Some background on Ronny Deila

1408

Some perspective first.  Ronny Deila, manager of Norwegian champions Stromsgodset, is not about to be appointed Celtic manager.  He does, meet the criteria, unlike the various one-season wonders cast aside from the English Premier League.  I believe there are two other strong candidates, Ronny has no pre-eminence at this stage, but unlike the various ‘favourites’ who have appeared in recent times, at least he is a genuine possibility.

Stefan Johansen worked under Ronny immediately before joining Celtic, which gave club scouts an insight into the coach’s style of play.  Stromsgodset are predominantly an attacking team, who press high up the field and pass quickly.

His players are dedicated athletes or they don’t remain his players for very long.  He is also one of the game’s intellectuals, a former teacher – and what I’ve been asking for since Neil resigned – a student of the game.  His attitude to his own role is one of continual professional development.

Ronny has a track record of improving players and improving teams.  He is not a brand name, nor a shareholder’s whim.  He is not being considered because he’s ‘pals with Peter and out of a job’.

Please bear in mind………..

Ronny Deila is only one of three genuine contenders Celtic are considering at the moment but all three match the same criteria.  They are intelligent, technically adept, progressive, winners.  Which has made me more excited than any of the names suggested so far.

apparently some folk think the way forward is to sign a manager who

has no CL or big league experience

Okay i do concede that even Liam Brady/lou macari john barnes or Tony Mowbary could probably win the SPFL title this season, so the future looks bright for who ever takes the job, but i cant see how this appointment would put bums on seats, (apart from in the dugout)

  4. Watching that ’86 match, and Maradona’s touch, vision, ball control and football intelligence are a joy to behold, especially when the state of the hard, uneven, ‘bobbly’ pitch is taken into consideration. To score the goal that he did on that pitch, in a game with so much riding on it. . . . Just a wonderful footballer.

  7. By the bye, Carol got things seriously wrong this morning on the Beeb weather forecast. According to her lovely self, we down here were in for a soaking. Haven’t had a spot of rain so far. Plenty of time left, of course.

Would Deila have the recipe for success?

Would Deila be able to spice things up in the SPFL?

Is Deila ‘s partner (if he has one) a dish?

Would Deila set us up to batter our opponents?

Will Deila blanch at the size of our transfer kitty?

Will Deila come out with some half-baked formations?

Would Anthony Worral Thomson be better for us?

    Food for thought?

Fascinating info in your 12.16 link. I think economic factors have as large a part to play in those findings as philosophy (e.g. Hearts being rated high on rearing home:grown players)

The one thing I note is that these sports researchers have the SPFL as a Level 3 league on a par with Norway, Serbia, Poland and Cyprus, and below the Level 2 league status of Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and Romania. I would have liked to have seen the criteria behind that determination.

I think you’re being a wee bit disrespectful. Norwegian football is on a par with Scottish footbal, is it not?

I’d never heard of Victor Wanyama, Lubomir Moravcik or Virgil Van Dijk before they signed. They turned out pretty good. Had you heard of Wim Jansen or Jo Venglos before they came along?

All good managers have to start somewhere. Martin O’ Neill at Wycombe, Alex Ferguson at East Stirling and St Mirren, Jurgen Klopp at Mainz. You get the drift.

Deila has served a good apprenticeship in Norway’s top league and seems to me a better candidate than Coyle, McNamara, McKay, Keane (bullet dodged) and various others mentioned in recent weeks.

We’re not going to get Guardiola, Ancelotti or Pellegrini.

I say let’s give someone like Deila a go. A young, hungry head coach with a proven track record who is ready to go to the next level.
