Shane Duffy and space for a project

712

At 6’ 4” and built like the Free Derry Wall in the town he knows so well, Shane Duffy brings experience and assurance to the middle of the Celtic defence.  What would have happened had he been at the club eight days earlier is imponderable.

I don’t know Shane well enough to comment on that question but I am assured by Irish friends he has been an impenetrable leader in their national team for years.  He is at Celtic because his time as first choice at Brighton is over, but he is still only 28, which is the middle of the peak years for many central defenders. We have recruited a player who will be influential in the chase for 10.

The most pleasing aspect of his signature is the tactical shift another central defender gives us towards three at the back.  Surely Shane, Kristoffer and Christopher will all play when fit?  That being the case, I would like to see us add one more central def.: space for ‘a project’.

  1. I remember hearing a while back that Shane/aun’s grandmother was from Letterkenny so a fine continuation of the historical Celtic / Donegal connection.

    Hail Hail.

  2. Will be interesting watching Ireland tomorrow. Stephen Kenny likes the CHs far apart and build from the back. 2 holding MF etc. Very like the Rogers Celtic set up. Says he likes ball moved quickly though and players running on to it, not to feet.

I.e. not the anti football of the last few years

We might see Shane playing in a set up more like Celtic and see how he copes

    hi mate

.just glad he ìs here and is going to wear a Celtic jersey.

I don’t know of his letterkenny connection I would not be surprised if there are.:-)

strong links with the Donegal Glasgow trip as it was often made on the “Derry boat” which left shantallow. in Derry right into the Broomielaw in Glasgow.ach goin off at a tangent, our new signing represents Celtic that covers it :-)

  4. Heard on the news yesterday that the RFU are hoping to have 20,000 at Twickenham for an England international next month. 25% of capacity.

Could see 15,000 at Paradise before Christmas with any luck. A little comfort for our splendid Season ticket holders hopefully.

Sorry. Didn’t mean to mention Christmas. 😉🎄

  8. Good morning from a wet North Staffs – granddaughters first day back at school today – she’s excited but nervous.

International breaks – don’t you just love them :((

  9. Interesting piece in the Daily Record about Richard Gough talking about Paul McStay amongst other old firm rivalries.

Clearly he had a lot of respect for the Maestro and he says Paul was the best player he played against.

    They have remained friends.

He still has his number to this day even though he lives in Australia.

For Scotland he said there was NEVER a club split like what happened in the English side.

All the old firm players got on together brilliantly and never even discussed club stuff.

One very funny thing he said was that when Andy Goram joined Man Utd Roy keane refused to speak to him…….[I did chuckle at that].!!!

    Hail…..Hail Troops…..

Ref “History Teacher” at St Pat’s H.S ( Dumbarton ) – we must be similar vintage – Wee Toomy was my “Reg” and history guru was Bill Doig !

Other teacher “ greats” who passed through St Pat’s gates – Charlie McGarvey / Charlie Docherty / Tam McDonald / Eammon Cullen / Charlie Neeson / Greg Bell / Bill Morrell / Peter Mulheron / Bill Hoey / Matt Bissett and the Ex Celt’s – Johnny Divers & Peter Goldie !

Great to see the many connections with Dumbarton and The Vale when reading CQN – with special mention an even more “mature” vintage contributor in Tontine Tim 👋

    Charlie Mc 👍

    Wow!!

Just catching up on my reading and came across all the St Patrick’s stuff. Brought back great memories.

I remember a picture of “The Huns Invading” on the back wall of Wee Toomy’s classroom. Someone had added an arrow pointing to one of the huns with the description – John Greig.

Nice to see Charlie McGarvey and Matt Bissett named as great teachers. I went through primary and secondary school with Matt/Matthew and Charlie was my best man in December 1975.

  11. Re St Pat’s football.

Bob Doyle from my year had a career in England and played for several teams. Never quite made the top division.

Charlie McGarvey and I were both born in September so were able to drop down from Bob’s age group and play for the year below. Joe McGrogan from our team played for Hamilton.

  13. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Morning all.

Was reflecting last night on our start to the season and actually ended up feeling a little bit sorry for our CEO (incoming !!)

    The following is pure conjecture.

There he was at the start of the season with the plans shaping up quite nicely ….

    – Celtic leading on football’s Covid-19 response : CHECK

    – goalie secured : CHECK

    – striker secured : CHECK

    – Squad in decent enough shape to manage first two rounds of CL qualification : CHECK

    Next Steps

    – work our new players into squad over first five league games

    – get past 2nd qualifying round

    – announce Turnbull

    – announce Duffy

    – integrate the squad further

    – really go for it in 3rd and 4th qualifiers

    Then along came Bolingoli.

    BOOM.

To quote the late 20th century philosopher – Mike Tyson ….

“Everybody has a plan … until they get punched in the mouth”

    🤔

    Hail hail

    Keep The Faith

  14. How about this guy as a project?

    Arbenit Xhemajli

Left footer. 22 y.o. Full international (1 cap for Kosovo) played around 50 games for Neuchatel Xamax.

Likely to be quite raw but maybe a hidden gem. Out of contract too. Sunderland are interested so a low wage punt…

  15. Thanks to all who took the time to read and respond to the foul count / yellow card count .

It is lacking in data re :dissent etc / bad tackles .

The only way to get all the info is to watch every game and record data … I’m not that fussy 😂

What would be more interesting is adding what ref gives out more cards to new club opponents than to new club ..

But it highlights they get less cards than others so they must be more disciplined 🤪🤪🤪🤪

    Tradimus Lampada chat…

Tojo Quinn. Once saw him terrorise a pupil for missing his homework. Out on the floor for the belt

    “Hands up”

    Swing and a miss

“Did you move your hands, cause if you do it again I’m going to double it to 4”

    “Hands up”

    Swing and a miss!!!

Pupil bricking it, tears in his eyes, expecting 8 now…

    “Away and sit down”

And then there was big Jake, barrelling in in his land rover, kids diving out of his road as he made for his customary parking slot

  17. Slabhoy - on the road to 10 on

PS more St Pat’s – Brian McGrain, a classy centre half (late incomer from St Columbus for Highers) was on the school team and went to Celtic. Died of Leukemia before making the first team. Tragic waste. Lovely fella, often highlighted a game by doing an Ajer and dribbling the length of the park before scoring.

  18. If you st pat’s guys don’t stop, I’ll get the holy cross bhoys on…we can be just as boring…
