SPL threat effectively terminates football in Scotland

1889

Yesterday evening STV revealed the real outcome of last week’s meeting between Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir as a proverbial gun was put to the head of Scottish Football League clubs.

In short, SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, no doubt with the support of some clubs but without the prior knowledge or support of Celtic, has threatened to kick 20 SFL clubs out of the senior game unless they acquiesce to his demand to parachute Sevco into the First Division.

The proposal was presented by SFL chief executive, David Longmuir, and appears to carry his endorsement.

Five scenarios are portrayed:

‘Rangers’ remaining in the SPL is dismissed as SPL clubs have confirmed they will vote no.

‘Rangers’ going to the third division is objected to on two grounds, financial (which is laboured a bit) and – wait for it – “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

Ponder that one for a moment, “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

‘Rangers’ to the First Division is presented as being “financially possible to recover from this scenario”.

‘Rangers’ to SPL2 is dismissed as apparently this would create “a bigger divide” than moving ‘Rangers’ to the First Division but not changing the name of the league.  It is also noted that a legal challenge could bring paralysis.

Finally, they discuss ‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended, which apparently would lead to “complete financial meltdown”.

Then come the inducements to co-opt ‘Rangers’ into the First Division…. cash, your cash.  Lots and lots of your cash, an “immediate cash benefit for all 30 clubs!”  The exclamation mark is theirs!!

We could spend all day dissecting this disgraceful document but I’d like to focus on one immediate element:

‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended – complete financial meltdown.

So how do the SFA, SFL and the SPL rogues who participated in this shambles propose to ensure the SFA Independent Judicial Panel does not suspend ‘Rangers’ for subverting our game for over a decade for fielding illegally registered players for that period?

In short, it cannot.  The independent judicial process will itself need to be subverted.  As I suggested a few days ago, the judges will be told they are no longer wanted, we are back with the hand-selected SFA committee men.

The three most senior executives running our game have told you that one errant club is so powerful it cannot be subject to the rules and must not face the punishments which are due.

I’m not going to dispute the validity of this view (just now), but surely we deserve some honesty? If the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Premier League has accepted the ‘game’ is over, let’s hear from them. Where is the leadership from the SFA president on the collapse of the game under his watch? What are the chief executives saying to their paying customers?

Our sport cannot be subverted below radar.

You have been cheated and the rules will be changed to ensure there are no consequences.  This is no longer a sport, it is a financial accommodation where a few executives are threatening to expel 20 clubs, most of whom have over a century history in the senior game, to allow Sevco to start two divisions higher than they otherwise would.

Celtic can have nothing to do with this.

The game here is dead. The leagues are set to collapse, most likely, no matter what happens now.

“… those who want to refer to new Rangers as Sevco, are just Celtic fans who hate Rangers”

I actually feel a bit sorry for this guy, as i’m old enough to remember when he was widely regarded as a serious impartial and courageous sports journalist.

Now that he has been cast adrift by the heavy weight press, he now scrapes a living pedalling the same old guff where ever he can, which he himself would have mocked, only a few years ago. Such a shame that he misses a once in a lifetime opportunity for a sport journalist to be shining an unbiased light in the current darkness of all things RFC.

Step up Mr Spiers and follow the example of messers Daly, Thomson, Spence and Cosgrove.

Excellent post ……. Always remember the main requirement …..FAIRNESS … With THE gone, we will see the restoration of integrity into our game

Canamalar…… You need to lighten up, and so does anyone who criticises you for not buying a ST on principle ……I haven’t been to an away game in 20 years, on principle (will be going back to them next season now)

We are in the birth of a new era where we need to maximise season tickets, so, hopefully, you will now renew, since the O.. F… Will never be mentioned again…….I wasn’t at all happy about the joint sponsorship either

So, Falkirk, Raith, Livingston, Peterhead, Morton, Dunfermline and Clyde all say No to Sevco. The humiliation of SFA is almost complete.

Ooops. Apologies for the embarrassment caused to Hamilton Accies for excluding them from the No to Sevco heroes. Thanks all for the heads up

    MDW,

is the gree brigade thing meant to prove anything (question mark button knackered)

If you go back through my post, you’ll see I stoped buying my season ticket while they like most were happy to be considered old firm by the board.

I read the conversation the next morning. Unless I missed something it entailed BJmac asking if you had change your position on renewing your season book and your replying that you have still to consider your position. BJmac then alluded that given the position of the SPL clubs there were no further obstacles or reasons as to why you should not renew to which you stated was a decision you would leave until its all finalised and confirmed (which IMO is your right and a position I would be more aligned with of it wasn’t for my wee Bhoy being desperate to get back to CP).

I’ll admit I do not remember BJmac make a statement with regards your mental status until after your analogy highlighting alcoholism. Given BJmacs very public admittance of his issues with alcohol and his ongoing battle with it I firmly believe your analogy was a step to far. If he did make a statement prior to your analogy then he too was in the wrong and should also be offsetting an apology for that but as I was reading through feel it was an angry reaction to your analogy. Also, even if it was made prior to your analogy, although misplaced I don’t believe that you have ever stated publically on CQN that you have issues with mental illness and therefor if something was said it would not have been a personal attack directed at an issue you, knowingly, had to struggle with daily.

Just my opinion. I know you have strong opinions, many of which I agree with and some of which I don’t, but on this occassion I feel you crossed the line with a fellow Celt. As I say. Just my opinion.

    Heaven67,

as I have said a few times, I will renew when Im satisfied the board have acted honourably, I’m no sure how I will measure that as I see no evidence they have done anything.

I firmly believe everything we are now witnessing is the result of supporter action and threatened action.

As I said no sure how I will judge, but I expect to see enough soon, one way or the other.

Until then I have my opinins and principals.

I tend to ignore your posts, I find it better that way.

However when you abuse very good Celtic men, like BJMac, just because their viewpoint differs from you then I do wonder what motivates you.

I have never, not once, tried to have you removed from the site at any time.

I am 100 percent pro democracy and free speech.

Anyone who has ever spoken to me will struggle to understand your statement re my alleged (declaration that hundead tax evasion was not a profound issue).

When did I make such a declaration?

I have no idea what thought processes you employ.

I do know that your intimidatory assertions are not the musings of a wholesome Celtic man that I would wish to acquaint.

May therefore ask you to accept that in future I wish to have no further correspondence with yourself and would respectfully ask from using my name on this very fine blog.

    MDW,

ok you obviously pay quite a lot of attention to bjmac, I stopped a long time ago, when him and the peewee supportes assoc decided tax evasion was not a profound question.

I had no idea about his personal demons, and if anyrthing it makes my point more pertinent, because if he is seeking help, then he will know exactly where that analogy comes from and it is one of the lessons in self help for spoting the signs.

As harsh as this might sound, the analogy is bang on for everyone who deludes themelves that their responsibility for selfharming can somehow be shared.

Now your last post still didnt have an apology so I take you believe my intention was purely to tease him about alchoholism.

The whole thing wasabout me maneouvering him into posion so I couldslag his alchoholism, his opening volleys and dismissal of my principals and allegance was all a strategy, Jeez I’m good eh, ffs mhan think about what your saying.

canamalar is machiavelli, morelike macavenie get a grip.

  12. Looks like Phil Mac Giolla Bhain got it right again. Alex Thomson has been tweeting that his mole at the SFA admits Rangers shouldnt have been playing football at all last season since they didnt meet financial criteria. I seem to remember the mainstream media (Darryl King in particular) rubbishing Phil’s claims that this was a newsworthy story worth pursuing last year. Hardly anyone supported Phil’s position at the time (even amongst the Celtic support there were few takers). The only disappointing thing was after a brief flurry of activity Phil seemed to let the matter slide. In the fullness of time it should still be seen as a great scoop. Well done Phil kudos to you. To the doubters GIRUY.
