SPL threat effectively terminates football in Scotland

1889

Yesterday evening STV revealed the real outcome of last week’s meeting between Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir as a proverbial gun was put to the head of Scottish Football League clubs.

In short, SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, no doubt with the support of some clubs but without the prior knowledge or support of Celtic, has threatened to kick 20 SFL clubs out of the senior game unless they acquiesce to his demand to parachute Sevco into the First Division.

The proposal was presented by SFL chief executive, David Longmuir, and appears to carry his endorsement.

Five scenarios are portrayed:

‘Rangers’ remaining in the SPL is dismissed as SPL clubs have confirmed they will vote no.

‘Rangers’ going to the third division is objected to on two grounds, financial (which is laboured a bit) and – wait for it – “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

Ponder that one for a moment, “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

‘Rangers’ to the First Division is presented as being “financially possible to recover from this scenario”.

‘Rangers’ to SPL2 is dismissed as apparently this would create “a bigger divide” than moving ‘Rangers’ to the First Division but not changing the name of the league.  It is also noted that a legal challenge could bring paralysis.

Finally, they discuss ‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended, which apparently would lead to “complete financial meltdown”.

Then come the inducements to co-opt ‘Rangers’ into the First Division…. cash, your cash.  Lots and lots of your cash, an “immediate cash benefit for all 30 clubs!”  The exclamation mark is theirs!!

We could spend all day dissecting this disgraceful document but I’d like to focus on one immediate element:

‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended – complete financial meltdown.

So how do the SFA, SFL and the SPL rogues who participated in this shambles propose to ensure the SFA Independent Judicial Panel does not suspend ‘Rangers’ for subverting our game for over a decade for fielding illegally registered players for that period?

In short, it cannot.  The independent judicial process will itself need to be subverted.  As I suggested a few days ago, the judges will be told they are no longer wanted, we are back with the hand-selected SFA committee men.

The three most senior executives running our game have told you that one errant club is so powerful it cannot be subject to the rules and must not face the punishments which are due.

I’m not going to dispute the validity of this view (just now), but surely we deserve some honesty? If the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Premier League has accepted the ‘game’ is over, let’s hear from them. Where is the leadership from the SFA president on the collapse of the game under his watch? What are the chief executives saying to their paying customers?

Our sport cannot be subverted below radar.

You have been cheated and the rules will be changed to ensure there are no consequences.  This is no longer a sport, it is a financial accommodation where a few executives are threatening to expel 20 clubs, most of whom have over a century history in the senior game, to allow Sevco to start two divisions higher than they otherwise would.

Celtic can have nothing to do with this.

The game here is dead. The leagues are set to collapse, most likely, no matter what happens now.

  1. Just logged on for a wee lurk. I must say that the Clyde statement is absolutely brilliant. It takes the blackmail communication from the Dark Forces, who govern the game, and returns it to them with a massive GIRUY with an APR that would make Wonga.com look like philanthropists.

From a senior Hampden Park insider…

utter incredulity that the old Rangers FC could even attempt to transfer its share from the old company to the new during a period of insolvency. He was quite adamant that this is simply not possible for the SFA to accept. Clearly the SFA thinks there is some way this can be done but SFA Article 14.1 was quoted carefully and in detail. It does appear unambiguous on this issue.

  6. Well done the Bully Wee! Powerful statement.

It is becoming clear that rank and file supporters of Scottish footbal clubs are turning against the ‘clique’ that is operating within Hampden. Aside from the ‘Newco’ issue, there are real questions to be asked about the way these people have completely trashed any idea of accountability and transparency. It has not been helped by compliant parts of the media who have have been more than happy to act as cheer leaders for this agenda. The pathetic utterances of Sunday Times journalist Douglas Alexander on Off the Ball are a classic example of this.

When I first started reading the statement I thought it was from Celtic, until I saw the reference to Clyde Football Club. That is what you call a statement. And I am pretty sure the writer(s) were not involved in the “document ” released by our glorious leaders. Well done Clyde Fc.

  10. The BBC saying that the SFA will not give ex hun players international clearance (as they don’t really know what they are doing) but FIFA will step in to sort out the mess.

If the SFA would just read the Clyde Board’s incredibly honourable statement, there might just be time for them to pull back from the brink, saving their jobs ………. Well done CLYDE FC……!!!!

I dont think I’ve ever heard scottish radio sound so fair, at last, with no thanks to Celtic, and theres plenty here proud of that fact

I think in the midsts of all this wonderful stuff happening to Scottish football, it does show that Celtic supporters should hold their hands up and acknowledge one thing that they have by and large been wrong about.

For years it has been percieved wisdom amongst Celtic supporters, I would humbly suggest, that most other clubs and the majority of their supporters have a soft spot for rangers when it comes to the ‘big two’ in Scottish football.

The last week or so has blown this out the water. Which is magic.

The Orcs are still waiting on Bomber to come back out to play , but am I the only person thinking that Bomber has likely been lying on a pee-stained bed for the past 3 days with the biggest hangover known to mankind , getting weird flashbacks about getting interviewed on Sky , Talksport and jumping about on the steps of Ibrox shouting “show us the title deeds !! ”

That’ll teach him for going out with Gazza on a school night.

Was at the big school for 3years, after 3 at Duke Street.

The Farmer was legendary, and we all knew about his idiosyncracies, even though a lot of us didn’t attend The Barony.

He used to take a group to Biarritz for a holiday every year and also apparently took his belt with him.

A ,perhaps apocryphal, story was that he gave a boy the belt at Central Station in front of his girlfried for turning up late.

They don’t make teachers like that any more.

Whittaker has done well going straight into the EPL. To a good club and all. Actually used to like him as a player when he was at Hibs, but the longer he played at Ayebroke the more he realised the referees would let him get away with just about any challenge. Expect more to walk away, I mean to follow.

  21. As based in Lenzie and 4 season tickets for Paradise ( renewed now as Sevco will not be in SPL ) , I’ll make a point off going to see Clyde as they are only 10 mins away at broadwood. In fact one of my boys was a season ticket holder after attending one game….need to ask him how that works.

Was in and out of town this morning and on the way in had the pleasure of listening to a fascinating interview with John Reid on Radio 4. I hope he is somewhere in the background advising Celtic as he knows the media/political game inside out. On the way home I had the even greater pleasure of listening to a hurting Douglas Alexander from the Sunday Times.

As a St Mirren ( even more the Chico) he was advocating only Secvo can save Scottish football. He said he was not a Rangers fan ( although he was reminded they do not exist anymore ) , which kinda ties up with the St Mirren statement. For a Sunday Times journalist to show his pain was surprising ; it also leaves me with a decision as to whether I buy the paper or not tomorrow.

Good Luck for the new season Clyde FC

My vote for sports quote of the year.

” Youse arra investurs. Youse ett ra pies.”

  23. Radio Scotland eventually nail it-“there has been no contrition from the club”. Also criticising sevco fans for their attitudes in wishing I’ll on Scottish football.
