Celtic released accounts today for the year ending 30 June 2012, a season in which they won the league and exited Europe at the Europa League group stage. Turnover was down less than £1m at £51.34m but bank debt rose £2m to £2.77m despite a £7.37m loss (the difference between the increase in bank debt and the trading loss is due to the amortisation of player registrations, which hits the accounts evenly over the period of a player’s contract).
Football and stadium income dropped by £2m and merchandising dropped by £1m while multimedia and other commercial income rose almost £2m. Football and stadium operating costs rose by over £2m. The drop in stadium revenue and corresponding rise in costs are indicative of the wider economic pressures. Inflation is affecting Celtic’s costs and Celtic fans’ ability to spend with the club.
With debt sitting at around 5% of turnover and a significant uplift in income this season assured, the club is in remarkably rude health this far into an economic downturn. Champions League revenue this season should have a transformational effect on how Celtic can forward plan, potentially reversing that £7m loss.
Economic headwinds are likely to supress key ticket and merchandise revenue for the foreseeable future but Champions League revenues seem immune from these challenges. The primary plan for this season must be to qualify for the group stage of Europe’s top competition next season. Get there and we can continue to operate with the existing cost structures (and more) and still pay our taxes!

Evening peeps, as a user of C67/Celtic TV from it’s inception I find this most interesting, can anyone in the know, tell me if possible what Celtic make from this service anually? Since Setanta fell through, the amount of live video streams has fallen dramatically, guaranteed all SPL games but sometimes they can’t even show video for domestic cup games. No Europa league games were shown last season, and there is no CL games this season.
Is there a UEFA rule that stops clubs streaming CL footy to their fans via subcription or pay per view basis? If there is, its mental cos I’ll see the game online anyhow via the usual free streams?

blooding new players is one thing (not a bad idea given the circumstances) however there are no managers of any club who can survive without some form of feelgood factor. more results like st j could tarnish lennie with an unecessary feelbad factor. a win against benfica would no doubt flood the place with feelgood but give an interesting dilemma – does he persist with changing the first 11 as he has been ?

Celtic have slashed prices for next Tuesday night however I believe that the decision has already been made that only the lower teirs of the stadium will be open.
Now as I have replied to BT fiscal prudence doesn’t seem to be a factor ….how can it be when guys who were attending on a regular basis years ago spend more in the pubs and bookies than they ever would travelling across the city for the game
When you ask around the consensus of opinion seems to be that they are completely bored with the product that is being dished up in Scotland on a weekly basis
I appreciate that a number of contributors on here live overseas and can get get quite excited at the thought of heading home for a holiday and being able to see the Celtic in the flesh
However I can also appreciate the “let’s just stay in the boozer today” fans who are bored shitless watching the the same dross here every week and being expected to give their full support to a guy they know isn’t putting a 100% effort because his minds elsewhere.
Already this season I have been unable to give away a spare ticket for the Hibs game at Celtic Park due to lack of interest
As you will no doubt witness tomorrow night Celtic Park will be full to the rafters and the cost of a ticket and standing areas will not be a factor. What has filled the stadium tomorrow night is the product on offer. You give the fans the right product and they will come flooding back .
Benfica play a 4-1-3-2 which mostly ends up 5 up front. Their strength is out wide but they appear very weak through the centre. Basically need to push on to them and rag doll their centre backs.

Even although Rangers are God’s Team, that doesn’t give them a divine right to just take the field and take the three points. Many a Scottish referee may disagree with that statement. Many have earned the reputation of their careers on that very premise. But even if Jesus Christ as a striker literally performing miracles or John the Baptist was up front alongside big Kevin Kyle we still couldn’t take any game for granted. We cannot afford the luxury of favours from elsewhere that we could so often rely upon in the past. Things have changed for worse in our game. Many dark forces with a green tint have insinuated themselves into the corridors of power. The good old days may return some day. But right now we cannot assume we will win ever game.
But that seems to be the thinking of some players, you would presume, after yet another draw away from home for the Ibrox men. I don’t want to take anything away from Annan Athletic but that result against a diddy team is troubling for fans of the mighty Rangers.
It appears that, away from home, Rangers have a problem competing with the so-called minnows of Scottish football- like a Blue Whale that cannot eat its shrimp- maybe there is something wrong with the Whales mouth? Does the Whale need to see a dentist? Is its gums sore? I don’t know. I cannot pretend to know the answers to such enigmatic questions.
I don’t think Rangers have got to grips with the Third Division yet. Every player of every team in that Division wants to take points off Rangers, not because of the Rangers-hating attitude that infests the bigoted scum amongst the SPL teams, but purely for footballing pride, that they are playing the most famous club side in the world and the greatest institution the world has ever known or ever likely to know. For if Jesus ever did wear that light blue top then even he would be in awe at its wondrous magisterium.
Which all goes back to what I was saying yesterday, that Rangers must recapture that spirit and ethos that makes them world famous i.e. the deranged hunger to compete and the bloody-will-to-win on the field of play. Also, it has to be said, they must develop a killer instinct and ruthless edge, like Ted Bunty when he forgets to take his medication. Brutally ruthless in the manner of the teams when Walter was there- he had that special talent for bringing out the potential hatred that was often untapped in many players before they came to Ibrox. He could make a decent guy a real sneaky cheat and a really sneaky cheat into a cut-throat sociopathic win-at-all-costs maniac in Royal Blue. That is why he is such a great manager.
You could argue that Rangers are being too nice to teams in the Third Division. Maybe because we haven’t been there long enough to make enemies yet or that we haven’t found anything to be offended with so far- but with time that will change. But then maybe they are just a bunch of overpaid, over-rated flops.
That would be a tad harsh, maybe, for folks to say.
But not for Ally McCoist. He should be kicking well-paid backsides from Murray Park to Ibrox and back again until they get the message. Ally deserves better. He has been a true hero in all this and a beacon of hope in the tsunami of bitter hatred that has washed over Ibrox. Some might say that Ally cannot motivate like Walter. Walter could draw hate out of a saint like a blood out of stone. But I’m not one of them.
People keep telling me that Rangers have a team on paper that should skate SFL 3 and SFL 2. The problem is, that games are played on grass, not paper. And that after all is a good thing: could you imagine playing the fast paced professional game on a pitch made out of A4 paper sellotaped together? The paper would just tear up like no ones business even if the ball hardly touched the paper pitch when Rangers were playing to their aerial strengths. Even still, I don’t think there is any future in playing the game on paper.
Life in the lower divisions has a great lesson for Rangers – or any other team – to learn:
Even down here If you want to win, you have to play decent enough to let the ref make sure you get the points.
And to add to the gloom, it appears that David Templeton has been crocked. And Rangers rightly are looking for compensation due to his allergy reaction.
As I blogged previously, Rangers have the players to win the Third Division.
But if they get some injuries they may not have enough of them. And yes that is a good position for Ally to be in, especially in terms of raw material for excuses, as Walter well knows after his tutelage under Walter. Walter knew how to hide behind a panoply of excuses better than any manager I know. But he did it with dignity. Those Marks & Spencers cardigans were like a knights armour when he was in his pomp.
So they need every man and boy in the squad to shoulder their responsibility, roll up their sleeves like soldiers and get into those trenches in the warfare of the Third Division- They must earn the right to wear the Light Blue with pride and dignity and triumphant glory until they mercilessly crush their enemies below their studded jackboots into the finest grist of oblivion.
Step up and dance, gentlemen…and let us falange our rivals under our fandangoing feet.

The Milan fans probably have little interest in watching their club play Anderlecht while Celtic supporters will turn out to watch the Hoops pretty much play against anyone.
Many games in the early stages of the CL are poorly attended with few exceptions with games at CP being one of those exceptions.

I fear the push for reconstruction to aid the TFOD2 towards the SPL may generate a bad case of blowback.
Reconstruction happens to produce a SPL2 including TFOD2.
Would that be a result for the SFA Ludge and their fellow knuckle draggers.
Possibly not as it would come at a very difficult time – transfer embargo et al.
They have a thin squad that will be a year older and year more shop soiled.
Their young players will be ageing prematurely due to overwork.
And then the opposition will be that more capable – instead of teams 33-42 it will be 13-24.
Consequently the SPL2 may come a year too early.
Especially if AMcC is in charge and playing his usual brand of stodge / hit and hope.
