Some reasons why Celtic will drop a lot of points

960

I was surprised Ronny Deila thought immediately after the game that Dedryck Boyata’s red card was valid, from the angle behind the goal it looked a well-time tackle, but let’s deal with the manager’s complaint against the player, who put a challenge in when wrong side of the attacker.

We’ve see three Celtic central defenders in this position in recent weeks: Efe against Ross County, Erik against Inverness and Dedryck last night. Erik was outpaced by Jordan Roberts but instead of risking a challenge from behind his opponent, he stayed on his feet and forced Roberts to shoot under pressure. Efe clumsily barged into his opponent and Dedryck went to ground.

All three got their starting positions wrong, which could have cost a goal, but Ambrose and Boyata compounded the problem by attempting a recovery, also from a wrong position. Sviatchenko chose to put pressure on the player and leave matters up to his goalkeeper. Erik made the right decision, Efe and Dedryck made wrong decisions.

And before Erik relaxes in the glow of praise, it was his unnecessary barge into an opponent which conceded the foul which led to the corner kick Accies equalised through. Don’t give away stupid fouls and you don’t allow opponents to fire the ball into your box.

And yes, the goal we lost came from a corner kick (I’m assuming those who were animated earlier in the season about zonal marking somehow overlook the same lack of ball-winning skills from the same players now we’re marking man-for-man). I’ve never known a team to lose so many goals from corners. We have a collection of players who cannot follow the flight of a football when launched into their box from a corner.

I know there’s a belief that you cannot practice penalty kicks, as the pressure of hitting them during a match changes everything. This is nonsense. Our poor penalty conversion rate over the last five or six years has cost us trophies. Ironically, John Collins has the best penalty conversion rate of any player in Celtic history (who’s taken more than 5).  You would think he’d be able to sort this.

Poor technique is a consequence of poor preparation.

When Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring from the penalty spot it came as a great relief, as until then we were unable to create a genuine chance. A big part of the job at Celtic is breaking down packed defences away from home. There are largely two ways to achieve this:

1. Master the act of quick and precise passing

2. Have target men and wide players who are excellent at crossing the ball.

If we don’t have either play in our locker we’re going to drop a lot of points.

I was talking to H’s da earlier about it and I’ve just heard DG’s version. They both think that Joe Miller was overly critical and didn’t have a good word to say about anything Celtic related.

“I also judge Celtic teams on how they react to adversity, some not all of our past teams had a strong mentality about them and you knew they would fight their way back. This team sadly is one of the weakest mentally and physically I have witnessed in my 50 years of watching this very special club , I wouldn’t bet a penny on this current team coming back against anyone if they went behind. Belief and motivation is instilled by the coaching staff to ensure players can handle setbacks and IMHO they have failed miserably in that regard.”

    So far this season

    Stjarnan 1 Celtic 4

    Celtic 3 St. Johnstone 1

Hamilton 1 Celtic 2 – the same fixture in late August

    Fenerbache 1 Celtic 1

There have been several other fixtures where we have been pegged back to level and gone ahead again.

It is not as rare as you think.

Weakest in 50 years sounds like hyperbole to me.

  4. Final post of the weekend – we’re not down – we’re just down in the dumps – we could have fourteen games left – let’s hope we can enjoy them – win them and then sort ourselves out for next season HH

When we went 2-1 behind at Hampden against Ross County, did you think we’d come back and win?

Disappointing in that case, that a considerable fee is paid to someone who then is overly critical of the club. Helens Dad is a man of great integrity and a good judge of character( most of the time) I am happy to accept his opinion. D.G. is clued up too. I guess Joe won’t be getting invited back.

“The thing I like about Spanish football apart from the skill level. They have the best health and safety officer’s in the game.”

Ah the old elf and safety again. It definately has a place, but not on the football pitch.

Since I have lost my marbles visiting Elgin my thoughts about possible HSE involvement in footie :-

Hats and onsies must be worn at all times to prevent any UV rays.

There will be no playing in the rain as it constitutes a slip and trip hazard.

Players must wear goggles at all times to prevent potential eye injuries from flying moths etc.

The ball must be made of polyester to prevent striking injury.

Running will be banned except in exceptional circumstances to prevent players falling and twisting their ankles.

Crossbars will be removed in due course to prevent potential dropped objects, however to mitigate until removal, all players must wear hardhats.

Football boots must have steel toecaps and meet EU criteria.

The game will now consist of 3 x 30 minute periods as 45 minutes is deemed too long without a break in adverse weather.

Any player leaving the ground, eg jumping to head the ball will be subject to full” working at height” legislation.

A permit to play must be signed by all players. Subs must also sign prior to entering the field of play.

COSHH certification must be in place for Spit.

A hazard assessment of the pitch must be in place in case of ground disturbance.

Shinguards must be worn to include the lower and upper body.

    Etc, Etc Etc.

Taxi called and I wish you goodnight my friends in Celtic.

  8. SFTB

Indeed, I’ve seen the same. The current team lacks the heart and the tactical nous to come back from such setbacks. That is a major concern for me.

  9. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Hamiltontim, I was at the agm yesterday.

It was good to be there.

It was interesting hearing how little influence ordinary shareholders have within the club.

  10. HT

I gave 4 instances and a few left out, where we did come back

The one I cited, where I shared your concern was an exceptional one for me- the one occasion where I lacked that expectation, for purely objective reasons, that I have rarely seen 10 men triumph there if they were reduced to 10 early in a game.

There is no objective evidence that we come back more often or less often than teams previous but, it remains a widespread belief.

You will remember the chat people were having at CQN corner prior to our matches against Ross Co. and ICT. Many people were saying the same- if we struggle today and are level or a goal behind, they would have no confidence that we would win or get back on level terms. But we did struggle and we did win.

Contrast that to the predictions about the Aberdeen results in recent weeks. The view was that Aberdeen would not drop points till we played them again. Anyone saying different was a blind-faith happy clapper. Our support is so grumpy now that we fear other teams and fear for our own. As it happened, Aberdeen scraped a 7 goal thriller, lost 3:1 to ICT and drew yesterday.

The confidence in Aberdeen was misplaced and the fear about us was, largely misplaced. In the same Feb. period after they beat us, we have won 3 and dropped points for the first time yesterday. In contrast, they have one win one draw and a defeat.

I would not like to risk any of my own money on backing the gloomy prognostications of the Celtic support just now.

  11. Dallas Dallas – I always look to the past and what used to happen, the following quotes are interesting (well to me anyway)

The stadium had to be rebuilt and people were saying why don’t you just buy the players Fergus? We’ll stand in the mud. But the stadium was a tool. We had to have a season-ticket base. Jack McGinn [board member] was saying, “We don’t want season-ticket holders, they are nothing but trouble.” Well, I just couldn’t live with that marketing philosophy at all.The answer is that you have got to fill the park. The average crowd was 28,000 and we built a 60,000- seat stadium. How smart was that? Well, it was the right thing to do.”

Fergus McCann highlights Jack McGinn’s comment, and illustrates why the old board members’ mentality and why they weren’t good enough to manage the club

And the following from two ex-celts…guess who they are?

“He saw me as no different from the groundsman or the head chef.”

“My initial impression of Fergus was that he was a nasty wee chap, and I think I had a good reason.”

No matter who is the owner, managers, player…everyone has their own opinion and it is usually unshakeable. It can sometimes be influenced by continual bombardment via SMSM/timternet. But the seed is born in the individual and they will seek affirmation of that belief from whatever source.

    Twas always thus.

  12. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Art of War, I hope you have had an enjoyable weekend.

I’m assuming the quotes were from Luigi and Charlie Nicholas?

  13. jude2005 is Neil Lennon \o/ on

I wonder when Ronny will pass comment on Boyatas passing skills or the lack of them!!!

  14. Dallas- 50% correct!

Yep mate, quiet weekend with a lot of foot slogging due to spring weather.

Now enjoying a few before ‘living the dream’ tomorrow. It’s gonna be a tough week.

I trust you’ve also had a chilled time…well after Friday night at any rate :-)

  15. HT

Must have just missed you today, i played the Eden Course. What a day! Great place, love it up there!

  16. Watched both the Man Utd and Liverpool (see what I did their!) games today and saw something that I could not explain.

Centre halfs had more than 1 out ball.

    Strikers ran into space.

    Midfielders passed and moved.

    All this happened

    REPEATEDLY

    all fecking game.

people run into space to get the ball. but not just that. everyone in front of the ball did it.

    all game long???

might catch on up here sometime (RD regardless of system all the above is a pre-requisite)

  17. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Art of war, enjoy the beer.

I was in the pleasure dome today. It was the calm before the storm.

Andy the winker making a negative comment about us, never.

I’m sure Nicholas had mouthed off also about Fergus.

The second half of the Lyon PSG game has been very good. PSG are not looking happy at having to come back being 2 down. Ibra , in particular, not at the races.

Lyon win 2 1 without their strongest team out.

  18. Dallas

Apologies I’m in the middle of planning and corrections. I really wish you’d introduced yourself mate. You can possibly guess which one I was!

  19. Whatever anyone says, Ronny has been brave in saying what he said after the game, if he intends to be the Celtic Manager.

He done it early doors in his Celtic career and got the team working harder, initially anyway.

tbj is right, the Kids are the future, get them in now.

  20. PETEC

Brave would be shouting about the non yellow card issued at the penalty (5 mins after the ref spoke to him about persistent fouling)

Brave would be highlighting the targeting of KT

Brave would have been highllghting McKinnons studs up tackle 3 foot in the air after the shocker on KT

What RD done was far from brave and I hope that the dressing room reminds him of this

The interview I saw was weak and cowardly and hung out the bhoy to dry (after he won the ball)

  21. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Hamiltontim, the price you pay for your night away in St Andrews. Lol.

I wanted to spare you my havering, its bad enough for those who post on the blog.

I enjoyed the meeting, a few things mentioned I wasn’t aware of with regard to the OB act and the point about ordinary shareholders’ lack of influence.

Bedtime for me,good night all and sleep well.

  22. I saw it as well Clunks. It got me angry. The attack on Kieran should have been foremost in his mind, he should have highlighted that, more than anything else.

We are all idealists, but this cheating vermin drag us back.

Tony Mowbray gave up ASAP when he seen the game was rigged, and still ThompsHun is Equalising. Ronny D is, I hope Stronger, made from stronger material.

    Who knows?

  23. SFTB

Statistics will, and can, be used to support any argument as you well know.

I watch this Celtic team every week. It’s only my belief but I think they lack heart and they lack proper coaching in things we’d assume are basics.

Now, there are regulars who’ll disagree but there opinion is no more or less valid than mine.

How do you think Ronny would have coped as a man and as a manager in the dark days of the ’90s against a financially doped Hun team?

It’s just my opinion, but he lacks the strength of character required to tackle the media in Scotland and he lacks the tactical nous to cut it as a top manager.

  24. Dallas

I could have told dozens of more stories related to the OBaF Act. You’ll be thankful I didn’t!

  25. Anytime we see a rigged game we gotta ask who gains and why

    ..

Scotland is a 3 horse race, Celtic, huns and SFA

SFA easy to see what they gain and why

    Rangers, see above

Struggling to see why our board would sell us up the river

    Unless……

  26. HT

“Statistics will, and can, be used to support any argument as you well know.”

Stats can be used well and can be used badly. If the contention was right that this team, going behind, is less resilient than previous teams, it would be relatively easy to demonstrate. You would just have to show the relative number of times that they came back from a deficit, in comparison. I have seen no such stats.

As for, how would Ronny have done in the 90s, well he was 15 at the start of the decade and just 22 when we stopped their 10, so he might have been a bit young for the job :-)

Plus, there are no stats on a hypothetical event :-)

  27. HT, until Friday night I would have argued against your opinion.

But throwing Boyata under a bus was so poor, as a man manager, Ronny doesn’t have it.

How can Boyata, or any other players trust Ronny to have their back in a pinch?

    I wouldn’t.

  28. clunks,

I have no idea what Ronny D is going through, right noo.

So I will not criticise him.

You and I have no idea if he is being Uber Brave or stupid, Clever or what not.

I know he will be feeling a lot lonelier now in Celticsville, not right that.
