Shane Duffy and space for a project

712

At 6’ 4” and built like the Free Derry Wall in the town he knows so well, Shane Duffy brings experience and assurance to the middle of the Celtic defence.  What would have happened had he been at the club eight days earlier is imponderable.

I don’t know Shane well enough to comment on that question but I am assured by Irish friends he has been an impenetrable leader in their national team for years.  He is at Celtic because his time as first choice at Brighton is over, but he is still only 28, which is the middle of the peak years for many central defenders. We have recruited a player who will be influential in the chase for 10.

The most pleasing aspect of his signature is the tactical shift another central defender gives us towards three at the back.  Surely Shane, Kristoffer and Christopher will all play when fit?  That being the case, I would like to see us add one more central def.: space for ‘a project’.

i agree that Welsh is the project. Hendry was a project but can’t see him playing again; same with Ralston

  2. The Battered Bunnet on

WBC – Ireland is seeing very similar numbers to Scotland atm, with an average of around 100 new cases reported each day.

If we are saying there is space for a project then what about one of our own coming through the ranks?

    ——————————————————————————————————–

Vol Kennedy and Vol Lennon will have a handle on what’s coming through the ranks alright.

  4. Just how stupid / vacuous is Not-Jacinda?

Seemingly the R number is now above 1 in Scotland ..

No S**t Sherlock — It has been above 1 for the past 3 weeks.

But the R number — it might be bad and getting worse — but it is not important anymore.

The R number is hugely important because it provides an understanding of the anti CoViD19 measures now in place and how they are impacting on the transmission rate of the virus.

Using the analogy of distance / speed / acceleration — the R number is acceleration.

If it is above 1 and continues to stay above 1 then no matter the number of cases this number will always increase. So we need to get the R number down pronto — test baby test are my thoughts.

She really is lazy / low energy / useless walloper — who is now being caught out by her own previous stupidity — some would call them lies but she is not that clever.

She wallowed in the adoration that came from a new case count of 10 or less a day and did nothing to prevent the spikes when the lockdown conditions changed and the schools went back.

Taking your eye of a ball — she has never had her eye on a ball in her life.

  5. DD – I think schools had to open up. Covid rates in Scotland were very low at that point. They’re rising now but that’s more to do with behaviours away from schools…house parties being one of them. If the young yins can start behaving as if there’s a deadly virus out there then schools will stay open. We have to get our lives back to some kind of normality and kids being in school is an essential part of that.

It is a cull of the weak and vulnerable.

    Survival of the fittest.

USA, UK and Scottish Government unofficial policy.

  7. DD – come on. Pubs maybe but there’s a mental health/feelgood factor around going to pubs that a lot of people need. Not me btw, but many do. Again, other than the Aberdeen outbreak there hasn’t been a major outbreak around pubs. It’s about getting a balance – how much can we open up while keeping case numbers relatively low. We’ll never get to zero new cases so bearing that in mind it’s about managing risks.

    Mad Mitch

You missed the second part of the equation: Prevalence.

Where R is the speed you’re travelling at, Prevalence is how far away you are from hitting the Wall. ATM prevalence – the number of current infections – is relatively low, and test positivity remains at around 1%.

Of course should R remain above 1 for long then prevalence will inevitably increase in step. Equally though, this is a social disease spread by human interaction, and our primary defence is our own social behaviour.

Personally, I’d like the entire mobile population tested every week (something of a logistical challenge), failing which I’d like to see more restrictions on movement and more enforcement of restrictions.

-No travel into Scotland without quarantine

-Environmental Health teams spot checking licensed premises

-Mobile monitoring of those isolating/required to isolate

-Public information campaigns focussed on specific groups with group-specific language and messaging.

Oh, and you might consider reining in the invective, it serves only to dilute your points.

  9. C @ 1.06

Fair point — guilty as charged — 47 previous convictions.

    However in my defence …

The SG seems to know a lot about the outbreak but they do not want to share it with the electorate.

All we have is Not-Jacinda throwing out a few snippets every lunchtime.

Not best practice by any stretch of the imagination.

  10. HJ

    Thanks for that.

    My two favourite teams.

Leeds United obviously my second team.

Big season for Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds in EPL this year.

  11. Chavez

    Sorry, I disagree.

I see schoolchildren showing no adherence to social distancing protocols.

The least said about drunks in pubs behaviour the better.

Restoring the economy, matters more than saving lives. Was ever thus.

  12. LENNON, MCGINN & DUFFY

Not a lawyers’ practice shuttling between the Bogside & Long Kesh in the 1970s, nor, an Irish folk group backing up Christy Moore….no, these are so-called self-confessed Celtic supporters, all presented with the chance join their “boyhood club”, in last twenty-years.

Martin wanted & got Neil, who, it is said, took a substantial wage-cut to come to Paradise.

John McGinn was coveted at Hibs by Brendan Rodgers – all the ‘noises-off’ said he was our player. Hibs apparently were playing ‘hardball’, and although we matched a late offer from Aston Villa, McGinn did not come to Celtic Park.

Shane Duffy, on top EPLwages, has been pursued by Neil for some time. Brighton & money were obviously a stumbling block. However, as we now know, Shane pushed hard & coupled with the esteem he was held in by the Brighton chairman, the deal is done & Shane is a Celtic player. He will be huge influence this season – the fans will love one of our own putting his body on the line.

So, let’s sum things – it’s easy really, Neil & Shane wanted to play for Celtic….John McGinn did not, he chose Aston Villa. Peter Lawwell, so often a ‘whipping bhoy’ for a section of our support, was NOT the problem.

  13. weebobbycollins on

I think it’s important schools stay open. My wee grandson has just started school and I’m the one who takes him to and fro…supposedly, I’m in the vulnerable category, so, we shall wait and see…I’ve checked out the school and I am more than happy with the precautions taken…

  14. TBB @ 1.13

    The R number is key.

A pandemic has to start from somewhere.

Prevalence comes from the R number.

It was only mentioned to take the focus away from the rising R number which has happened because Not-Jacinda did not do enough prep before the schools opened back up.

Plus she is using the passive state model to try and control — the outbreak.

The government does as little as possible and lumps everything onto the individual.

If things go pear shaped then it is not the SG’s fault it is our fault.

That perhaps is the point you are making but it is not one I agree with — individual circustances come into play and we as a society are only as strong as our weakest links.

I don’t think you would want to actively segment society to break this chain — I certainly would not/

Consequently a passive state / passive response = Tory policy.

it should not be the Nat policy unless they are surprise / surprise Tartan Tories.

I actually blame the civil servants but the Nats should be asking questions.

    How are you?

I read the other day you mentioning Delaneys Cleland CSC on here.

The pub Kelly’s in Cleland has been bought over and it is being renamed Delaney’s.

  17. DD – schools staying closed has lots of adverse impacts. The poverty/attainment gap widens, kids’ mental health suffers and it affects parents who have to home school or look after younger children, which impairs their ability to work. Meanwhile we should teach the wee buggers to obey the Covid rules!

But we’re in danger of letting the virus destroy everything. Until there’s a vaccine there will be outbreaks – but we can’t shut society down indefinitely. So we manage the outbreaks, we keep an eye on the death rates and we try to muddle through. FWIW I think pubs will close in the autumn or winter but for now they’ve got a lifeline to keep them alive a bit longer.

Incidentally, Berlin had 81 cases yesterday and in Bavaria region there were almost 300 cases – but the perception is that Germany has handled the crisis very well. They have.

You made the error of trolling me on here and on SentinelCelts.

I was brought up to always stand up for myself.

You struck first, so I will retaliate with twice the force you hit me with.

    You are pathetic.

  20. Not sure I’d compare schools reopening with bars.

For a whole myriad of reasons, its important to have kids back in education. No doubt, blended learning will kick in again.

However, bars are more akin to coffee shops and such like.

    No correlation

  21. WEEBOBBYCOLLINS on 3RD SEPTEMBER 2020 1:20 PM

First of all, you were an outstanding player.

Second, you are right about the schools. The best informed doctors, virologists and educationists are all in agreement that continued absence of education will harm our children and the most deprived children will suffer disproportionately.

So far, 8 children under ten in the UK have died of Covid since February Seven of these poor children already had serious underlying conditions. For children at secondary schools the Covid threat is most likely to come from adults working in the schools. The most immediate threat to health for secondary pupils is posed by gatherings outside school. Almost the whole population is likely to recover from Covid but that likelihood decreases for the over-60s.

I don’t think that the original intention of CQN was to create a toxic space for dissident views.

  23. We all can see that Neil has been under a bit of pressure recently & certainly open to valid criticism – however he is Celtic to core – we all that know that.

One extra bonus of the Duffy signing could the bond between the two of them….”brothers in arms”, so to speak – let’s hope so.

Shane, if we can swing it, &, he wants it, could follow in Neil’s footsteps and become an icon at our club.

I am just desperately disappointed that during the next nine months, due to Covid, he may not play in front of us with a 60k attendance.

Many come & many go through the doors at Celtic Park these days, however something tells me this is a very important signing….even it is only for nine months.

A post with which I mainly agree .

What, specifically, is it that so annoys you about this poster? It cannot be just his political views. Was it something personal?

  25. If Shane`s signing is a very real success, I would like to think we will be able to sign him up for proper after this loan spell.
