Some reasons why Celtic will drop a lot of points

960

I was surprised Ronny Deila thought immediately after the game that Dedryck Boyata’s red card was valid, from the angle behind the goal it looked a well-time tackle, but let’s deal with the manager’s complaint against the player, who put a challenge in when wrong side of the attacker.

We’ve see three Celtic central defenders in this position in recent weeks: Efe against Ross County, Erik against Inverness and Dedryck last night. Erik was outpaced by Jordan Roberts but instead of risking a challenge from behind his opponent, he stayed on his feet and forced Roberts to shoot under pressure. Efe clumsily barged into his opponent and Dedryck went to ground.

All three got their starting positions wrong, which could have cost a goal, but Ambrose and Boyata compounded the problem by attempting a recovery, also from a wrong position. Sviatchenko chose to put pressure on the player and leave matters up to his goalkeeper. Erik made the right decision, Efe and Dedryck made wrong decisions.

And before Erik relaxes in the glow of praise, it was his unnecessary barge into an opponent which conceded the foul which led to the corner kick Accies equalised through. Don’t give away stupid fouls and you don’t allow opponents to fire the ball into your box.

And yes, the goal we lost came from a corner kick (I’m assuming those who were animated earlier in the season about zonal marking somehow overlook the same lack of ball-winning skills from the same players now we’re marking man-for-man). I’ve never known a team to lose so many goals from corners. We have a collection of players who cannot follow the flight of a football when launched into their box from a corner.

I know there’s a belief that you cannot practice penalty kicks, as the pressure of hitting them during a match changes everything. This is nonsense. Our poor penalty conversion rate over the last five or six years has cost us trophies. Ironically, John Collins has the best penalty conversion rate of any player in Celtic history (who’s taken more than 5).  You would think he’d be able to sort this.

Poor technique is a consequence of poor preparation.

When Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring from the penalty spot it came as a great relief, as until then we were unable to create a genuine chance. A big part of the job at Celtic is breaking down packed defences away from home. There are largely two ways to achieve this:

1. Master the act of quick and precise passing

2. Have target men and wide players who are excellent at crossing the ball.

If we don’t have either play in our locker we’re going to drop a lot of points.

    Indeed :-)

Ok, honestly, how do you rate him against previous Celtic managers and how do you think he’ll fair against European opposition if he’s kept on next season?

As the manager of a professional football team his comments were shocking.

I don’t know if he’d lost the dressing room previously, as has been claimed, but I’d guess that he has now.

Ronnys statement to bt after the match has effectively ruled out any appeal against boyatas red card .

He should be disciplined by the club as most employees woutd

If Boyata had put in an over the top tackle, stuck the head on someone or god forbid cantona’ed someone in the crowd then I can understand his comments.

The dressing room will surely revolt over this. We as a support can see the comment was wrong and we dont have to go to work tomorrow and work with the guy…………….

Players before this we heard that were not happy were Commons (national TV revolt!!), Mulgrew (walked off with and ‘injury’), Stokes (punted), Brown (not trying), have i missed anyone?

I’m operating on the belief that Ronny is here til the summer. I’m behind him and the team until then. After that I’m behind the team only.

  8. clunks,

How can I possibly argue about that?

I am hoping and hoping he is the next Jock.

    Hope Always in yer Heart.

Patience is always a virtue, I see a less pressing game this season from last. Players/Seniors?

Get those Young Celtic educated players in ASAP. It may be too late now, how MONsoon is now?

  9. Clunks, I was trying to look at it from a players point of view.

I wouldn’t want Ronny going into a press conference where he should be defending me from media attacks.

I certainly wouldn’t trust the outcome if he did.

I had bought into what he was doing, managers always get better when they leave, Lenny and WGS were slated at various times when they managed the Club, those times seem to be forgotten.

I could see Ronny bringing in young players, I thought he was building something.

He may have broken the trust he had built up.

Is that like saying I got diarrhea this week and it would be stupid to wait till next week till the docs open to sort it?

Surely it would be easier to go to the shops and get something to fix it?

Or should we wait till 2 weeks before the biggest game of our season to fix the problem??

If there is a problem fix it now, to wait 3 months is stupid

If I messed up in the current media climate I would respect my boss if he deflected the question and then bollocked me in private or in the group.

Boyata goes into training on monday and asks the boss if he got the ball? Then asks him WTF he hung him out to dry?? The rest of the players back him, as they must.

This is the players point of view? Your boss just hung you out to dry, nationally and got it wrong and now you have to go to work and not smash him for it?

    Glasgow Celtic is Good.

Who knows what is going to be the upshot of Ronny Deila ‘throwing DB under the Bus’.

  15. eddieinkirkmichael on

Give the MIB in Scotland any excuse to send off a Celtic player and they will grab it with both Masonic hands. Boyata didn’t need to make that challenge yet he chose to do so and gave the ref what he wanted.

To have a go at Ronny for not sticking up for someone who made a stupid decision that probably cost us the 3 points is a bit naff to put it mildly.

Getting yourself sent off for a stupid tackle is stupid and is indefensible IMHO. Ronny’s lack of support for the player is telling for me and probably signals his lack of faith in his overall ability. I think we can be fairly certain Boyata wasn’t a Ronny pick, probably more to do with PL’s son or John Park.

  16. Sftb

“Weakest in 50 years sounds like hyperbole to me.”

I never actually said that, you missed a crucial word, i did say “ONE of the weakest” and in the context of mental and physical toughness of this current team I stand by that opinion.

  17. Eddie

Get where your coming from but the fact is and cannot be deflected it was a fair tackle.

That is where RD must make his media statement. This is where RD must push the media to highlight, then push it towards the repeated fouls and lack of cards against our players. He must see it, it MUST anger him, as it angers us.

Boyata put in a fair tackle and the ref got it wrong. He must have the bollocks to say it and not bend over and take one for the masonic team.

we must back our team up. repeated kicks and no yellow cards must be highlighted. We cannot take this lying down?

  18. eddieinkirkmichael,

I’m glad Ronny is looking at only his own players flaws, Ronny has never made excuses.

I loved big Sutton mauling the rewriting of the rule book in the studio.

Get the 2000s in the team. ;))

My belief is we are too far in to the season to change .. Also there is no apparent Board appetite to do so. My belief is that he is here until summer not my wish. 5 IAR all that matters so got to get behind Ronny and the team.

Ther will be time enough for talking when the dealing’s done as Kenny Rogers once said..

  22. Eddieinkirkmichael

I was annoyed with Ronny for letting the ref off the hook, he stated quite clearly that Boyata never touched the ball when in fact he did which immediately made the sending off open to debate and interpretation whether it was a well timed tackle Chris Sutton and the match commentator thought so. Surely to god at least one of the coaching staff got word that Boyata got a touch on the ball before giving any post match interviews. This was compounded by Ronny not taking the opportunity to question the legitimacy of the two tackles dished out by McKinnon which in at least one of them went in with full intent to cause injury.

  23. I wish we had an arrogant w@nk like mourinho as the boss

He would take no prisoners in the media round up after the game.

Week after week he would call the bollocks out for what it is! He would get banned so much and the media would write so much about him it would be a national disgrace.

I say it again if we have a cancer then cut it out before it destroys us. Why wait 3 months to do so.

We have all came to the same conclusion, that he is donald ducked, so why wait. Punt him and get a new guy in. Only in football would it make sense to hold onto a bad asset………….

  24. Cults

With the greatest of respect that is nonsense.

Bin him now and get the new boss time to bed in.

Why wait until the end of the season and with pre season etc he has about 2 weeks to prepare the team for the most important game of our season.

Wait for 3 months and let the team destroy itself.

What you said makes no sense at all.

    If its wrong fix it.

    Fix it quick!

Dont wait for another 3 months, thats just stupid

Re JJ’S latest blog where it’s nice to see him getting out the word we are already familiar with but keeping him right.

“The fact that Campbell Ogilvie was appointed as chairman of the SFA,  one week prior to the 31st March deadline,”

I’m not sure if this is accurate.

However CO was elected as President of SFA in early June 2011 and he,and Andrew Dickson who sat on the Licensing Committee and whom Regan did consult in December 2011 before asking RFC to clear a statement to “clarify” the point the bill crystallised, that led to meeting Ogilvie and Regan at Hotel de Ville , were both, as you correctly infer, in a position (especially Dickson from 31st March when Licensing decision had to be made) to influence the treatment of a very tricky issue.

The devil as ever is in the detail.

Dickson for example was guy in charge of players files from 2004 according to his testimony to the FTT, the files that MIH told HMRC did not contain the side letters to De Boer and Flo in 2005.

    Close but no cigar. ;)

  27. Not wanting to fall out with anyone, and most guys on here who want RD to stay,I totally respect their support for him,but I have 3 questions

    1) Are we a better team than 12 months ago?

2)Why are there around 25-28,000 at home games now?

    3) Would you trust RD in the CLQs,given his record in European games?

    No.

I think the older wans cannae change their ways, and it is a big problem.

    Depends.

  30. Auldheid-Duffield’s posts at Hampden and Ibrox in very quick succession is well worth a look at too IMO

  31. Contrast Sutton defending Boyata against Craigen and McDonald versus Deilas putting the boot in to a young player on a question from a junior reporter.

Sutton stood up to aggressive Craigen and the slimey McDonald with a full defence of the Celtic player. Sutton could have kept quiet or went with flow. No he did the decent thing and straight batted the emotion and bile from Craigen and McDonald.

Deila on the other hand couldn’t wait to put the boot into Boyata and pat Craig Thomson on the back.

As supporters we know Deila has failed miserably to defend his player. The dressing will have zero respect for him now. When the chips are down the players ain’t going to put in the effort for Deila. They owe him zilch and they have seen how he supports them.

Deila is burnt now with the supporters and the players and the sooner he goes the better. John Collins can take the team until a new manager is appointed in the summer. Ronny can go back to fjords where he belongs.

  32. Lucky Cody

    feck yes!

Burn him and now before the players do.

Put JC in charge until the right man (just for you Martybhoy!!) becomes available

Does that sound like too much common sense?
