SPL threat effectively terminates football in Scotland

1889

Yesterday evening STV revealed the real outcome of last week’s meeting between Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir as a proverbial gun was put to the head of Scottish Football League clubs.

In short, SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, no doubt with the support of some clubs but without the prior knowledge or support of Celtic, has threatened to kick 20 SFL clubs out of the senior game unless they acquiesce to his demand to parachute Sevco into the First Division.

The proposal was presented by SFL chief executive, David Longmuir, and appears to carry his endorsement.

Five scenarios are portrayed:

‘Rangers’ remaining in the SPL is dismissed as SPL clubs have confirmed they will vote no.

‘Rangers’ going to the third division is objected to on two grounds, financial (which is laboured a bit) and – wait for it – “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

Ponder that one for a moment, “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

‘Rangers’ to the First Division is presented as being “financially possible to recover from this scenario”.

‘Rangers’ to SPL2 is dismissed as apparently this would create “a bigger divide” than moving ‘Rangers’ to the First Division but not changing the name of the league.  It is also noted that a legal challenge could bring paralysis.

Finally, they discuss ‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended, which apparently would lead to “complete financial meltdown”.

Then come the inducements to co-opt ‘Rangers’ into the First Division…. cash, your cash.  Lots and lots of your cash, an “immediate cash benefit for all 30 clubs!”  The exclamation mark is theirs!!

We could spend all day dissecting this disgraceful document but I’d like to focus on one immediate element:

‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended – complete financial meltdown.

So how do the SFA, SFL and the SPL rogues who participated in this shambles propose to ensure the SFA Independent Judicial Panel does not suspend ‘Rangers’ for subverting our game for over a decade for fielding illegally registered players for that period?

In short, it cannot.  The independent judicial process will itself need to be subverted.  As I suggested a few days ago, the judges will be told they are no longer wanted, we are back with the hand-selected SFA committee men.

The three most senior executives running our game have told you that one errant club is so powerful it cannot be subject to the rules and must not face the punishments which are due.

I’m not going to dispute the validity of this view (just now), but surely we deserve some honesty? If the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Premier League has accepted the ‘game’ is over, let’s hear from them. Where is the leadership from the SFA president on the collapse of the game under his watch? What are the chief executives saying to their paying customers?

Our sport cannot be subverted below radar.

You have been cheated and the rules will be changed to ensure there are no consequences.  This is no longer a sport, it is a financial accommodation where a few executives are threatening to expel 20 clubs, most of whom have over a century history in the senior game, to allow Sevco to start two divisions higher than they otherwise would.

Celtic can have nothing to do with this.

The game here is dead. The leagues are set to collapse, most likely, no matter what happens now.

I have to disagree here Awe_Naw, the motivation for saying no to Newco seems to be integrity. Clyde for example, how can they hope to gain financially from Celtic?

The nonsensical proposal from the SPL/SFA on Friday was one of the stupidest episodes in this saga. But the clubs have come out to immediately object to it, already 7 SFL clubs according to Sportsound, this kills the proposal dead before its had time to gain momentum.

Now when league construction can be done, fairly with consideration for 2013/14 clubs may ask for a bigger share, as I say I think they will ask for more than we want to give, that’s negotiation. We are in a very strong position, we need to be seen to be fair, replacing one bully with another wouldn’t take us forward. Some things, TV money, sponsorship money, ie the collective pool should be shared equitably, others, season ticket money, merchandising are ours.

But time will tell, all the way through this people have said firstly the Huns will be let off, they haven’t. I was at times worried they would be shoehorned into the SPL as a Newco.

I’m an optimist, I think Scottish football can use the mess the Huns have made to progress the game.

  3. Look guys, get it through your heads, if Celtic come out openly opposing hunnite activity, Celtic will be the target of attack from all in the MSM and of course, Unholy Mess FC.

Bear in mind, this is not about Celtic. It is about the integrity of the game in Scotland as a whole.

One club, one club alone, has chosen to totally ignore any and every rule they see as standing in their way. They are junkies who don’t give a single thought about anything other than getting their fix.

We must support every other club to do the right thing, in the best interests of the game as a whole. The exact opposite of the actions of Unholy Mess FC.

The game in Scotland will be the healthiest it has ever been when they are gone. Gone, not Div 1, 2 or 3. Gone.

When they are gone, so too will be gone those who are trying to corrupt the game even further in their desperate, panic driven attempts to save Unholy Mess FC, ironically, even though they don’t support CG.

    Goodbye. Good riddance. Gone.

    We won’t miss you.

Rangers(in administration) will soon be Rangers(in liquidation) but that period could go on for a very long time, therefore TUPE regulations come in before the club is actually liquidated. I could well be wrong, I’m no expert.

  16. I daresay this has already been posted upFrom the telegraph

The bit where a source says ” but what can they do about it?” ie Celtic…….

What can we do realistically ?

1/ We could bhoycott all the away games in the SPL.

2/ We could withdraw from the cup competitions.

3/ Could we have influence on our own regarding the television rights etc ?

4/ Could we do the club membership scheme thing @ £500 per person with

a token amount going towards a season ticket, if the 10 are trying to grab

    our cash ?

5/ Could one of our shareholders ie Denis O’Brien sue the SFA for lack of

oversight and enforcement during the EBT/Dual contracts era. ?

6/ What else can we do that would let the 10 know that we’re smarter and

    stronger than they are ?

I do think there should be league reconstruction a la McLeish etc, however it should be done with no involvement with Dodo FC and if it’s not consensual, ie ourselves and the 10 in unison, then it’s never going to work at any level and will breed an animosity that at present only simmers under the radar. If the 10 want to bring the Scottish Calvinist, ‘We’re aw Jock Tamsons bairns’ factor into play then the whole gig is doomed imho.

‘Sink us and we’ll sink you’ Rangers fans still showing zero humility. My own club Raith Rover were one of the first to speak out in the SFL and I’m proud of that. A news flash for Rangers fans of the ‘you can’t live without us’ persuasion. Raith Rovers left the top league on 1997. We haven’t played Rangers since. We’ve not gone bust. The only team that has gone bust is Rangers FC. Enjoy supporting your Newco with no history and no players down in Division 3. That’s if the SFL votes you in of course.

Agree with your comments and sentiments bhoys – the next 2 years may well reshape the game here in Scotland.

Whilst Celtic have a great opportunity to help and encourage the smaller clubs (without being handcuffed to oldco) – I don’t expect us to get it any easier when we take the field against them. We have the players, finance and most importantly the support to deal with that!

We have a rich history of; democracy, diversity and innovation – we have a knowledgeable board and the commercial contacts that could benefit the league we play in – it’s time for us to take the game forward on and off the park.

For better or worse – our Club are here in Scotland for the foreseeable future – our model should be the benchmark that our opponents aspire to (even as a scaled-down version).

Time for Celtic to take a leading role – their demise (and consignment to the history bin) should be the catalyst for major change and benefit for all clubs.

    MDW,

sorry I dont agree,it is a perfecty legitimate analogy.

bjmac, has been hounding me because my integrity has kept me from buying a season ticket since the old firm joint sponsorship, he has attempted to ridicule my position, simply because I stand by my principals.

He then has a go at my mental health, why, again because I stand by my principals

He like many IMO have been trying to bully other Celtic supporters into buying a season tickets on the back of the changes coming to the scottish game, I challenged him to provide one shred of evidence that the board he done anything, he never even tried, just spent his time trying to be condescening (like being savaged by a seabass) towards my stance, and questioning my allegance.

IMO every other supporter in scotland who refused to buy season tickets from their teams, have acted with more integrity than Celtic suporters who have already bought theirs.

We had the arguments before it all truely kicked off, why should I punish my team, a very disingenious argument IMO anyway, and one designed to ecourage emotional blackmail.

So taking that logic on to the next step, why should the suport of all other clubs punish their own, I’ll tell you why, it has and never will be about punishment it is and always was about the integrity of the game, something I am begining to believe the Celtic support care less and less about.
