, in the modern sense of the word, then his post at 3.59, confirms it for me.

His post is carefully worded, but it is, and this is me being kind, disingenuous.

JHB can have the last word, on my post, if he chooses, I have a peaceful mind and I intend to keep it that way, well until the next time Celtic play. :-)

  21. And so, it came to pass that the hun tribe from the far west were unhappy. They had no money, little talent and an empty trophy room. This made them very angry, made worse by the fact that the Eastern hordes of Timmy had been so successful, what can we do, they cried.

One of their disciples, Billy Blue suggested they meet in droves at Belly Houston park to ask their maker, why them.

The day came and thousands gathered in the park. They were encouaged t shout in unison, WHY US, WHY US ,WHY US.

Then the loudest clap of thunder was heard in the west, and serious lightning was striking all over. Suddenly, the noise ceased, and a huge booming voice was heard to say, Cos you give me the shits.

    And it came to pass.
