Shane Duffy and space for a project

712

At 6’ 4” and built like the Free Derry Wall in the town he knows so well, Shane Duffy brings experience and assurance to the middle of the Celtic defence.  What would have happened had he been at the club eight days earlier is imponderable.

I don’t know Shane well enough to comment on that question but I am assured by Irish friends he has been an impenetrable leader in their national team for years.  He is at Celtic because his time as first choice at Brighton is over, but he is still only 28, which is the middle of the peak years for many central defenders. We have recruited a player who will be influential in the chase for 10.

The most pleasing aspect of his signature is the tactical shift another central defender gives us towards three at the back.  Surely Shane, Kristoffer and Christopher will all play when fit?  That being the case, I would like to see us add one more central def.: space for ‘a project’.

  1. Played against big Stevie Woods at Gaelic football, when he played for St Pats in the early nineties. He was a formidable opponent. Caught everything in the air, was best not to contend and instead be a pest physically.

  2. Covid19 cases confirmed at my grandchildren’s school Saint Ninians Knightswood and also at Knightswood Secondary too. Unconfirmed cases at two Clydebank schools too. Worryingly close to home. Daughter just texted me to say an outbreak at Blairdardie primary school this morning. Did we open schools too early?

  3. I’ve been scrolling through yesterday’s posts on here and read a couple of suggestions that Calum McGregor should be sold or should only be a squad player. Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggh! I think he’s our best and most important player. Thank you to those posters who have stuck up for CalMac so far. NOT FOR SALE.

  4. Latest item on the Ajax conveyor belt of talent leaves for £Ms. Fans applaud the next step in the career, the club release an official video.

How different to the various reactions to the departure of KT.

I would condemn any abuse the young man received.

And/but I also hope we never have official videos celebrating our homegrown talent leaving Celtic. My head knows the economic realities of football. My heart remains that of an idealist!

From earlier. Didn’t quite get the connection re Andy Murray, until I did. No doubt the company in question is pleased with his progress, we’ll see how he gets on later on this evening. Always had a lot of time for him, good Celtic connections on the Kilsyth side of the family.

  6. With regard to Boli being forgiven, I’m afraid that I’m in a very unforgiving mood at the moment. Never mind the fact that he has disadvantaged the team in that we are two games behind and now have to sandwich them into a very tight schedule which wil see The Bhoys have to play 4 games in 8 or 9 days but on top of that he caused those of us a chance to watch those games on SKY Sports which we have paid for and now when they are to be rescheduled we will miss them again and have to pay around £30 to opposition clubs if we wish to view them. Unforgivable!

Are we seeing a subtle policy of developing herd immunity in UK?

I think we are. Agree with you re pubs.

  9. Pubs are a breeding ground for COVID. Either gross stupidity or insidious strategy by Govts. You decide which.

  10. Big wavy

It’s been said before but it’s an indictment on governments of all parties over the past 30 years that our economy is so heavily dependent on consumption.

  11. Big Wavy

The latter. I think there is a hidden UK government policy to cull the population and try to save the economy.

    Survival of the fittest!

  12. My old Holy Cross latin master (Requiescat in pace) would be proud to know I remembered some of the endless reams of quotes he taught ‘Ad infinitum’. ‘Quid pro quo’ ‘Ars longa, vita brevis.’ ‘ Carpe Diem ‘ He often used to clip me round the ear enunciating the legend ‘You will never make a latin scholar boy, Lacta alea est!’

Oh well no ‘Magna cum laude’ for me on the latin then?

Sturgeon — aka Not-Jacinda — had 8 weeks to prepare for the schools re-opening and she did next to nothing.

She did the right thing in keeping the lockdown going as long as possible but her whole strategy beyond that was shamefully lazy and lacking in energy — she saw the state as passive in all of this which is a bit strange for someone who claims to be a progressive where the state should be active and showing direct leadership rather than standing on the sidelines and lecturing.

She was the figurehead for the wasted test viewpoint — ration testing to those with symptoms — until she got caught up in the care homes shambles where she was shamed into regular testing but forgot to follow up on it and the lazy civil servants did nothing. As I said Not-Jacinda.

Before the schools went back all the teachers and staff should have been regularly tested — they were not and it was an accident waiting to happens. Adults only environments provides some level of social distancing so the asymptomatic have limited opportunities to pass it on.

Schools go back and it becomes a lot less secure with teacher to pupil transmission providing a number of pathways to spread the virus. Primary schools have the issue of viral load being in the same class room for most of the day while in secondary schools pupils might isolate in year groups but they mix with a variety of teachers.

If Sturgeon had half a brain she would have pushed for active preparation — she got lazy and we are now paying the price.

Finally don’t get me started on the ScAmbS taking over the mobile testing units.

Lazy low rent management leading a group of particularly badly dressed bin-men.

No understanding of process flow — just a case of park up / here is a testing kit / DIY swabbing.

Really poor show at a football ground in central Scotland.

    Agree 100%.

We are being led by fools who have become kings and queens.

The cull of the weak in the population is unnofficial policy in USA, UK and Scotland.

We need to open our eyes to what is happening.

    Revolution is the only solution!

  15. do we as a club have any control or say on injured players leaving to join up with their International squads when deemed not fit enough to play at club level , strange, just thinking of OE.

Blow it oot yer erse ya muppet …

If that is all you have got then you better get back over to “Wings over Bath” for reinforcements

The Nats and IndyRef2 is the same dynamic as BoJo and Brexit.

Who cares about reality when we can all wave a flag and sing / shout.

Politics is easy if you can find someone to blame.

    BoJo has Brussels.

    Not-Jacinda has Westminster / England.

As has been proven many times over — nationalism is not a love of your country but a hatred of another.

  17. Good that Shane Duffy was a Celtic Fan.

Kieran Tierney was a big Celtic fan and plays for Arsenal.

John McGinn and his family were all big Celtic men. John plays for Aston Villa.

Brendan Rodgers was a Celtic man. How did that work out?

I remember hearing a while back that Shane/aun’s grandmother was from Letterkenny so a fine continuation of the historical Celtic / Donegal connection.

    Hail Hail.

    hi mate

.just glad he ìs here and is going to wear a Celtic jersey.

I don’t know of his letterkenny connection I would not be surprised if there are.:-)

strong links with the Donegal Glasgow trip as it was often made on the “Derry boat” which left shantallow. in Derry right into the Broomielaw in Glasgow.ach goin off at a tangent, our new signing represents Celtic that covers it :-)

    _______________________________________________________________________________

Yes he does have a granny in Letterkenny she lives in the ‘Burma’ an old part of Letterkenny near the Cathedral. She hung out a massive tricolour out of her window during the European Championships a few years ago, very proud of her grandson!

  19. If we are saying there is space for a project then what about one of our own coming through the ranks?

Reserve team into the first team squad.

Do we think we have one good enough?

McInroy has been present recently and I liked the look of Welsh.

Are the others ever going to get a chance.

So many fringe players that maybe will be needed but with the 10 at stake possibly not to be tried.

A few Dublin schools have had Covid findings since they went back. Dublin is the next county ‘on watch’ for more severe restrictions. Working from home has been ramped up too due to recent rises

i am in Kildare and we have just come out of specific restrictions due to a big spike here (not allowed out the county, restaurants shut again)

pubs opening as pubs is still being delayed and causing a lot of debate. New laws being brought in to hammer pubs who step out of line befpre they can open

you only get 90mins in a restaurant or pub serving food so we are pretty much still way behind Scotland on opening up

my trip to Glasgow for huns game is looking unlikely now if UK stay on banned list (HR might say no; wife might say no!)
