Squad game as some will need rest for Champions League

472

Last month Efe Ambrose and Saidy Janko played in what will be some of the biggest games of our season. It didn’t go well. Saidy has since moved out on loan, while Efe is behind Toure, Sviatchenko, Simunovic, O’Connell, Boyata and (maybe) Lustig for a place in central defence.

From that list, Simunovic and Boyata are unlikely to be ready for the Camp Nou, but O’Connell will be no less prepared than John Kennedy was 12 years ago when he deputised for suspended Bobo Balde at the same location. Central defence has gone from being our weakest department to our strongest in a matter of weeks.

My expectation is that Brendan will play Toure, Sviatchenko and Lustig as a back three, with Kieran Tierney and Cristian Gamboa as full backs. That will be a leap of faith for Cristian, who, only five days from Barcelona, has yet to even train with the club. He’ll arrive in Glasgow today after last night’s national team game in Costa Rica.

Despite this schedule, we should look to give Cristian some game time on Saturday, I’d be reluctant to throw him into the Camp Nou cold. This would allow us to rest Mikael Lustig, who played for Sweden on Tuesday, and who will need to be at the top of his game for Barcelona.

Another player who could do with a rest on Saturday is Tom Rogic. Tom has played in Australia and the UAE since we last saw him, eclipsing whatever jetlag Cristian will go through. I’m not sure Brendan will see it the same way, as an offensive midfielder like Tom may be sacrificed for a more defensive player at the Camp Nou. We’ll touch on how to attack later.

I watched Israel-Italy on Monday. Nir Bitton did well against a superior team; it was a good run-through for the Champions League, as he will be asked to play a similar, tactically disciplined, role for Celtic. As the game was Monday, I don’t think he’ll need a rest at the weekend, although we should perhaps consider giving him around 60 minutes.

Football’s a squad game, let’s remember that this week.  It’s been nearly three years since we’ve been to the Camp Nou, these occasions don’t come round often, so we need to prepare properly.

Leave EK at 9am? What, and forget my ParkRun? No sirree, Normal Saturday for a normal game.

Parking will be a big issue tomorrow. Normally I’m down the bottom of Sprignfield Road, obviously a no go. The oterh issue is that me and my Bhoy will be exiting from the safe standing corner whilst the other 2 car occupants are in the James Gang Main Stand. So we’re claiming it’ll be best to park about a mile along London Road past the CSCSSupporters Club whilst they are suggesting Glasgow Green!

Well we certainly will if the foul happens BEHIND Willie Collum….

That’s when you shout “It’s behind you!” and Willie duly gives the penalty.

Jeez, do you not know how refereeing works???

pretty sure the club gave them tickets up a few years back. We might have to rethink that one now Brendan has got us on the right track.

What does parking charges come under then? Extortion’

    ###

It would be extortion if you were forced to park there. But you’re not. You choose to park there.

You choose to park there knowing that the parking is provided for shop customers. It cost the owner money to provide the parking facility. Parking there with no intention of shopping is depriving the owner of his property. So, as I said, morally indistinguishable from shoplifting.

Spot on – as much as it is a squad game now you still put the best possible team on the park and reassess the situation for the next match when it comes around!

I have some sympathy with the supermarkets, etc, who find their car parks used by non-customers. but their chosen method of doing something about it is repugnant.

They effectively cede control of their property to a bunch of gangsters, not very good PR at all.

Easiest way round it is a pay-and-display machine.

50p for first thirty minutes,£5 an hour after that. Up to a max of,say, four hours.

Put your receipt through with your ticket on the way out,the charge is cancelled if you have spent more.

They can have that for free, but they won’t try it.

  9. I always used to park just off Duke St, and walk down. After the game it’s 10 minutes walk vs at least that sitting waiting to get out the car park. Overall it was quicker.

Their method of enforcement is repugnant,as I said. My sympathy for them goes out the window at that point.

My suggestion means that the supermarket won’t lose out,as they will have taken in money from those using the car park, and the user won’t feel hard done by as they have effectively got free parking.

The only losers are the gangster enforcement firms, and Royal Mail who won’t get all those lovely reminders sent. Well, the latter can eff off anaw, forever losing the cards I send back home!

Ernie, I had this exact discussion with my Parish Priest on Monday night believe it or not; he is of the opinion that it is not legally or morally enforceable (or acceptable). The shops do not lose out on custom or business when people park there. There is sufficient space for potential shoppers in the retail park even on match days.

It’s a scam, pure and simple and it is a form of extortion. If it were legally and morally acceptable, legislation or local bye-laws would encourage it.

PeteC, a man of the cloth says that you can park there with moral and spiritual impunity!

  19. Poor Tesco.

Parking companies manage car parks for supermarkets for free, in general. The supermarkets do not get a cut of the fines. They are managed for free because the parking management companies know they can earn loadsadosh from drivers who fear being done.

    So eff them.

    Park and ignore.

You are not breaking any law. Unlike if you go into shop a lift something without paying. That was a really stupid analogy Ernie.
